Basil Companion Plants: 10 Choices for Mixed Beds and Containers

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Tomatoes and peppers are the best-supported companions for basil. University extension guides list both pairings directly, and Maryland Extension illustrates alternating basil with tomatoes and interplanting basil among peppers. Eight other plants—oregano, parsley, chives, nasturtium, onions, carrots, celery and calendula—can fit a diverse vegetable or herb bed, but their support is indirect: a University of California chart lists them with tomatoes rather than proving a basil-specific benefit.

Use the list as a planning guide, not a promise of larger harvests or pest control. The Cornell companion-planting guide hosted by Nebraska Extension says traditional combinations have not been scientifically proven, while Delaware Extension notes that many claims rest on folklore. Diversity may make host plants harder for pests to find, but no source establishes that every plant below repels a named pest or increases basil yield.

How to interpret the 10 basil companions

The plants below are grouped by the kind of evidence behind the pairing. “Direct basil listing” means an extension chart names basil with that plant. “Practical interplanting” means an extension service shows the plants together in a bed or gives the pairing as a layout example. “Listed with tomatoes” means the plant appears in a tomato companion chart; it may be a sensible neighbor in the same mixed bed, but that is not the same as a tested basil relationship. “Pollinator or diversity support” describes a garden function rather than an effect on basil growth.

  • Directly listed with basil: tomatoes and peppers.
  • Listed alongside tomatoes: oregano, parsley, chives, nasturtium, onions, carrots, celery and calendula.
  • Pollinator context: flowering basil and other flowering herbs can add blooms and habitat, independent of a companion claim.

Whatever the label, each crop still needs suitable light, water, mature space and a climate that fits its season. Companion charts cannot override those basic requirements.

10 plants that can grow well near basil

1. Tomatoes — the clearest traditional pairing

Tomatoes are listed with basil in both the Cornell guide hosted by Nebraska Extension and the UC Agriculture and Natural Resources companion chart. Maryland Extension gives a concrete layout example: alternate basil and tomato plants. That makes tomatoes the strongest choice when you want a pairing supported by both a chart and a practical interplanting illustration.

Penn State Extension also describes interplanting basil with tomatoes as a way basil may help mask tomato plants from thrips. Treat that as extension guidance, not a guaranteed control method or an independently verified yield result. Leave enough room for the tomato’s mature canopy and for air movement around basil; the alternating pattern is an example, not a universal spacing prescription.

2. Peppers — another directly listed match

Peppers appear with basil in the Nebraska-hosted Cornell chart and the UCANR chart. Maryland Extension shows basil interplanted with peppers, and Virginia Cooperative Extension uses pepper and basil together as a companion-planting example. These sources make peppers the other high-confidence choice for a basil bed.

Plant the two crops where they receive the light and warmth required by both. In a container, check the mature size of the pepper variety before adding basil so the foliage does not become cramped. The evidence supports growing them together; it does not establish a universal pest-repelling or yield-boosting effect.

3. Oregano — a listed tomato-bed neighbor with flowers

UCANR lists oregano among plants associated with tomatoes. Because tomatoes are a directly listed basil pairing, oregano can be used as a possible neighbor in a mixed tomato-basil bed, but no cited source calls oregano a basil-specific companion.

Oregano also fits the pollinator angle when allowed to flower. UF/IFAS lists oregano among herbs that produce flower spikes with many blooms. Use it where its mature size and watering needs fit the bed, and view the flowers as a biodiversity feature rather than proof that oregano improves basil growth.

4. Parsley — useful in a diverse herb and vegetable bed

Parsley appears in UCANR’s list of plants associated with tomatoes. That supports placing parsley near basil as part of a mixed planting, not claiming a direct basil benefit. Parsley and basil may have different preferred planting dates in your area, so schedule each according to local conditions rather than forcing them into one sowing window.

Keep the plants arranged so harvesting one does not crush the other. A mixed bed can make better use of space, but the chart does not provide a spacing rule; follow the seed packet or transplant label for each crop.

5. Chives — a compact herb for the same mixed bed

Chives are also listed by UCANR with tomatoes. That makes them a reasonable candidate around basil when you are already growing a tomato-centered bed. The listing is not evidence that chives repel a particular basil pest or increase basil’s leaf production.

