In March 2023, Belkin paused the Matter smart plugs, switch and dimmer it had planned to launch, saying it wanted to rethink the strategy and release products only when they could be meaningfully differentiated. That was a retreat from its announced roadmap—not a permanent rejection of Matter.
For current Wemo owners, however, the more important date is January 31, 2026. Belkin ended Wemo cloud services and app support for select products. Some devices already configured with Apple Home may continue working locally, while app control, remote access, Alexa and Google Assistant integrations ended for affected products.

What Belkin originally promised
Wemo was presented as an early supporter of Matter, the smart-home standard intended to let compatible devices work across major ecosystems. At CES 2022, Wemo announced a smart video doorbell and an upcoming range of switches and plugs built for Matter over Thread.

What changed in March 2023?
On March 16, 2023, Belkin said it would not proceed at that time with the Matter products expected early that year, including planned smart plugs, a light switch and a dimmer. Reports described the decision as Wemo abandoning Matter, but Belkin pushed back on that characterization.
According to Belkin’s clarification, the company remained supportive of Matter and could return to it later. Its stated condition was that Wemo should launch products capable of standing out in a standardized market.
The careful description is therefore that Wemo paused or backed away from its announced Matter roadmap. The available evidence does not support saying that Belkin permanently rejected Matter or that Wemo definitively shipped no Matter products ever. It does show that the planned early-2023 rollout was stopped, and there is no evidence here of a subsequent broad retail Wemo Matter range.

Why standardization creates a business problem
Matter is valuable to consumers because it reduces platform lock-in. A Matter plug or switch can, in principle, be commissioned into more than one major smart-home ecosystem. That makes ownership and future platform changes easier.
For manufacturers, the same standard can make basic products more interchangeable. If competing plugs and switches offer similar compatibility, a brand may have fewer opportunities to differentiate itself through software or ecosystem exclusivity. Belkin’s official explanation was strategic differentiation; it is reasonable to infer that commodity-like products could also be harder to justify commercially, but Belkin did not publicly say that Matter caused a margin problem.

- 【Easy Setup, One Control】With Matter, Skip the step of downloading and registering multiple manufacturers' apps every time you buy a new device. Instead, head straight to certified smart home platforms like Apple Home, Alexa, Google Home, SmartThings, or AiDot to control all your Matter devices.【TIP】Matter-certified hub or controller (HomePod, Echo Dot, Nest, SmartThings Hub) is required for Apple Home/Alexa/Google Home/SmartThings platforms. Alternatively, the AiDot app can be used without hub
- 【Offline-Ready Control】Once you've set up your Matter-certified devices on your LAN, they'll be able to communicate with each other directly, using the Matter protocol. This means that if your home internet connection goes offline, your Matter-certified devices will still be able to communicate and be controlled within your LAN, without relying on the internet or cloud services.
- 【Remote Control from Anywhere】Use the app to turn electronics on before you arrive home and off after you leave, no matter where you are. Using the smart plug that work with alexa manage your power usage and save money.
- 【Hands-free Voice Control】Control linkind homekit plug using simple voice commands through Apple HomeKit, Siri, Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, and SmartThings, without the need for physical input such as buttons or switches.
- 【Flexible Scheduling & Timer】Effortlessly reduce energy usage with automatic device shutdown after a set time. For example Chrismas Tree, TV, Lamp, Fan, Humidifier,Blenders, Lightbulbs
That distinction matters. The company’s 2023 decision was a product and strategy retreat, not evidence that Matter itself had failed.
Matter and Thread are not the same thing
Wemo’s announcements often paired the two technologies, but they perform different jobs:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Matter is the application standard. It defines how compatible devices are commissioned, controlled and represented to smart-home platforms.
- Thread is a low-power mesh networking technology. It provides a network connection for compatible devices.
- Matter can operate over Thread, Wi-Fi or Ethernet.
- A Thread device is not automatically a Matter device.
Belkin’s later support information identifies several Wemo products as Thread-based and says they can continue through Apple HomeKit. That does not, by itself, establish that those products support Matter. Similarly, HomeKit compatibility does not prove Matter compatibility.
The separate development that changed the ownership question
Belkin later announced that it would end Wemo cloud services and app support for select products on January 31, 2026. The company said it needed to reallocate resources across its portfolio; it did not explicitly say that the shutdown was caused by Matter or by the 2023 roadmap decision.
The sequence nevertheless makes the Matter retreat more consequential. In 2023, the issue was whether Wemo would deliver a new generation of products. In 2026, the issue became whether existing products could still be controlled at all.

- 【Matter: All-Round Compatibility】With Matter, users are no longer tied to specific platforms and works with all certified smart home platforms, such as Apple Home, Amazon Alexa, Google Home and Samsung SmartThings. You can control all your smart home devices from a single app, reducing the need for multiple apps for different devices.
- 【Matter: Smooth LAN Control】All Matter-certified devices in your local area network (LAN) will work smoothly even when your home internet goes offline. Matter allows effective communication directly between devices, without the need for a specific 'forwarding' device. For example, a Matter smart switch or sensor can turn on/off a Matter bulb directly without being connected to a cloud service, or other specific action. Once configured, communication and control between Matter devices can be achieved directly on the local network.
- 【Matter: Future-Proofing】Matter devices will be compatible with future updates and advancements in technology, ensuring that your smart home system remains up-to-date and compatible with new devices and features.
- 【Compact & Flame Retardant Design】Avoid blocking additional outlets with its compact design, and plug in your WiFi smart plug with confidence thanks to its UL certified flame retardant design and 2-year limited warranty.
- 【App & Voice Control】Control your WiFi smart plug from anywhere, anytime via the free Tapo App or just give voice commands to Siri, Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant or Samsung SmartThings. Your favorite smart assistant enables you to have a truly hands-free experience.

