Filterless air purifiers can avoid disposable cartridges, but they still need cleaning—and “filterless” does not guarantee strong particle removal, odor control, or safe ozone emissions. The most practical options use reusable electrostatic collection plates; compare their measured clean-air delivery rate (CADR), cleaning routine, and ozone evidence before buying.

Those are manufacturer coverage claims; comparable independently verified CADR figures are not stated on the cited collection page. Promotions change prices. Airdog flagship collection. | Buyers willing to consider a premium reusable-collector system, provided they confirm model-specific cleaning, ozone testing, and CADR. |
| Honeywell AirGenius 3 HFD300 | Washable permanent ifD particle filter and washable foam pre-filter; optional odor pre-filter is consumable. | AHAM-verified for a 225-square-foot room and up to 4.8 air changes per hour; five-year limited warranty. Honeywell’s page has shown promotional pricing, which can change. Honeywell product listing. | Someone who means “no routine main-filter replacement,” not literally no filter. |
These are not equivalent products: the first three use electronic collection systems; the Honeywell has a physical washable filter. The available evidence does not establish a single overall winner across particle removal, ozone emissions, and odor treatment. Check the exact model’s current documentation rather than treating a manufacturer’s square-footage claim as a performance rating.

What “filterless” means
In most listings, “filterless” means no disposable primary filter cartridge. The machine still has a way to catch, charge, or treat pollutants, and often has components that must be washed. A washable filter is reusable, but it is still a filter. An optional carbon or odor pad may still need replacement.

| Type | Disposable filter? | What maintenance or trade-off to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Electrostatic collector | Usually no disposable main filter | Charged particles collect on plates that must be cleaned; ozone output depends on design. |
| Permanent washable filter | No routine replacement of the main filter | Wash the filter as directed; optional odor media may be disposable. |
| Ionizer | Usually no | Particles may settle on room surfaces instead of being captured inside the unit; ozone and effectiveness vary. |
| UV-only cleaner | Often no particle filter | UV treatment does not, by itself, remove dust or pollen from the air; lamp maintenance and ozone considerations depend on design. |
| HEPA with carbon | Yes | Replace the cartridge, but this combines mechanical particle capture with gas-phase media when the carbon stage is substantial. |
Electrostatic precipitators charge airborne particles and draw them to oppositely charged collection plates. EPA describes particle removal and plate cleaning as central features of this technology, while warning that ozone emissions vary. EPA’s residential air-cleaner technical summary.

Ionizers instead charge particles that can settle on walls, floors, furniture, or other surfaces. EPA notes that some ionizers may be less effective than high-efficiency particle filters or electrostatic precipitators and may generate ozone. Charging or inactivating a pollutant is not necessarily the same as removing it from the breathing zone.
How to tell whether a model can clean your room
Start with CADR, not the largest room-size number on a box. CADR measures how much particle-cleaned air a portable cleaner delivers; the smoke rating is particularly relevant to fine particles. Prefer AHAM-verified or otherwise independently measured figures with clear test conditions. A square-footage claim without a stated air-change target is difficult to compare.
EPA’s room-size guidance uses approximately 65 cfm for 100 square feet, 130 cfm for 200 square feet, and 325 cfm for 500 square feet with an 8-foot ceiling. These examples are a useful screening guide, not a substitute for matching a unit’s measured CADR to the desired cleaning rate. EPA guide to air cleaners in the home.

That comparison matters for the AirSoap X3: its listed CADR is 120 cfm, while its manufacturer also advertises coverage up to 860 square feet. Those figures describe different things; do not interpret the large coverage claim as proof that the unit will deliver a particular air-change rate throughout a large room. For AirSoap X5 and Airdog models, obtain a model-specific comparable CADR before relying on the advertised area.
- Use the room’s actual floor area and ceiling height; open layouts and adjoining spaces can increase the volume the purifier must serve.
- Check the CADR at the operating speed you can tolerate. A high-speed rating is less useful if noise means the machine will usually run on low.
- Leave room around the intake and outlet, and keep the unit where air can circulate rather than tucked behind furniture.
- For a large or open room, consider multiple units or a larger model with substantiated CADR rather than assuming one coverage number applies to every layout.
What each shortlisted model does—and does not—establish
PhoneSoap AirSoap X3: strongest fit when avoiding cartridges is the priority
PhoneSoap describes the X3 as using washable collection plates and a pre-filter rather than a disposable HEPA cartridge. The company’s page reports 120 cfm CADR and up to 860 square feet of coverage, along with low/high noise and maximum-power figures shown in the comparison table. It recommends cleaning the plates about every three months. Treat those as manufacturer-published specifications and directions; the cited information does not establish independent performance across real rooms or ozone results. PhoneSoap AirSoap X3.
PhoneSoap also makes a 14.6-nanometer particle-capture claim. A particle-size claim alone is not equivalent to a HEPA efficiency rating or a whole-room CADR test: it does not tell a buyer the airflow, test setup, loading condition, or room-level removal rate. The X3 is therefore a plausible choice for avoiding a disposable main filter, not an automatic choice for the strongest verified particle performance.

