Reclaimed wood, bamboo and other bio-based products can work in selected applications, while steel, concrete, masonry, aerated concrete and fibre-cement systems can replace wood in specific wall, floor, roof or cladding assemblies.
There is no universal cheapest or lowest-carbon material. The right choice depends on structural capacity, fire and moisture behavior, code acceptance, local supply, transport, labor, durability and the impact of the complete assembly over its service life.

What counts as an alternative to imported lumber?
“Imported lumber” can mean solid-sawn framing brought across a national border, timber shipped from another region, or any product whose origin and supply chain are uncertain. Before substituting it, identify exactly which function the lumber performs:
- Primary structure: studs, joists, rafters, beams, posts, wall plates and diaphragms.
- Sheathing and bracing: plywood, OSB, roof decking, floor decking and shear-wall panels.
- Interior and exterior finishes: trim, cladding, siding, flooring, shelving and cabinetry.
- Thermal and moisture control: framing cavities, rainscreen supports, furring and insulation backing.
An alternative is suitable only when it performs the same required function in the actual assembly. A reclaimed board may be excellent for interior trim but cannot automatically replace a graded structural stud. A steel wall may have adequate strength yet require different thermal-bridge, fastening, fire and moisture details. Compare complete, approved assemblies—not raw material names or commodity prices.

Seven tests for choosing a substitute
Use the following tests before selecting a product or redesigning a house. A material that fails one test may still be usable in another part of the building, but the design must show how the requirement is met.
| Test | Questions to answer | Evidence to request |
|---|---|---|
| Structural capacity | Can the member or panel carry the required loads, spans, lateral forces and connections? | Grade stamps, product tables, engineering calculations, connection schedules and approved drawings. |
| Fire performance | Does the assembly meet the required fire-resistance, flame-spread and protection provisions? | Listed assemblies, tested ratings, protection details and jurisdictional approvals. |
| Moisture and durability | Will the material tolerate construction moisture, rain, condensation, insects and the intended service life? | Installation limits, treatment records, exposure ratings, drainage details and maintenance requirements. |
| Code acceptance | Is the product recognized by the applicable building code, or will an alternative-material approval be needed? | Code evaluation, certification, engineer’s letter and written approval from the building official. |
| Supply and transport | Is there a dependable regional manufacturer, stockist and delivery route? | Supplier origin statement, lead time, minimum order, delivery capacity and backup source. |
| Installation and labor | Can the local crew handle the cutting, lifting, fastening, welding, grouting or protection details? | Installer qualifications, method statements, equipment plan and inspection requirements. |
| Whole-life impact and cost | What are manufacturing, transport, maintenance, replacement and end-of-life effects for the complete assembly? | Itemized quotations, transport distance, environmental product declarations (EPDs) where available and service-life assumptions. |
These tests prevent a common mistake: choosing a material because it is locally available or has a low purchase price while overlooking engineering, labor, delivery or long-term performance.
Regionally produced engineered wood and mass timber
Engineered wood is often the most practical first alternative when imported solid-sawn lumber is the problem. Manufacturers combine smaller wood elements or layers into standardized structural members, making it possible to use regional species and production capacity while retaining a familiar wood-based construction method.

