Are Your Tomato Leaves Curling? 7 Causes and How to Fix Them Fast

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Curled tomato leaves are a symptom, not a diagnosis. The quickest way to find the cause is to check which leaves are affected, whether they curl upward or become twisted and narrow, how the soil feels at root depth, and whether you see aphids, whiteflies, mottling, honeydew, or signs of chemical exposure.

Lower leaves that roll upward during hot, dry weather are often experiencing harmless physiological leaf roll. New growth that is distorted, shoestring-like, mottled, stunted, or accompanied by abnormal fruit is more concerning and may point to herbicide injury or a virus. Inspect the plant before applying fertilizer or pesticide.

Quick diagnosis: what do the curled leaves look like?

What you notice Most likely possibilities First action
Lower leaves roll upward and inward; leaves remain green, firm, and leathery Physiological leaf roll caused by heat, drought, root stress, rapid growth, or pruning Check root-zone moisture and reduce environmental stress
Leaves curl around clusters of tiny insects; sticky residue is present Aphids Inspect leaf undersides and rinse insects away with water
New leaves are narrow, twisted, cupped, crinkled, or shoestring-like Herbicide injury or a virus Review recent chemical, mulch, and lawn-care exposure; seek diagnostic help if necessary
Leaves are mottled yellow and green, plants are stunted, or fruit is abnormal Virus Do not try random sprays; isolate the diagnosis and consider removing the plant
Young leaves curl upward and yellow; tiny whiteflies fly up when foliage is disturbed Tomato yellow leaf curl virus Manage whiteflies and remove severely symptomatic plants
Soil is bone-dry several inches down or stays saturated Drought, irregular watering, poor drainage, or root injury Correct moisture and drainage before diagnosing disease
Symptoms began after severe pruning or heavy nitrogen fertilization Cultural or nutritional stress Stop adding fertilizer and avoid further aggressive pruning

These clues are not absolute. Herbicide injury and some viral diseases can look very similar, and a plant may have more than one stress at the same time.

1. Physiological leaf roll from heat, drought, or root stress

Physiological leaf roll is one of the least alarming explanations. It commonly begins on the lower leaves. The edges roll upward and inward until the sides overlap, and the leaves may feel firm, thick, or leathery. Hot weather, dry soil, rapid growth, severe pruning, and other stresses can trigger it.

This condition is generally noninfectious. A tomato plant with otherwise healthy green foliage can continue growing and producing tomatoes, and extension guidance indicates that physiological leaf roll normally does not noticeably reduce yield.

What to do

  1. Check moisture several inches below the surface, close to—but not directly against—the main stem.
  2. If the root zone is dry, water slowly and thoroughly so moisture reaches the roots instead of running off.
  3. Apply a layer of organic mulch to reduce evaporation and moderate soil temperature, leaving space around the stem.
  4. Avoid severe pruning and repeated cycles of extreme dryness followed by saturation.

Do not remove a healthy tomato plant solely because its lower leaves have rolled upward during hot weather. The leaves may not uncurl even after conditions improve, but new growth can return to normal.

2. Irregular watering, drought, or root-zone problems

Water stress can produce leaf curl that resembles disease. Brief surface sprinkling may wet the top layer without hydrating the main root zone. Conversely, overwatering or poorly drained soil can deprive roots of oxygen and cause wilt-like symptoms. Both drought and waterlogged roots can leave a plant stressed enough to curl its leaves.

As a general benchmark, tomatoes need roughly 1 inch of rainfall or irrigation per week, but the right amount varies with soil type, temperature, wind, plant size, and rainfall. Sandy soil may need more frequent irrigation; heavy soil may need less frequent watering and better drainage.

What to do

  1. Push a finger or trowel several inches into the soil rather than judging moisture from the surface.
  2. If the soil is dry, soak the root zone deeply. A brief sprinkle is unlikely to correct significant drought stress.
  3. If the soil remains soggy, reduce watering frequency and investigate drainage, compacted soil, containers without adequate drainage, or blocked irrigation.
  4. Mulch around the plant, but keep mulch from touching the stem.
  5. Prefer drip irrigation or a soaker hose to routine overhead watering. Delivering water to the root zone helps limit evaporation and keeps foliage drier.

If inconsistent watering is the recurring problem, a soaker hose for tomato plants can make root-zone watering easier. The hose is not a cure for viruses or herbicide injury; the benefit is more even moisture, not a particular brand or device.

3. Aphids

Aphids are small, soft-bodied insects that gather on young stems, tender new growth, and the undersides of leaves. They may be green, yellow, brown, black, or nearly translucent. Feeding can cause curling, yellowing, wilting, stunting, and distorted new growth. Aphids also produce sticky honeydew, which may make leaves feel tacky or encourage dark sooty mold.

Look closely before treating. A small aphid population may cause little damage, and beneficial insects such as lady beetles, lacewings, and syrphid larvae often help control them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What to do

  1. Turn over curled leaves and inspect the newest growth, stems, and leaf undersides.
  2. Use a firm stream of water to dislodge aphids. Repeat as needed while checking whether populations are increasing.
  3. If aphids are numerous enough to distort growth or cause stunting, use an insecticidal soap, horticultural oil, or another product specifically labeled for aphids and tomatoes.
  4. Spray the insects directly and cover leaf undersides as the label directs. These products generally work through contact rather than by curing damage already done.
  5. Follow all label instructions, including precautions about heat, sunlight, harvest intervals, and repeat applications.

For a confirmed aphid infestation, a tomato-safe insecticidal soap may be useful if tomatoes and aphids are both listed on the product label. Do not use homemade dish-soap mixtures as a substitute: formulations differ, and concentrated household detergents can injure foliage.

