The best treatment is a layered, variable system: broadband wall and ceiling absorbers for speech clarity, dedicated low-frequency treatment for amplified music, and movable curtains, banners or rotatable panels to change the room between events. A single layer of decorative panels cannot make one large hall work equally well for conferences, exhibitions, amplified concerts and unamplified performances.
Why a multipurpose hall needs variable acoustics
Every event does not need the same reverberation. Spoken announcements, lectures and conferences need a controlled decay so consonants remain distinct. Amplified music usually needs enough absorption to prevent the sound system from exciting a long, muddy reverberation. Unamplified orchestral, choral and acoustic performances generally benefit from a more reflective and lively response.
The International Telecommunication Union’s venue-acoustics guidance explains that longer reverberation times are generally required for acoustic music and advises venues that host both amplified and unamplified events to explore variable acoustics, including retractable curtains or rotatable panels that can present either an absorbing or reflecting surface. That is why a hall should be designed around operating states rather than one permanent acoustic setting.

There is no universal reverberation-time number for every large event hall. The appropriate target depends on volume, geometry, audience and seating absorption, event type, stage arrangement and sound reinforcement. Set separate targets for each important use and verify them in representative layouts instead of selecting products from a catalogue first.
What the treatment must accomplish
Control mid and high frequencies
Speech intelligibility is damaged by strong early reflections, flutter echoes and a long mid/high-frequency decay. Mineral-wool or fiberglass panels, heavy drapes and other soft furnishings absorb much of this range. Fiberglass acoustic panels can have absorption coefficients approaching 1 when tested in suitable configurations, but the published result belongs to a particular product thickness, air gap, mounting method and test frequency. Do not transfer a laboratory value to an untested installation.

Manage bass separately
Low-frequency energy has long wavelengths and is harder to absorb. Thin decorative panels that improve a hand-clap echo may leave bass buildup, uneven low notes and a powerful, slow decay. Thick porous absorbers, membrane or Helmholtz resonators, and variable bass systems are used when the room and sound-system design require more low-frequency control.
Prevent reflections from large hard surfaces
Parallel concrete, masonry, glass or metal surfaces can create flutter echoes. Treating only a small area near the stage leaves the rest of the room reflective. Sport New Zealand guidance generally recommends materials with a Noise Reduction Coefficient (NRC) of 0.7 or higher where acoustic treatment is required. NRC is a useful screening value, not a substitute for octave-band data and room modeling.

Absorption removes sound energy inside the hall; it does not stop sound passing through a wall, door, roof, ceiling void or HVAC system. If adjacent rooms must operate at the same time, the project also needs rated operable partitions, sealed doors, adequate wall and roof constructions, and carefully treated ventilation paths.
Best treatment options for a large event hall
| Option | Main frequency range | Fixed or adjustable | Best use | Important limitations |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mineral-wool or fiberglass wall panels | Primarily mid and high frequencies; thicker assemblies can extend lower | Usually fixed | Speech, presentations, general event control and reflection reduction | Requires sufficient coverage, safe mounting, impact and fire ratings, and octave-band test data |
| Ceiling clouds, baffles and suspended absorbers | Primarily mid and high frequencies | Fixed or reconfigurable | Halls with glazing, scenery, circulation or limited wall area | Rigging, sprinkler, lighting and maintenance coordination are essential; count equivalent absorption area rather than pieces |
| Retractable curtains and roller banners | Mostly mid and high frequencies | Adjustable | Speech, conferences, amplified events and acoustic separation; opened for a livelier music setting | Performance changes with fullness, folds, distance from the wall and deployment; not a bass solution |
| Thick porous, membrane or Helmholtz treatment | Low frequencies, depending on design | Fixed or variable | Bass buildup from amplified music and uneven low-frequency decay | Needs engineering design, space, tuning and verification; thin panels alone are insufficient |
| Variable low-frequency systems | Specialist systems can cover a broad low-frequency range; one documented inflatable-membrane approach is 63–1000 Hz | Adjustable | Changing a hall between classical, unplugged and electronic music conditions | Requires controls, structural review, fire compliance and specialist installation |
| Rated operable partitions and sealed doors | Sound transmission across boundaries, not room reverberation | Adjustable room division | Divisible halls and simultaneous events in adjacent spaces | Must be designed as an isolation assembly; internal absorption alone cannot replace it |
Broadband wall and ceiling panels
Broadband panels are the foundation of most large-hall schemes. Mineral-wool and fiberglass products absorb reflected energy over the mid and high bands and can be distributed to reduce the strongest reflection paths. In a speech layout, that usually means controlling side-wall and ceiling reflections that return to the audience after the direct sound. In an amplified layout, the same treatment reduces the workload on the sound system and limits cumulative reverberation.
How to specify panels
- Request absorption coefficients by octave band, not only a single NRC or marketing rating.
- Record panel thickness, density, edge treatment, air gap and mounting orientation; each changes performance.
- Specify fire classification for the complete facing, core, frame and attachment system, not just the insulation core.
- Use impact-resistant coverings in sports, exhibition and high-traffic areas.
- Confirm resistance to dust, moisture and cleaning methods appropriate to the hall’s maintenance plan.
- Coordinate panel dimensions and locations with doors, sightlines, banners, lighting, sprinklers, rigging and stage scenery.
Large volume means large required absorption area. A few attractive panels behind the stage can improve a local reflection while leaving most of the hall’s acoustic energy untouched. The quantity and distribution should come from an octave-band room model that includes the audience and seats.