I-joists use a web and flanges to create a manufactured floor or roof member. Their suitability depends on the manufacturer’s permitted spans, bearing conditions, web openings, blocking, rim details and connection requirements. Ask for the current product guide and have the designer coordinate every penetration with the approved details. Do not substitute an I-joist by nominal depth alone; the designation, series, spacing and support condition matter.
Glulam and structural composite lumber
Glulam beams and columns are manufactured from bonded wood laminations. Structural composite lumber (SCL) products use aligned strands, veneers or other engineered wood elements to make beams, headers, columns and studs. They can replace imported solid members where a regional plant can provide the required grades and dimensions. The engineer must verify bending, shear, compression, stability, bearing and connections for the specific product.
Plywood and OSB
Plywood and OSB can replace imported boards in sheathing, diaphragms and shear walls when the panel grade, thickness, exposure rating, nailing schedule and edge support match the design. APA provides design guidance for floors, walls, roofs, diaphragms and shear walls. A panel that looks similar may have a different rating or permitted use, so preserve the product identification and installation instructions on site.
Cross-laminated timber
CLT panels consist of layers of wood arranged in alternating directions. North American CLT is expected to meet ANSI/APA PRG 320, which is recognized in the International Building Code (IBC), International Residential Code (IRC), National Design Specification (NDS) and the Canadian National Building Code (NBC). Recognition does not remove the need to check the edition adopted locally, the panel grade, fire design, moisture protection, lifting sequence, joints and connections.

Singapore’s Building and Construction Authority describes CLT and glulam as mass-engineered-timber products and emphasizes fire safety, moisture protection and connection details. Those are design responsibilities, not optional accessories. Panels must arrive protected, be stored as specified and be incorporated into a complete wall, floor or roof assembly.
When engineered wood is the best fit
- A regional producer can provide certified products in the required sizes and grades.
- The design team already works with wood diaphragms, shear walls and connection systems.
- Fast, dry installation is valuable and the site can handle the required lifting and protection.
- The project wants to reduce reliance on imported solid-sawn members without abandoning wood construction.
Procurement and verification steps
- List every imported member or panel and its structural role.
- Ask regional manufacturers for product grades, available dimensions, certification, lead times and delivery limits.
- Give the engineer the exact product literature before drawings are finalized.
- Recalculate spans, bearing, lateral resistance, fire protection and connections; do not copy the old lumber schedule.
- Confirm storage, weather protection, lifting equipment and installation tolerances with the contractor.
- Keep grade stamps, delivery records and installation instructions in the project file.
Reclaimed and locally sourced wood
Reclaimed wood can reduce demand for newly manufactured material and shorten the distance between source and project, but its appropriate use depends on verification. It is most straightforward for interior finishes, trim, shelving, doors, furniture and other nonstructural work where appearance and dimensions are the principal requirements.
Nonstructural applications
For boards used as finish material, inspect for insect damage, rot, embedded metal, chemical contamination, excessive moisture and dimensional instability. Record the source and treatment history when available. Mill or sort boards only after confirming that the process will not create unsafe dust or remove information needed for identification.
Structural applications
A salvaged beam, joist or board is not automatically equivalent to a new, graded framing member. Structural reclaimed members require inspection, grading, treatment and approval by the project engineer or building official. The review may need species identification, dimensions, defects, previous exposure, fastener holes, notches, fire treatment and laboratory or field evaluation. Until that process is complete, specify reclaimed wood as nonstructural.
Sourcing documentation
USGBC recommends suppliers carrying FSC-certified wood, reclaimed wood and locally or regionally produced materials, with sourcing documentation and independent verification of environmental claims. Ask the supplier to identify the harvest or recovery location, chain of custody where applicable, processing site and any treatment. “Local” should be a documented distance, not a marketing adjective.
Bamboo and other bio-based products
Bamboo can be a useful substitute for selected structural or finish components, but its availability, treatment, connection design, fire performance and code recognition vary substantially by product and jurisdiction. Specify only a product with project-specific engineering data, installation instructions and a clear approval path.
California’s 2025 green-building code lists bamboo, straw, natural fibers and other bio-based products as potential material choices. It separately identifies certified wood schemes including FSC, SFI, PEFC, ATFS and CSA Z809. These references establish categories and documentation approaches; they do not make every bamboo or bio-based product acceptable for every structural use.

