Best alternatives to Procore Compass for subcontractor prequalification

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

BuildingConnected TradeTapp and Avetta are the strongest documented alternatives to Procore Compass, but they solve different problems. TradeTapp fits bid-linked qualification: a general contractor invites a subcontractor through BuildingConnected, reviews the response alongside bidding activity, and can reuse submitted data with other general contractors. Avetta fits ongoing compliance: it emphasizes document verification, changing regulations, and continuing safety and performance monitoring.

Timing matters. On October 15, 2026, Procore announced that COMPASS by Bespoke Metrics is its preferred subcontractor-prequalification solution. Procore also says its existing Procore Prequalification product will sunset on March 31, 2027. Treat that date as a migration deadline, not as a reason to choose a platform without testing your forms, approval rules, document requirements, and data-portability needs.

Which alternative is best for your workflow?

Option Primary strength Best fit What subcontractors do
BuildingConnected TradeTapp Qualification connected to bid invitations and reusable subcontractor data General contractors already soliciting bids in BuildingConnected Complete and submit a questionnaire in BuildingConnected’s Qualifications tab; responses are free for subcontractors
Avetta Continuous compliance, document verification, regulatory review, and safety-performance visibility Owners, general contractors, and higher-risk programs that must monitor contractors after initial approval Provide the documents and information required by the hiring organization; participation requirements and costs must be confirmed for the specific program
COMPASS by Bespoke Metrics Scored financial, safety, insurance, and operational risk information, summarized in a COMPASS Q Score Organizations that want Procore’s preferred prequalification path and a risk score in the Procore ecosystem Complete the qualification process required by the inviting organization

If your immediate decision is “which one should we pilot?”, choose TradeTapp when qualification is part of bid intake and award decisions. Choose Avetta when the more important question is whether insurance, safety, regulatory, and other compliance evidence stays current throughout the relationship.

What Procore Compass and the existing Procore workflow cover

It helps to separate three products and dates that are easy to conflate. Procore’s own prequalification workflow supports creating, sending, and reviewing qualification forms; approving or denying submissions; customizing questions; operating a secure portal; and connecting qualification data with directories, documents, tasks, reports, and marketplace integrations. COMPASS is a separate preferred solution announced by Procore and supplied by Bespoke Metrics.

How COMPASS evaluates risk

Procore describes COMPASS as evaluating financial, safety, insurance, and operational information. It produces a COMPASS Q Score and recommended outcomes, giving a reviewer a scored risk signal in addition to the underlying records. Procore said the COMPASS network represented 150,000 subcontractors in its 2026 announcement.

The scoring approach is useful when your team wants a consistent risk indicator across many trade partners. It does not remove the need to define project-specific requirements, review exceptions, verify dates, or decide whether a particular subcontractor is acceptable for a particular scope.

What the current Procore integration does—and does not do

Procore’s documented bidding integration is limited to the Enhanced Bid Management experience in the United States and Canada. Users can view COMPASS information and filter bidders by COMPASS data. An active Procore Bid Management subscription and the Enhanced experience are required. If your projects are outside those markets, use a different Procore bidding experience, or do not have that subscription, do not assume the same filtering and visibility are available.

The March 31, 2027 transition

Procore announced on October 15, 2026 that COMPASS by Bespoke Metrics is its preferred subcontractor-prequalification solution and that Procore Prequalification will sunset on March 31, 2027. A company replacing Procore Prequalification should inventory its current process now: question sets, required attachments, approval states, active invitations, expiring certificates, reviewer assignments, and reports. The replacement decision should include a plan for records that are still under review on the sunset date.

BuildingConnected TradeTapp: best for bid-linked prequalification

TradeTapp is the natural fit when the same team that invites subcontractors to bid also needs to qualify them. The questionnaire arrives through BuildingConnected, so qualification is tied to the invitation and the subcontractor’s bidding relationship rather than being an isolated compliance file.

How a subcontractor responds

  1. The general contractor sends a TradeTapp invitation through BuildingConnected.
  2. The subcontractor opens the invitation and goes to the Qualifications tab in BuildingConnected.
  3. The subcontractor completes the questionnaire and supplies the requested information and documents.
  4. Teammates can collaborate while the questionnaire is being prepared.
  5. The subcontractor submits the completed questionnaire.
  6. After one questionnaire is submitted, BuildingConnected says stored qualification data can transfer to other general contractors, reducing repeated data entry when the same trade partner receives additional invitations.