Ceiling clouds, baffles and suspended absorbers
Suspended treatment is valuable when walls are glazed, occupied by circulation, needed for projection, or reserved for scenery and exhibition displays. Clouds and baffles increase effective absorbing area above the audience and can interrupt long ceiling reflection paths.
Suspended elements are not interchangeable by count. A large horizontal cloud, a narrow vertical baffle and an island with a perimeter air gap expose different areas to sound. Compare their equivalent absorption area in the room model, including spacing and edge exposure. Check the supporting structure and secondary safety restraints, and keep the system clear of sprinklers, smoke-control equipment, luminaires, loudspeakers and movable rigging.
Retractable curtains, roller banners and rotatable panels
Movable absorption lets staff select an acoustic condition instead of accepting the compromise of a permanently dead or permanently live room. Deploy curtains or roller banners for speeches, conferences and heavily amplified events. Retract them when an acoustic performance needs more reflection and reverberant support. Curtains can also divide a hall acoustically around a smaller audience, reducing the volume that the sound system has to excite.
Specify the operating position, not merely the fabric. Fullness, folds, distance from the hard wall, overlap at seams and the height of the deployed curtain affect absorption. A motorized system needs accessible controls, position indicators, inspection points and a safe manual recovery method. If rotatable panels are used, define the reflective and absorptive faces and provide secure locking in both positions.
Documented auditorium and event-hall systems include retractable sound curtains and roller banners intended to vary reverberation and provide acoustic separation. Treat such products as components of a modeled system: their laboratory data must match the installed area and deployment state.

Low-frequency treatment for amplified music
Bass problems often remain after a hall receives a conventional wall-panel package. Symptoms include notes that linger at particular seats, a powerful stage or corner response, and a sound-system mix that changes dramatically when the audience moves. These effects arise from room modes, boundary interaction and subwoofer placement as well as from reverberation.
Fixed low-frequency approaches
Use thicker porous absorbers where space allows, or engineered membrane and Helmholtz resonators tuned to the room’s modal problems. Their dimensions, cavity depth, perforation or membrane properties and placement determine the useful band. A generic “bass trap” label is not enough; request measured or calculated performance at the frequencies that the room and system actually excite.

Variable low-frequency approaches
Specialist variable systems can alter bass absorption between event types. One documented inflatable-membrane approach, aQflex/aQtube, is designed to vary absorption from 63 to 1000 Hz so a hall can be adjusted for classical, unplugged or electronic music. Such a system is an engineered installation requiring control integration, structural review, fire compliance and commissioning. It should not be treated as a plug-in substitute for room design.
Coordinate treatment with the sound system
Subwoofer locations, crossover settings, delay, equalization and directional control can either worsen or reduce modal problems. Model the acoustic treatment and loudspeaker arrangement together, then verify the result with the system operating in the intended deployment.

How to place treatment in a large, irregular hall
Start with reflection paths
Map direct sound from the stage and loudspeakers to the audience, then identify strong first reflections from side walls, rear walls, balconies, ceiling structures and the stage shell. Treating those paths usually produces a clearer improvement than distributing identical panels randomly.
Break up parallel hard planes
Do not leave opposing long walls untreated. Alternate absorption, diffusion or angled surfaces where appropriate, while preserving enough controlled reflection for unamplified music. Diffusion is not a replacement for absorption when the room has excessive decay; it redistributes energy rather than removing it.
Treat the rear and upper surfaces
A hard rear wall can send a strong delayed reflection back toward the stage and audience. Upper rear-wall absorption, a deployed curtain or a properly designed scattering surface can reduce that return. Ceiling clouds are especially useful where the roof is high and reflective.

