A good fan is only as effective as its airflow at the installed duct run, exterior termination, controls, and operating habits.
They do not replace a whole-house ventilation system. Use the guidance below to select and install a bathroom exhaust fan or ducted kitchen range hood while treating airflow figures as design references rather than a universal building-code rule.

What bathroom and kitchen exhaust fans do
Local exhaust removes pollutants before they spread through the home. In a bathroom, the main targets are shower and bath moisture, humidity, odors, and airborne contaminants. In a kitchen, exhaust can remove cooking moisture, odors, grease-related emissions, and fumes. Gas cooking can also generate nitrogen dioxide and other combustion byproducts, so outdoor discharge is especially important when a gas appliance is used.

Local exhaust is not whole-house ventilation
Bathroom fans and range hoods operate where contaminants are produced and usually run intermittently or at a selected continuous rate. A whole-house ventilation system, by contrast, is designed to provide outdoor-air exchange throughout the dwelling. A local fan cannot be assumed to meet whole-house ventilation requirements, and a whole-house system cannot always substitute for a range hood’s capture of grease and cooking fumes at the appliance.
Airflow numbers: how to interpret CFM and ACH
Airflow is commonly stated in cubic feet per minute (CFM). Air changes per hour (ACH) expresses how many times the fan’s airflow would replace the room’s air in one hour. To convert a target of 5 ACH to an approximate CFM, multiply the room volume in cubic feet by 5 and divide by 60:
CFM = (room length × width × height × ACH) ÷ 60
Recommended Free Tools
For example, a 12-by-10-foot kitchen with an 8-foot ceiling has 960 cubic feet. Five ACH would be approximately 80 CFM (960 × 5 ÷ 60), before accounting for duct resistance, range-hood capture, and any additional requirements.
Bathroom example rates
The ENERGY STAR Certified Homes Version 3, Revision 07 checklist (a 2013 program document) gives example bathroom exhaust rates of 20 CFM continuous or 50 CFM intermittent. Those figures describe inspection criteria for that program version; they are not a current universal code requirement for every jurisdiction or house.

Kitchen example rates
The same checklist gives an example of 5 ACH continuous for a kitchen. Alternatively, it lists 100 CFM intermittent and, when the exhaust is not integrated with the range, an additional 5 ACH condition based on kitchen volume. DOE Building Science Education guidance also discusses at least 5 ACH for kitchen exhaust. Treat this as agency guidance and a program-specific example, not a blanket legal requirement.
| Application | Published example | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Bathroom | 20 CFM continuous or 50 CFM intermittent | Example from ENERGY STAR Certified Homes Version 3 (Rev. 07), 2013; verify current local requirements. |
| Kitchen | 5 ACH continuous | Calculate from kitchen volume; duct resistance and capture still matter. |
| Kitchen alternative | 100 CFM intermittent, plus 5 ACH when exhaust is not integrated with the range | Checklist-specific condition; do not generalize it as universal code. |
Actual required airflow can depend on jurisdiction, room size, appliance type, pressure relationships, makeup-air rules, and whether the fan is continuous or intermittent. Check the adopted mechanical and building codes or ask a qualified installer before ordering equipment.

1. Match the operating mode to the moisture load
A continuous fan can maintain a lower background rate, while an intermittent fan removes a larger amount of air during and after a shower. A timer, humidity sensor, or occupancy sensor can keep the fan running long enough to dry surfaces without requiring someone to remember the switch. Select controls that are compatible with the fan and the electrical installation.
2. Compare rated airflow under real installation conditions
Manufacturers often publish a nominal CFM, but elbows, long runs, small ducts, dampers, and restrictive terminations reduce delivered airflow. Compare performance data at the intended static pressure when it is available, not only the free-air number. A larger nominal fan is not automatically better if its duct is undersized or poorly routed.
3. Check sound ratings
Sound is commonly listed in sones. A quieter fan is more likely to be used consistently, especially in a powder room near living spaces or a bathroom used at night. DOE’s ENERGY STAR checklist includes sound criteria for its program context, but those criteria should not be presented as a universal legal limit. Confirm the rating method and installation assumptions before comparing products.