BuildingConnected states that responding to TradeTapp invitations is free for subcontractors. That is a statement about the subcontractor response experience; it does not establish the general contractor’s subscription price, implementation cost, or any other commercial term.

Where TradeTapp earns its place

  • Bid intake: qualification is presented in the same environment used for invitations, so reviewers can connect a bidder’s qualification response to a specific opportunity.
  • Reusable information: a subcontractor can reuse stored qualification data with other general contractors after submitting a questionnaire once.
  • Lower response friction: collaboration in the Qualifications tab helps a subcontractor gather answers from finance, safety, insurance, and operations staff without passing around a static form.
  • Familiarity for BuildingConnected users: teams already using that service do not have to create a separate bid-to-qualification handoff.

TradeTapp questions to resolve before adoption

Product fit depends on the details of your questionnaire and review policy. Ask for a field- and document-level walkthrough, not just a feature list:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Which questionnaire fields and attachments can be reused when a subcontractor receives another invitation?
  • Can your team retain project-specific questions while still reusing the common profile?
  • Who can approve, deny, or place a response on hold, and how are exceptions recorded?
  • How are insurance expirations, corrected submissions, and changed financial information surfaced to reviewers?
  • What can the general contractor export if it changes systems or needs a project archive?
  • What BuildingConnected account, subscription, or invitation configuration is required for your bidding team?

The last question is particularly important for a buyer asking, “Do I need BuildingConnected to use TradeTapp?” The documented subcontractor workflow is delivered through BuildingConnected invitations and its Qualifications tab. Confirm the current general-contractor account and packaging requirements before treating TradeTapp as a standalone qualification portal.

Avetta: best for continuous compliance and safety oversight

Avetta positions its prequalification service around more than collecting a form once. Its materials describe collecting documentation, reviewing changing regulations, verifying contractor compliance status, and providing risk and performance insight at contractor, subcontractor, and worker levels. Its subcontractor-management materials emphasize consistent requirements and visibility into compliance and safety performance.

What Avetta adds after initial approval

  • Document control: the program can require evidence such as insurance and other compliance documents and check whether the records remain acceptable.
  • Regulatory review: requirements can be evaluated against changing rules rather than frozen at the date of the original questionnaire.
  • Safety and performance visibility: the stated scope includes insight at contractor, subcontractor, and worker levels, which is relevant when worker-level checks are part of a site-access or risk policy.
  • Consistent standards: owners and general contractors can apply a common prequalification policy across a larger contractor population.

When Avetta is the better fit

Choose Avetta when a subcontractor’s approval is conditional on evidence that can change during the project or contract: insurance status, safety records, regulatory standing, worker qualifications, or other compliance artifacts. It is especially relevant to higher-risk environments where a one-time questionnaire is not enough to control exposure.

Avetta is less obviously the right first step when your main bottleneck is deciding which bidders may receive an invitation this week. In that situation, a bid-centered workflow may reduce friction more effectively; you can still evaluate whether a compliance service is needed after award.

Avetta questions to resolve before adoption

  • Which countries, states, provinces, and project-specific regulatory requirements are covered?
  • How often are insurance, safety, and other documents rechecked, and what happens when a record expires?
  • Are worker-level checks mandatory, optional, or triggered by particular scopes or sites?
  • Can the service connect with the estimating, bid, project-management, or access-control systems already in use?
  • Which tasks fall to the subcontractor, which fall to your reviewers, and what participation fees or workload apply?
  • How are exceptions, corrective actions, and temporary approvals documented?

The table describes product roles, not a universal ranking. A general contractor can use a bid qualification process for invitation decisions and still need a separate continuous-monitoring process for awarded subcontractors. Decide whether you need one system to do both or a deliberate handoff between systems.

Choose by scenario

You already run bids in BuildingConnected

Start with TradeTapp. Pilot the exact questionnaire used for your most common trade, then verify that the review team can see the information it needs before issuing or awarding a bid. Pay special attention to the reuse rules: reusable data is valuable only if your organization can distinguish a current profile from project-specific answers and expired documents.

You manage high-risk work or strict owner requirements

Start with Avetta if your exposure continues after award and requirements change during the contract. Define the evidence that must be current, the recheck cadence, escalation steps, and the person who can grant a temporary exception. Include worker-level requirements if the site or owner requires them.