Where bio-based materials commonly fit
- Structural bamboo: possible only when the engineered product, treatment, connections and code pathway are documented.
- Straw and agricultural fibers: often considered for wall infill, insulation or panels rather than conventional primary framing.
- Hemp, cork and wool: more commonly used as insulation or finish materials than as primary structural framing.
- Natural-fiber composites: evaluate resin content, moisture behavior, fire performance and repair or replacement procedures.
Do not infer structural capacity from a material’s renewable origin. The engineer still needs dependable properties, connection details, inspection procedures and a method for protecting the product during construction.
Steel, concrete, masonry and fibre-cement systems
Non-wood systems can replace lumber in particular assemblies, but they change the building’s detailing and labor profile. A steel-stud wall, reinforced-concrete frame, concrete-masonry wall, aerated-concrete system or fibre-cement panel should be evaluated as a complete assembly with its insulation, membranes, fasteners, finishes and foundations.
Steel framing
Steel studs and joists can serve as light-frame alternatives where suppliers, roll-forming capacity and trained installers are available. Design must address thermal bridging, corrosion protection, screw or weld connections, fire protection, acoustic paths and the way services pass through the framing. A steel substitution is not a one-for-one change in stud size or spacing.
Concrete and reinforced concrete
Concrete can provide foundations, walls, floors, roofs or frames that do not rely on imported lumber. Its performance depends on mix design, reinforcement, formwork, curing, moisture control and local labor. Compare the complete structural and envelope design, including insulation and thermal-bridge treatment, rather than comparing the price of concrete with the price of boards.
Concrete masonry and aerated concrete
Concrete masonry units and aerated-concrete blocks can form load-bearing or infill walls when the local code, reinforcement details, lintels, anchors and moisture protection are resolved. Their weight affects foundations, handling and construction sequencing. Aerated products also require product-specific fastening and finish details.
Fibre-cement
Fibre-cement products are commonly used for cladding, soffits, boards and selected panel systems. They may replace wood siding or sheathing in an assembly, but they are not automatically a substitute for structural framing. Confirm the panel’s structural rating, fasteners, joint treatment, water-resistive barrier and fire details.
Why assembly comparisons matter
New Zealand Building Performance guidance lists concrete, stone composites, fibre-cement, steel, plasterboard and recycled materials among available construction products. It also warns that a material with higher manufacturing emissions may perform better over the home’s life through durability or operational-energy savings. The relevant comparison therefore includes insulation, air and water control, maintenance, expected replacement, transport and end-of-life—not just the raw material’s manufacturing figure.

Cost, carbon and supply: what can and cannot be ranked
No authoritative cross-material statistic establishes one universal cheapest, lowest-carbon or most available alternative for every house. Results change with project location, design, transport distance, manufacturing method, durability, labor, maintenance and end-of-life.
Build a local cost comparison
- Request itemized quotations for material, fabrication, delivery, unloading, storage, waste and returnable packaging.
- Add design and engineering fees caused by a change in structural system.
- Price the labor and equipment required for cutting, lifting, welding, grouting, fastening, fire protection and weather protection.
- Include foundation changes, insulation, membranes, cladding, finishes and service penetrations.
- Separate one-time costs from recurring maintenance, replacement and inspection costs.
- Record the quote date, currency, region, tax treatment and validity period.
Measure transport and environmental impact
Ask each supplier for the manufacturing location, shipping route and available EPD. Record transport distance separately from the material’s manufacturing data. A nearby product is not automatically lower impact if it requires energy-intensive processing or frequent replacement, while a product shipped farther may have durability or performance advantages. State the assumptions so another designer can reproduce the comparison.