Include audience and seating states
People and upholstered seats absorb sound, while empty retractable seating, temporary exhibition floors and standing crowds absorb differently. Model empty, partial and full occupancy where those conditions are operationally important. A hall that sounds acceptable at a full concert may become excessively live during a sparsely attended conference.

Measure and model before buying
Begin with a survey of the hall volume, geometry, finishes, seating layouts, occupancy states, event types, HVAC noise and sound-system locations. Photograph and document reflective surfaces, doors, balconies, stage elements and any existing treatment. The survey should include the condition in which the hall is normally operated, not just an empty shell.
ISO 3382-2 provides methods for measuring reverberation time. Use an appropriate measurement procedure and record the results by frequency and measurement position. Background noise should be measured separately because a quiet room and a noisy ventilation system can have the same reverberation time but very different speech performance.
Large or irregular halls need specialist acoustic modeling. NEN-EN 12354-6 is not intended for very large spaces such as concert halls and theatres, so do not present it as a complete prediction method for a major event venue. Select a modeling and measurement approach suited to the hall’s scale and geometry.
Commissioning workflow
- Define operating states. List speech, conference, amplified music, unamplified music, exhibition and divided-hall layouts. Record seating, curtains, banners, stage shells and sound-system positions for each.
- Measure the existing room. Capture reverberation time by octave band, background noise and any obvious flutter echoes or low-frequency hot spots using an appropriate standard method.
- Set separate targets. Establish performance criteria for speech clarity, amplified music control and unamplified music support. Avoid one generic reverberation target.
- Model fixed and variable treatment. Include wall panels, clouds, baffles, curtains, audience, seats, stage elements and low-frequency devices in every deployment state.
- Coordinate construction details. Resolve fire, impact, structural, rigging, HVAC, lighting, projection and maintenance requirements before fabrication.
- Install a balanced system. Combine broadband absorption with appropriately designed low-frequency treatment, then provide movable elements to switch the room’s response.
- Commission in representative layouts. Repeat reverberation-time measurements, check speech intelligibility, measure background noise and test sound-system coverage with the hall empty and occupied where practical.
- Train operators. Provide simple event presets, deployment diagrams, inspection intervals and recovery procedures so the intended acoustic state is actually used.
Practical event presets
| Event | Typical treatment state | Operational priority |
|---|---|---|
| Speech, lecture or conference | Deploy curtains or banners; use broadband wall and ceiling absorption; select controlled low-frequency settings | Clear consonants, low background noise and even loudspeaker coverage |
| Amplified band or electronic music | Keep broadband control active; deploy appropriate curtains; engage variable or fixed bass absorption; optimize subwoofer locations | Prevent bass buildup and excessive decay without making the room unnaturally dry |
| Unamplified orchestra, choir or acoustic performance | Retract some curtains or banners and use the reflective side of variable panels where designed; retain enough control to avoid harsh echoes | Useful reverberant support, clarity and even distribution across the audience |
| Exhibition or divided hall | Use curtains and rated operable partitions to define zones; keep treatment clear of displays and circulation | Reduce spill between activities and maintain safe, flexible access |
Troubleshooting common acoustic failures
The hall still echoes after panels are installed
Check total treated area, not just panel count. Confirm that panels are located on the dominant reflection paths, that the installed air gap matches the tested assembly, and that untreated parallel walls, roof decks or rear surfaces are not dominating the decay. Re-measure by octave band in the actual seating state.

Speech is clear near the stage but poor at the rear
Investigate delayed reflections from the rear wall, balcony fronts and ceiling. Review loudspeaker aiming, delay and coverage as well as absorption. Additional treatment at the rear or overhead may be more effective than adding more panels around the stage.
Music sounds boomy despite high-NRC panels
NRC mainly summarizes mid-frequency performance and does not prove bass control. Measure low-frequency decay and seat-to-seat variation, then address room modes with tuned thick, membrane or resonant treatment and coordinated subwoofer design.
The room is too dead for acoustic performances
Use the variable system: retract curtains, rotate panels to reflective faces or select a less absorptive low-frequency setting. If the hall has only fixed absorption, the original design may have removed the flexibility needed for unamplified events.
Adjacent events interfere with each other
Internal absorption will not stop transmission through doors, partitions, roofs or ventilation. Check the isolation construction, seals, flanking paths and operable-partition ratings, then verify the separated spaces while both are operating.