Place chives where their clumps will not shade young basil. In containers, reserve enough room for each plant to remain accessible for cutting and watering, and avoid treating the chart as a substitute for the plants’ individual light requirements.

6. Nasturtium — a flowering diversity option

UCANR includes nasturtium among plants associated with tomatoes. You can therefore use nasturtium as a flowering neighbor in a tomato-basil planting, provided its growth habit fits the available space. The source does not establish a direct basil interaction or a guaranteed insect-control result.

Its value in this list is diversity and flowers. If it sprawls into the basil, redirect or thin it so the herb keeps adequate airflow and light. A companion should support the bed’s layout, not overwhelm the crop you are growing for leaves.

7. Onions — a root-and-leaf combination in a mixed bed

Onions appear in UCANR’s tomato companion chart, so they can share a diversified bed that also contains basil and tomatoes. This is a “listed with tomatoes” relationship, not a basil-specific recommendation. No cited extension source confirms that onions protect basil from a named pest.

Use the onion variety’s planting instructions and mature size to decide how close it can sit to basil. Keep the foliage from crowding the herb, and make sure irrigation reaches both crops without leaving the basil continually wet.

8. Carrots — a possible cool-season neighbor

Carrots are another plant UCANR lists with tomatoes. They can be included in a mixed vegetable bed where basil occupies warm-season space, but the chart alone does not show that carrots improve basil performance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Because basil is warm-season, local frost timing matters more than the companion label. Penn State Extension advises sowing basil outdoors after frost risk has passed, or starting it indoors six weeks before outdoor planting. Carrots may be sown on a different schedule in your climate, so plan the bed in succession rather than delaying either crop to make the calendars identical.

Basilia Basil Seeds for Eating, Edible Sweet Basil Seed, 1 lb Bag
  • BASIL SEEDS WITH TWICE THE FIBER OF CHIA: One ingredient, whole sweet basil seed (Ocimum basilicum), cleaned and packed for eating rather than planting. Serving for serving they carry about double the fiber of chia.
  • NEUTRAL ENOUGH FOR ANYTHING: Basil seeds carry almost no flavor of their own, which is exactly why they work everywhere. They take on whatever you mix them into, from lemonade and coffee to yogurt, smoothies and overnight oats.
  • SOAK 5 TO 10 MINUTES: Stir a spoonful into water or juice and the seeds swell to several times their size, turning translucent around a black center. Five minutes gives a firmer bead, ten a softer one. Always hydrate before eating.
  • LOADED WATER, SMOOTHIES AND PUDDING: Sold elsewhere as sabja or tukmaria, these are the seeds used in falooda and in basil seed drinks. Stir them into lemonade, iced tea, yogurt, overnight oats or a chia-style pudding.
  • 1 LB RESEALABLE BAG: Four times the seed of the 4 oz pouch and the size to keep on the shelf once a glass of loaded water is part of your day. Gluten free, keto friendly, vegan and plant based, with no sugar, additives or fillers.

9. Celery — include it only when moisture and space work

Celery is listed with tomatoes in the UCANR chart and can be considered for a mixed bed containing basil. The evidence remains indirect: no source cited here demonstrates a celery-basil benefit.

Before combining them, compare the watering demands and mature dimensions of your varieties. If one crop requires conditions that leave the other stressed, separate them within the bed or use different containers. Companion planting is optional; meeting each crop’s requirements is not.

10. Calendula — flowers for a more varied planting

Calendula appears in UCANR’s tomato-associated list. It is therefore a possible flowering neighbor around a tomato-and-basil planting, rather than a proven basil companion. Keep the flowers where they do not shade the herb or block access for harvesting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Calendula contributes to a more varied garden, but do not translate that diversity into a promise of pest suppression. Delaware Extension explains that mixed plantings may disrupt a pest’s ability to locate its host; that is a general mechanism, not evidence for a specific calendula-basil result.

Why flowering basil and diversity matter

Basil does not have to be treated only as a leaf crop. UF/IFAS lists basil among herbs with flower spikes bearing many blooms, and Penn State says flowering basil attracts sweat bees. If pollinators are a priority, allow some plants to flower after harvesting the leaves you need. The trade-off is that flowering changes the plant’s use from maximum tender-leaf production to a dual herb-and-flower role, so decide how many plants to reserve for blooms.