California’s regional-material criterion
For projects governed by California’s 2025 green-building code, the regional-material criterion identifies material harvested or manufactured in California or within 500 miles of the project site. Treat that as a code-specific definition, not a universal standard for every jurisdiction or an automatic environmental ranking.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Code approval and documentation
Every substitution needs a documented path from product selection to inspection. The exact requirements depend on the jurisdiction, occupancy, building height, structural system and code edition adopted for the project.
Alternative-material approval
New York City’s code provides a clear example: “The use of alternative material, design, method of construction or equipment shall be approved where the commissioner finds that the proposed design is satisfactory and complies with the intent of the provisions of this code.” Other jurisdictions may use different wording or procedures, so obtain the local building department’s requirements before ordering materials.
Approval checklist
- Applicable code edition and adopted amendments.
- Structural calculations for gravity, wind, seismic, lateral and connection forces.
- Fire-resistance and protection details for the complete assembly.
- Moisture, drainage, vapor-control and construction-weather plan.
- Product certification, evaluation reports, grade stamps and installation manuals.
- Environmental documentation, including EPDs where available.
- Written supplier origin, chain-of-custody or recovery documentation.
- Engineer-of-record sign-off and written building-official approval where required.
- Inspection, testing, nonconformance and repair procedures.
A practical substitution workflow
- Map the existing specification. Mark every imported item, its structural role, dimensions, grade, fire exposure and moisture exposure.
- Set the project priorities. Decide whether the primary driver is local availability, shorter transport, reduced embodied impact, speed, durability, fire performance or budget.
- Develop at least two technically viable assemblies. Include one regionally manufactured engineered-wood option when available, then compare an appropriate non-wood or bio-based option for the same role.
- Verify supply before redesign. Confirm that the manufacturer can deliver the required quantities, grades, dimensions and replacement pieces within the construction schedule.
- Have the designer recalculate. Recheck loads, spans, bearing, connections, diaphragms, shear walls, fire, moisture, thermal bridges and foundations.
- Submit the approval package. Include drawings, calculations, product data, certifications, EPDs where available, origin records and installation details.
- Plan site execution. Train installers, arrange lifting or specialized tools, protect products from weather and define inspection hold points.
- Control substitutions during construction. Require written approval for any change in manufacturer, grade, thickness, treatment, fastener or connection.
- Close out the record. Retain as-built drawings, product labels, delivery records, inspection reports, maintenance instructions and approval letters.

Common failure modes and how to avoid them
Treating “local” as proof of suitability
A nearby product may lack the required grade, quantity, certification or delivery reliability. Obtain written origin and product documentation, then have the engineer verify the actual specification.

Changing materials after the drawings are complete
A different material changes connections, dimensions, fire protection, insulation, membranes and sometimes foundations. Submit the redesign before procurement, not after material arrives on site.
Comparing only purchase prices
Include engineering, labor, equipment, transport, waste, protection, finishing and maintenance. A cheaper board can produce a more expensive wall if it requires unfamiliar labor or additional layers.
Ignoring moisture during construction
Mass timber, engineered wood, bamboo and bio-based products need a storage and weather-protection plan. Steel, concrete, masonry and fibre-cement assemblies also require drainage, corrosion or curing controls appropriate to the product.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesAssuming certification replaces design
ANSI/APA PRG 320 recognition, a wood certification label or an environmental declaration supports verification but does not select the right member, connection or assembly for a particular house. The project documents must still show compliance.
How to specify a lower-risk alternative
Write the specification around measurable performance and traceable supply. Identify the product standard, grade, dimensions, permitted uses, exposure limits, fasteners, connection hardware, fire and moisture protection, inspection requirements and acceptable substitutions. Name the manufacturing or recovery location and require advance notice of any change.
For a regional engineered-wood package, request current product guides, certification, delivery schedule, panel or member identification and a backup source. For reclaimed wood, require recovery records, inspection and grading. For bamboo or another bio-based product, require treatment, engineering properties, fire data, connection details and code approval. For steel, concrete, masonry or fibre-cement, coordinate the structural, thermal, water, fire and finish layers as one assembly.
The most defensible strategy is therefore selective rather than ideological: use regionally manufactured engineered wood or mass timber where it is certified and available, reclaimed or bio-based products where their properties and approvals fit, and steel, concrete, masonry or fibre-cement where those systems provide a better documented solution for the specific component. A licensed designer and the local building official should approve the final substitution before construction.