Which Wemo devices may still work?
Belkin says Wemo products that were configured with Apple HomeKit before the cutoff may continue operating locally through Apple’s Home app. New setup or reconfiguration through the Wemo app or HomeKit is no longer possible after the shutdown.
| Situation | What it means |
|---|---|
| Already configured in Apple Home before January 31, 2026 | May continue to work locally through Apple Home, depending on the model and configuration. |
| One of Belkin’s named Thread-based products | Belkin identifies these as continuing through HomeKit: WLS0503, WSC010, WSP100 and WDC010. |
| Alexa or Google Home user | Cloud-based integrations for affected products ended. |
| Never configured with HomeKit | The device may lose smart functionality if it depends on Wemo’s services. |
| Device requiring a reset or reconfiguration | Do not assume it can be added again after the cutoff. |
Belkin’s listed Thread products are the Wemo Smart Light Switch 3-Way (WLS0503), Wemo Stage Smart Scene Controller (WSC010), Wemo Smart Plug with Thread (WSP100) and Wemo Smart Video Doorbell Camera (WDC010). Belkin also lists other HomeKit-compatible switches, dimmers, plugs, the Wemo Bridge and Outdoor Plug that may continue locally if they were configured beforehand. Check the exact model against Belkin’s support guidance and its HomeKit product list.

If the device still works in Apple Home
- Keep it in the existing Apple Home installation.
- Avoid factory-resetting or removing it unless you have a replacement ready.
- Review automations before changing anything.
- Check whether remote access or a routine depends on a discontinued cloud service.
A device can remain controllable locally while losing remote access or integrations. A switch that responds in Apple Home may still have broken routines that depended on Wemo’s cloud, Alexa or Google Assistant.

- Remote Control: To enable HomeKit remote control, you need a HomePod, an Apple TV 4K, Apple TV HD, or an iPad. Set any of these Apple devices in your house as a HomeKit bridge and connect it to your home 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network. Keep in mind that once your HomeKit bridge is set up, it has to be kept online. If it is powered off or disconnected from the Wi-Fi, it will fail to respond when you intend to control the device remotely.
- Voice Control: You can control your devices hands free, just give voice commands to turn on/off the connected devices. Compatible with Apple HomeKit, Apple Watch, Siri, Carplay, Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant.
- Compact Size: Smart plug occupies only one socket, the device allows you to stack two mini smart plugs in the same outlet, which is convenient and practical.
- Schedule: You can schedule connected devices to turn on and off automatically by smart plugs. Save energy when lights are not needed or left on by accident. Sunrise and sunset setting are supported.
- Quality: The meross Smart outlet is made of PC flame retardant material, and has been approved for safety and quality assurance. Certified by ETL and FCC, it supports home appliance up to 15A.
If you use Alexa or Google Home
Plan to replace affected Wemo devices. Document routines, room assignments and schedules before removing them. A Matter replacement can reduce dependence on one vendor’s cloud, but Matter does not guarantee that every advanced feature works identically in every ecosystem.
If the product may qualify for a refund
Before discarding a device, check Belkin’s Wemo end-of-support refund form. The form requests information such as the model, serial number and proof of purchase. Eligibility is not guaranteed and may depend on the product and warranty circumstances.
If the product is no longer useful
Belkin recommends authorized electronic-waste recycling for products that no longer work and are not eligible for continued use or a refund.
Should you replace a functioning Wemo device?
There is no single answer:
- Apple Home users: A preconfigured device that works locally can reasonably be kept, especially if replacing an in-wall switch would require electrical work.
- Alexa and Google Home users: Replacement is the practical choice if the device depends on the discontinued integration.
- Users who expect to move platforms: Matter is worth prioritizing because it can make a future ecosystem change easier.
- Buyers seeking long-term confidence: Prefer a manufacturer with an active product line, a clear support policy and a history of firmware updates.
Buying a used Wemo device is generally a poor choice unless it is already configured in an Apple Home installation and the buyer understands that a reset may make it impossible to set up again.
How to choose a replacement
- Confirm the exact protocol. “Works with Alexa” or “Works with Google” can describe a cloud integration. Look for Matter support on the exact model, not merely on the brand.
- Choose the ecosystem. Verify support for Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings or Home Assistant as appropriate.
- Prefer local control. Check what continues working if the vendor’s cloud is unavailable.
- Check Thread infrastructure. A Matter-over-Thread device requires a compatible Thread Border Router.
- For switches and dimmers, check installation details. Confirm neutral-wire requirements, three-way compatibility, electrical load limits and in-wall-box fit.
- Review account requirements. Some products may still require a manufacturer account for setup or advanced features even when basic control is local.
Potential product ecosystems to evaluate include TP-Link Tapo or Kasa, Eve, Meross, Aqara, Philips Hue and Home Assistant. Their suitability varies by model, region and required hardware. Aqara and Philips Hue, for example, may involve a hub; Home Assistant offers more local control but requires considerably more technical setup. Verify current model support and availability before buying.
What Wemo’s retreat means for Matter
Wemo’s decision is a setback for Belkin’s Matter roadmap, particularly because the company had been associated with Matter-over-Thread products before the standard’s wider rollout. It is not proof that Matter failed or that standardization is unworkable.
The more useful lesson is to separate interoperability from vendor support. Matter may reduce dependence on a manufacturer’s cloud, but a product can still include cloud-only features, require an account, receive uneven platform support or lose support when its maker exits the market. Buyers should evaluate both the protocol and the company behind the device.