4. Verify duct and termination compatibility
Confirm the fan’s required duct diameter, allowable duct length, and whether a backdraft damper is included. Plan a route that reaches an exterior wall or roof termination with as few bends as practical. The exterior cap should resist rain, snow, insects, and wind while allowing the fan to discharge freely.

How to choose a ducted kitchen range hood or exhaust fan
Capture comes before the fan rating
A range hood must capture the rising plume at the cooking surface. Hood depth, width, mounting height, side panels, and the location of burners affect capture. A powerful remote fan cannot recover contaminants that escaped around a shallow or poorly positioned hood. Follow the hood manufacturer’s installation height and overhang instructions.
Account for cooking type
Gas burners add combustion byproducts, including nitrogen dioxide, to the moisture, odors, and grease produced by cooking. Outdoor exhaust is therefore preferable to recirculation. Electric and induction cooking still produce moisture and particles from food and oils, so they also benefit from effective capture and outdoor discharge.
Consider makeup air and pressure
Exhausting air from a tight home can depressurize the building. That pressure difference may cause outdoor air to enter through unintended leaks or interfere with combustion appliances. Whether dedicated makeup air is required depends on local code, hood airflow, building tightness, and appliance design. Have a qualified professional evaluate the pressure and combustion-safety implications rather than adding an improvised opening.
Installation: a reliable sequence
- Confirm requirements. Identify the room, appliance type, expected operating mode, local code provisions, electrical circuit requirements, and any makeup-air provisions. Do not rely on the 2013 ENERGY STAR checklist as proof of current code compliance.
- Choose the exterior discharge point. Select a wall or roof location that keeps the outlet away from windows, doors, soffit intakes, and other openings as required by local rules. Never terminate a kitchen or bathroom exhaust into an attic, crawlspace, wall cavity, or floor interstitial space.
- Lay out the duct route. Keep the run short and direct, use smooth transitions, and minimize elbows. Use the duct diameter specified for the fan or hood. A route that is physically possible may still be too restrictive for the rated airflow.
- Select the duct material. Flexible duct can be appropriate for a bathroom-only application when installed as directed, but it should be pulled taut, supported, and kept free of kinks. Rigid or hard duct generally offers lower resistance and is often preferred for kitchen exhaust. DOE’s Weatherization Assistance Program published “Job Aid 18-1: Install Exhaust Fan Flex Duct (Bath Fan Only)” and “Job Aid 18-2: Install a Hard-Ducted Exhaust Vent,” both dated July 1, 2024. These job aids explain installation methods; they do not establish one duct size or route for every project.
- Seal and support the duct. Seal joints with approved foil tape or mastic rather than ordinary cloth duct tape. Support the run so it does not sag, disconnect, or collect condensate. Insulate ductwork where it passes through cold spaces when required to limit condensation.
- Install the exterior termination. Use a compatible wall cap or roof cap with a weather-resistant hood and backdraft control. Flash and seal a roof penetration according to roofing practice. Make sure the damper can open fully when the fan operates.
- Complete electrical work safely. Follow the fan or hood wiring diagram, provide the required disconnecting means, and use a qualified electrician where local rules or the existing circuit require it. Bathroom locations may have additional requirements for protection from shock and moisture.
- Set controls and commission. Test the switch, timer, humidity sensor, or speed control. With the system running, check that the exterior damper opens, air moves in the intended direction, and no excessive vibration or rattling occurs. Verify that the fan continues for the programmed run-on period after a shower or cooking session.
Ducting details that determine performance
Flex duct versus hard duct
Flex duct is easier to route but develops substantially more resistance when compressed, sharply bent, or left sagging. A smooth, supported run is essential. Hard duct usually preserves airflow better over a long route and is particularly valuable for a kitchen hood, where grease and higher airflow make restrictions more consequential. Use transitions that match the fan outlet without creating an abrupt internal step.