You need a scored risk signal inside Procore

Evaluate COMPASS first, because Procore has named it the preferred solution and describes its Q Score as a consolidated risk indicator. Confirm that your region and Procore subscription support the Enhanced Bid Management integration. If they do not, compare the actual workflow your estimators and project managers will use rather than assuming the documented integration applies.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You are a subcontractor answering many qualification requests

TradeTapp may reduce repetitive entry when the invitations you receive come through BuildingConnected, because submitted data can transfer to other general contractors. Keep an internal owner for insurance, safety, financial, and operational updates so a reusable profile does not become stale. For Avetta programs, ask the hiring organization which records must be refreshed and who pays or performs each check.

You need both bid qualification and ongoing compliance

Use a two-stage design: qualify the bidder at invitation or award, then place the awarded subcontractor into continuous compliance monitoring when the project’s risk warrants it. Document which system is authoritative for each record, how an exception moves between systems, and how a project team sees a suspension or expired document before allowing work to continue.

A practical migration plan before March 31, 2027

  1. Inventory the current process. List every Procore Prequalification form, custom question, required attachment, approval state, reviewer role, report, directory field, and open submission. Include trade- and project-specific variations.
  2. Classify each requirement. Mark items as bid intake, financial review, insurance, safety, operational capacity, regulatory compliance, worker verification, or reporting. This shows whether your replacement needs a bid workflow, continuous monitoring, or both.
  3. Map the records. For each field and document, record its owner, expiration rule, acceptable evidence, reviewer, and retention requirement. Ask each candidate how the item is stored, updated, exported, and audited.
  4. Test a representative pilot. Use at least one straightforward subcontractor, one response with missing or expired evidence, and one exception requiring reviewer judgment. Measure the work required from both the subcontractor and your internal team.
  5. Validate integrations and geography. Confirm the bid, estimating, project-management, directory, document, and reporting connections you actually use. Verify country, state, and project-specific requirements; the documented COMPASS bidding integration is currently limited to the United States and Canada.
  6. Set the data and decision policy. Decide who may view sensitive financial and insurance information, who approves exceptions, how corrections are logged, and which system is the source of truth after migration.
  7. Communicate with subcontractors. Explain the new invitation path, required documents, response deadlines, collaboration roles, and how they will correct an answer. Tell them whether any participation cost or additional verification applies.
  8. Run a controlled cutover. Avoid switching every trade on one day. Start with a pilot group, compare decisions and response quality with the old process, resolve gaps, then move the remaining population while preserving an accessible archive of historical decisions.

Implementation checklist for a defensible qualification program

  • Requirements: Separate universal questions from project- or trade-specific questions so a reusable profile does not hide a missing requirement.
  • Evidence: Define acceptable insurance, safety, financial, and operational records, including issue dates, expiration dates, and the person responsible for renewal.
  • Review: Establish approval, denial, hold, and exception states with named authority for each one.
  • Monitoring: Set alerts or review routines for expiring records and changed regulatory or safety information.
  • Privacy: Limit access to sensitive financial and insurance data and document how long records are retained.
  • Portability: Obtain a written description of export formats, included attachments, and what happens to records when a subscription or relationship ends.
  • Subcontractor effort: Count internal hours as well as vendor fees. A free response for subcontractors does not mean the general contractor’s process is free to operate.
  • Auditability: Preserve the questionnaire version, submitted evidence, reviewer, decision, exception reason, and decision date for each qualification.

Cost, ownership, and commercial checks

Do not infer total cost from a subcontractor-facing statement. TradeTapp explicitly says subcontractors can respond to invitations for free, while the materials summarized here do not publish a general-contractor subscription price. Avetta participation terms, verification fees, and workload depend on the program and should be obtained for your jurisdictions and contractor population.

Commercial diligence should cover more than the license. Ask who pays for invitations, document checks, worker-level checks, implementation, data migration, support, and integrations. Ask whether fees recur when a document is rechecked or a subcontractor joins another project. Put export rights, retention, and termination assistance in the contract rather than relying on an informal promise.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom-line selection

For a bid-led general contractor already using BuildingConnected, pilot TradeTapp first and test reuse, exception handling, and exports with real questionnaires. For an owner or general contractor that must keep insurance, safety, regulatory, and worker evidence current, evaluate Avetta as the stronger continuous-compliance option. If remaining inside Procore is strategically important, assess COMPASS against those same requirements and verify the United States/Canada Enhanced Bid Management prerequisites.

Whichever route you choose, use the March 31, 2027 Procore Prequalification sunset as the date by which your forms, records, subcontractor communications, and approval responsibilities must already work in production.