PhoneSoap AirSoap X5: ask for the comparable performance figure
The X5 is the larger AirSoap option, with PhoneSoap advertising up to 1,600 square feet. The cited collection page does not state a comparable CADR, so that area claim cannot establish how quickly it will clean a particular room. Ask the seller for model-specific CADR and ozone documentation before paying a premium for the larger coverage number. PhoneSoap AirSoap collection.
Airdog X3, X5, and X8: premium reusable-collector alternatives
Airdog’s official collection lists X3, X5, and X8 models with advertised room coverage from about 860 to 4,000 square feet. Coverage and promotional prices vary by model and offer; the cited collection page does not provide a comparable independently verified CADR for this comparison. Confirm the exact model’s collector-cleaning schedule, ozone test evidence, warranty, and replacement-part availability before buying. Airdog flagship collection.
Honeywell AirGenius 3: washable-filter alternative, not filter-free
The AirGenius 3 is the clearer fit for a shopper who wants to avoid routinely buying a replacement main filter. Honeywell specifies a permanent washable ifD particle filter and washable foam pre-filter; the optional odor-reducing pre-filter is replaced periodically. Honeywell’s listing says the unit is AHAM-verified for 225 square feet, with up to 4.8 air changes per hour, and lists a five-year limited warranty. Its manual directs owners to clean the permanent filter every three months. Product details and Honeywell AirGenius manual.
AirRepair: a niche option that needs more comparable evidence
AirRepair describes a washable electrostatic collector alongside carbon and pre-filter stages, and reports an ozone result of 12.6 ppb under UL 867 testing. That is a company-reported result, not a substitute for reviewing the complete test report and conditions. The cited product information does not establish comparable CADR, current price, warranty details, or the breadth of independent testing. AirRepair product information.
Where filterless systems make sense—and where they do not
Dust, pollen, and pet dander
A collector can help if it has sufficient measured particle delivery for the room and is kept clean. Airborne particles are only part of the problem: allergens already on bedding, carpet, upholstery, or floors remain there until you clean those surfaces. Run a suitable unit consistently, vacuum and launder as appropriate, and clean its collector before buildup compromises airflow or capture.

Wildfire smoke
Particle capture may reduce airborne smoke particles, but do not assume every electronic cleaner is suitable for smoke. Look for a measured smoke CADR, check ozone documentation, and confirm performance at a speed you can run continuously. Smoke odor and gases are separate: a particle collector without a substantial gas-phase stage may not remove them. For heavy smoke, a conventional HEPA unit with appropriately sized carbon may be a better-supported choice if its measured performance is stronger.

Odors and volatile organic compounds
Dust, pollen, dander, and smoke particles are not the same as gases. Odor and VOC removal generally require an appropriate gas-phase medium, such as a substantial activated-carbon bed or another validated sorbent. A thin or optional odor pad may have limited capacity, and carbon eventually saturates. For cooking fumes, improve source capture and ventilation; for solvents or formaldehyde, do not assume a general-purpose filterless particle purifier will solve the exposure.
Mold and moisture
An air cleaner may reduce some airborne mold particles, but it does not repair a leak, dry a damp building, or remove established growth. Address the moisture source and remediation. EPA treats air cleaning as supplementary to source control and other indoor-air measures. EPA home air-cleaner guidance.
Microorganisms and settled pollutants
Capture, inactivation, and removal are distinct claims. UV-C requires suitable intensity and contact time to inactivate particular microorganisms; a UV lamp does not necessarily remove particles. Ask what organism was tested, under what conditions, and whether the reported result concerns inactivation or room-level removal. No air purifier substitutes for cleaning settled dust, appropriate ventilation, or other protections.