UF/IFAS also names oregano, mint, marjoram and sage as herbs with flower spikes and many blooms. They can help create a pollinator-oriented herb area, but that information does not prove they are compatible in every basil container or that they improve basil growth. Delaware Extension describes sweet alyssum as low-growing and compact and notes its use for supporting beneficial insects; it is another diversity option, not one of the ten basil pairings above.

When and how to plant basil with companions

1. Set the calendar from frost, not the companion chart

Basil is a warm-season herb. Penn State Extension recommends sowing it outdoors after the danger of frost has passed. For an earlier start, sow indoors about six weeks before outdoor planting and transplant after the local frost risk has ended. A heat mat is mentioned in Penn State’s indoor-starting guidance as an optional seed-starting aid, not a requirement for every gardener.

2. Choose a layout that matches the crop

Maryland Extension’s alternating basil-and-tomato pattern and its basil-among-peppers example show how interplanting can be arranged. Treat those diagrams as illustrations rather than fixed spacing prescriptions. Check each plant’s mature width, preserve airflow, and keep paths or container edges accessible for watering and harvest.

3. Match light and water before adding a neighbor

Start with the main crop—often tomatoes or peppers—then place basil where it receives suitable light without being shaded by a mature canopy. Compare irrigation needs before combining any of the indirect candidates. If a plant needs a distinctly different moisture regime, use a separate section of the bed or another container.

4. Leave room for flowers and beneficial insects

If your goal includes pollinators, reserve space for basil and other flowering herbs to bloom. Keep flowers visible and reachable rather than burying them under dense foliage. This supports a diverse garden without claiming that a particular flower will control a particular pest.

What companion planting can—and cannot—promise

The Cornell guide hosted by Nebraska Extension states: “None has been scientifically proven, but some do seem to make good common sense as interplants. Test them yourself.” Delaware Extension similarly warns that traditional companion claims are often based on little more than folklore. Those cautions apply to the ten plants in this article.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is a plausible reason to diversify: Delaware Extension explains that growing different species together can make it harder for pests to locate their host plants. That principle does not prove that basil will repel thrips, hornworms or any other named pest. Penn State’s basil guidance mentions masking tomatoes from thrips and tomato hornworms, while its herb-companion page specifically says interplanting basil with tomatoes may help mask tomato plants from thrips. Present those statements as extension advice and monitor your plants rather than relying on basil as pest protection.

Choosing the right pairing for your garden

  • Growing tomatoes: Choose basil first; it has the strongest combination of chart support and a practical alternating-layout example.
  • Growing peppers: Basil is directly listed and illustrated in an interplanting example, making it a strong option for the same bed.
  • Building a mixed vegetable bed: Add one or more of oregano, parsley, chives, nasturtium, onions, carrots, celery or calendula as indirect, tomato-associated neighbors, checking each crop’s seasonal and space requirements.
  • Prioritizing pollinators: Let some basil flower and combine it with flowering herbs or compact beneficial-insect plants such as sweet alyssum. This is a habitat strategy, not a basil-yield guarantee.
  • Using containers: Favor basil with one tomato or pepper only when the container can accommodate mature roots and foliage. Otherwise, separate containers prevent crowding and make watering easier.

Common problems and practical fixes

Basil is planted before the last frost

Cold-sensitive basil can stall when planted too early. Start indoors six weeks before the intended outdoor date, then wait until frost risk has passed before transplanting.

The companion shades or crowds the basil

Rework the layout around mature size, not the size of young transplants. Thin, redirect or relocate an aggressive neighbor, and keep foliage from resting against the basil.

Plants in the same bed need different watering

Separate crops with incompatible moisture needs into different bed sections or containers. A companion label does not make conflicting irrigation requirements disappear.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You expect pest control that does not occur

Inspect leaves and stems regularly and respond to the actual pest. Diversity may interfere with host-finding, but the cited sources do not guarantee suppression from any single basil pairing.

You want leaves and flowers from the same basil plants

Reserve some plants for harvesting and allow others to flower for sweat bees and other pollinators. This gives the bed both culinary and habitat value without sacrificing every plant to one purpose.