Why termination matters
A stuck damper, clogged screen, or cap installed in a high-pressure wind zone can reduce airflow and cause backdrafting. Inspect the outlet during commissioning and maintenance. Keep the termination clear of lint, grease, leaves, ice, and insect nests. Do not add fine mesh that can clog rapidly unless the equipment instructions and local requirements specifically call for it.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Controls, energy use, and operating habits
Run a bathroom fan during a shower and long enough afterward to remove residual moisture. A humidity-sensing control can automate this, but it should be adjusted so normal seasonal humidity does not cause constant nuisance operation. A kitchen hood should run whenever cooking produces steam, smoke, or grease, and it should remain on briefly after cooking to clear the captured plume.
Compare wattage, standby consumption, speed settings, and any available energy certification along with airflow and sound. Lower electrical use is useful only if the fan still delivers the required airflow at the installed duct resistance. A fan that is rarely used because it is loud or difficult to control can perform worse in practice than a quieter, properly controlled model.
Maintenance and common failure symptoms
Routine checks
- Clean bathroom grilles and washable filters according to the manufacturer’s interval.
- Degrease a kitchen hood’s filters and surrounding surfaces regularly; accumulated grease increases fire risk and restricts airflow.
- Inspect the exterior cap and damper at least seasonally for blockage, damage, or nesting.
- Listen for new rattling, bearing noise, or vibration that may indicate a loose housing, damper, or duct connection.
- Check that a timer or humidity control actually turns the fan off after the programmed period.
Symptom: steam or odors remain
First verify that the fan is actually running and that the exterior damper opens. Then inspect the grille, filter, duct for kinks or disconnections, and termination for blockage. If the route is long or has several elbows, the fan may be delivering far less than its free-air rating. Measure airflow with appropriate equipment or have a professional evaluate the system.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Symptom: condensation or dripping
Condensation can form in an uninsulated duct passing through a cold attic or roof space, especially when the duct sags. Correct the slope and support, insulate where appropriate, and repair the exterior cap so rain cannot enter. A bathroom fan should not discharge into an attic, where moisture can damage insulation and framing.

Symptom: excessive noise
Check for loose mounting screws, a vibrating grille, a misaligned damper, or a duct that contacts framing. If the fan is inherently too loud for the room, replacement with a quieter model may improve use, but the replacement must still match the existing duct and electrical requirements.
Comparing candidate fans before purchase
Use the same installation assumptions for every candidate. A fair comparison includes:
| Comparison point | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Airflow | What CFM is delivered at the expected static pressure, not only in free air? |
| Sound | What is the sone rating, and under what airflow and installation conditions was it measured? |
| Duct compatibility | What diameter, length, elbows, transitions, and termination does the installation allow? |
| Exterior discharge | Is a backdraft damper supplied, and is a compatible wall or roof cap available? |
| Controls | Can it support continuous, intermittent, timer, humidity, occupancy, or variable-speed operation? |
| Energy | What is the operating wattage, standby draw, and applicable certification? |
No single model can be named a winner without the room volume, duct route, desired controls, sound tolerance, and local requirements. Select the product that satisfies the complete installation rather than the largest advertised CFM.
Code, permits, and professional help
Airflow, electrical, termination, makeup-air, fire-safety, and combustion-air rules vary by jurisdiction and project. A remodel may also trigger permit, roof-penetration, or structural requirements. Before cutting a wall or roof, confirm the adopted code and required inspection with the local building department. Engage a qualified installer when the duct passes through difficult spaces, the hood has high airflow, the home is very tight, gas appliances are present, or the work involves a new circuit or roof flashing.
The practical standard is straightforward: capture contaminants at the source, move the design airflow through a compatible duct, discharge outdoors, and verify operation after installation. Treat published CFM and ACH figures as context for design decisions, then confirm the requirements that apply to the specific house and location.