Some electrostatic precipitators, ionizers, plasma devices, and inadequately coated UV systems may emit ozone. Ozone is a lung irritant, so avoid products designed to generate it for occupied residential rooms, especially where people have asthma or respiratory sensitivity. EPA says no federal agency has approved ozone generators for use in occupied spaces. EPA guidance on ozone generators sold as air cleaners.
- Look for model-specific ozone test results, not just a broad “safe” or “zero ozone” phrase. UL 2998 validation may be relevant to bipolar ionization claims; confirm the exact model and documentation.
- Check CARB certification where applicable, but do not treat one certification or a general technology label as a complete assessment of room performance.
- Use the manual’s washing and drying instructions. Do not reinstall wet plates or filters, and do not assume a collector is dishwasher-safe unless the manufacturer says so.
- Keep the unit away from water and place it where children cannot reach electrical or removable parts.
- Do not rely on “EPA approved” or an EPA establishment number as an endorsement. EPA says it does not certify or recommend particular air-cleaner brands or models; an establishment number is not proof of safety or effectiveness. EPA explanation of air-cleaner certification.
Maintenance is the price of skipping disposable cartridges
Reusable collectors exchange cartridge shopping and disposal for hands-on cleaning. Depending on the model, owners may need to wash plates, charging wires or emitter assemblies, washable pre-filters, grilles, fan intakes, sensors, and dust-catching interior surfaces. AirSoap recommends plate cleaning about every three months; Honeywell’s AirGenius manual gives a three-month interval for its washable ifD filter. Follow the specific manual rather than generalizing either schedule to other machines.
Before purchase, find out how much disassembly cleaning requires, whether parts must dry completely before use, whether emitters are delicate, and whether replacement plates or power supplies are sold. A neglected collector can accumulate dust, smell, reduce airflow, trigger a fault indicator, or underperform. If a unit becomes unusually noisy or shows electrical symptoms, stop using it and consult its manual or the manufacturer rather than continuing to operate it.

Compare total ownership cost, not just filter cost
A no-replacement-filter model is not automatically cheaper. Include its purchase price, electricity, optional pre-filters or carbon, cleaning supplies and time, replacement parts, and the possibility of needing another unit for a second room. Compare that with a conventional purifier’s cartridge price and replacement interval. Prices and promotions change, so use current product listings rather than old sale figures.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsUse this calculation for the same ownership period and room:
Total ownership cost = purchase price + replacement pre-filters or carbon + electricity + expected maintenance parts + cleaning costs.
For a fair comparison, use each model’s published power draw at the speed you expect to run and your local electricity rate. Do not assume reusable plates will last indefinitely or that an optional carbon stage is free to maintain.
How to choose by what is in the air
- Dust, pollen, or pet dander: Prioritize measured CADR for the room, continuous operation, and a collector you will actually keep clean.
- Fine smoke particles: Seek a measured smoke CADR and clear ozone evidence; consider HEPA plus substantial carbon when smoke gases and odor also matter.
- Cooking odors or VOCs: Favor source capture, ventilation, and a purifier with a meaningful gas-phase media specification—not a particle-only “filterless” claim.
- Mold: Fix moisture and remediate growth; an air cleaner is supplementary.
- Microbial concerns: Distinguish tested capture from tested inactivation and do not infer disease prevention from a general claim.
- Carbon monoxide: A room air purifier is not a substitute for carbon-monoxide alarms, source control, and proper appliance venting.
Buyer checklist before ordering
- Define “no filter.” Decide whether you mean no disposable primary cartridge or no replaceable consumables at all; many models still have washable filters or optional odor media.
- Find the model-specific CADR. Prefer AHAM verification or independently measured CADR, ideally including smoke CADR when fine particles are the concern.
- Read the ozone evidence. Identify test method, exact model, result, and any relevant certification; avoid intentional ozone-generating modes.
- Read the cleaning instructions. Check frequency, disassembly, drying time, and whether cleaning is practical for your household.
- Check gas removal separately. Verify the amount and type of carbon or other sorbent if odor or VOC treatment is a priority.
- Confirm support. Review warranty terms, return policy, and availability of collector plates, emitters, power supplies, and consumables.
- Calculate total cost. Compare realistic energy use, cleaning effort, consumables, and replacement parts over the same period.
Who should choose a filterless purifier?
Choose a reusable-collector system if avoiding disposable main cartridges is a genuine priority, you will do the cleaning, and the exact model has credible particle-delivery and ozone evidence for your room. Consider the AirSoap X3 only with its listed 120-cfm CADR in mind; investigate comparable CADR before relying on X5 or Airdog coverage claims. Choose the Honeywell AirGenius 3 if a washable primary filter meets your needs, while recognizing that it is not strictly filter-free and its optional odor pre-filter is consumable.
If your main need is well-established particle filtration, wildfire-smoke performance, or substantial odor/VOC treatment, compare against a conventional HEPA-plus-carbon purifier with measured CADR and appropriately sized carbon. EPA recommends using filtration alongside source control and ventilation, not as a complete solution on its own. EPA air-cleaner guidance.