Important: insecticidal soap will not cure a virus that an aphid may already have transmitted. Use it only when aphids are actually present and treatment is justified.

4. Herbicide drift, contaminated equipment, or treated grass clippings

Herbicide injury often appears first on new growth. Leaves may become narrow, twisted, cupped, crinkled, curled, or unusually “shoestring-like.” Veins may thicken, and stems can become distorted or brittle. Tomatoes are particularly sensitive to growth-regulator herbicides such as 2,4-D and dicamba.

Exposure does not require spraying the tomato directly. Common routes include:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • spray drift from a nearby lawn or garden application;
  • runoff or vapors from a recently treated area;
  • a sprayer previously used for lawn weed killer and then used on vegetables;
  • grass clippings from a treated lawn used as mulch; and
  • compost or manure containing residues from treated forage or lawn material.

What to do

  1. Stop using any suspected treated grass clippings or questionable compost around edible plants.
  2. Prevent further exposure and do not use the same sprayer for lawn herbicides and vegetable crops.
  3. Note when the symptoms began, what products were used nearby, the wind direction, and whether plants closest to the application are affected most severely.
  4. Compare several plants. Widespread distortion after a nearby lawn treatment is a useful exposure clue.
  5. Contact a local extension office or plant diagnostic laboratory if the diagnosis is uncertain.

There is no spray that reverses herbicide injury. Mildly affected plants may produce healthier new growth if exposure stops, but severely injured plants may not recover. Do not eat produce if the chemical involved, application history, or product instructions make harvest safety uncertain.

5. Common tomato viruses

Viruses can cause curled or distorted leaves, but curl alone is not enough to identify one. More suggestive signs include mottled yellow and light-green foliage, ringspots, dark-green banding, unusually narrow leaves, stunting, poor vigor, and abnormal fruit.

Cucumber mosaic virus and herbicide injury can look remarkably alike. Without a clear chemical-exposure history, visual diagnosis may not be reliable.

What to do

  • Compare affected plants with healthy neighboring plants.
  • Look for insect vectors, especially aphids and whiteflies, while remembering that finding insects does not prove they caused the symptoms.
  • Record whether symptoms are scattered among plants or appearing throughout a bed.
  • Avoid working through wet plants, and clean hands and tools between plants to reduce mechanical spread of some viruses.
  • Seek local extension or laboratory confirmation when the distinction between virus and herbicide injury matters.

Plants with convincing virus symptoms generally do not recover, and chemical sprays do not cure the infection. Follow local extension guidance for removal and disposal. Do not place a suspected infected plant in home compost unless local guidance confirms that practice is appropriate.

6. Tomato yellow leaf curl virus and whiteflies

Tomato yellow leaf curl virus is a distinct virus problem transmitted by whiteflies. Symptoms can include upward-curling leaflet margins, yellowing of young leaves, stunting, flower abortion, and sharply reduced fruit production. Tiny whiteflies may fly up when the foliage is disturbed; their immature stages are often found on leaf undersides.

The importance of this disease varies by region and season. It is a major concern in some commercial tomato-growing areas, but the risk to a home garden depends on local conditions and the presence of the virus and its whitefly vector.

What to do

  1. Inspect young leaves and their undersides for whiteflies and immature stages.
  2. Remove severely symptomatic plants according to local extension recommendations to reduce sources of infection.
  3. Control weeds that can harbor whiteflies or virus hosts where local guidance recommends it.
  4. Use physical exclusion or reflective materials where appropriate for your growing system and climate.
  5. For future plantings in areas with recurring problems, select cultivars bred for resistance when those varieties are suitable and available locally.

Controlling whiteflies may reduce spread, but it will not restore a plant that is already infected. A general insecticide cannot be presented as a cure for the virus. Because resistant varieties and disease pressure are region-specific, consult local extension guidance before choosing seed or transplants.

7. Cultural or nutritional stress

Severe pruning, rapid growth, excessive nitrogen, and some fertilizer imbalances can contribute to leaf roll or make a tomato more vulnerable to heat and water stress. However, curled leaves do not prove that the plant has a nutrient deficiency.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Adding more fertilizer without a diagnosis can make the problem worse. Excess nitrogen may encourage lush, tender growth while delaying fruiting and increasing stress on the plant.

What to do

  1. Stop adding fertilizer until the soil and plant symptoms have been assessed.
  2. Use a soil test before applying corrective nutrients.
  3. Avoid aggressive pruning, especially during hot or dry conditions.
  4. Maintain consistent soil moisture.
  5. Do not repeatedly apply high-nitrogen fertilizer without a soil-based reason.

If the leaves are green, firm, free of mottling and insects, and the problem began after heavy pruning or rapid fertilization, cultural stress is more likely than a contagious disease. A home soil test kit for a vegetable garden can help screen the soil before you make a fertilizer decision, but it cannot diagnose viruses, aphids, or herbicide injury.

When should you remove the tomato plant?

Do not remove a plant merely because lower leaves have curled upward in hot weather. Physiological leaf roll is usually harmless, and the plant can continue producing.

Removal becomes more reasonable when:

  • the plant has strong virus-like symptoms such as severe mottling, stunting, distortion, or abnormal fruit;
  • symptoms are spreading and no environmental or insect explanation fits;
  • the plant is severely damaged by herbicide and is unlikely to recover; or
  • local extension guidance recommends removal because a particular virus is present in your area.

Before removing a questionable plant, photograph the leaves, note recent weather and chemical exposure, and ask a local plant clinic or extension service for advice when practical. Diagnosis can prevent you from removing healthy plants or spreading a problem through tools and hands.

What not to do

  • Do not spray randomly. Fungicide, insecticide, and fertilizer will not solve curling caused by drought, heat, herbicide injury, or a virus.
  • Do not assume every curl is a disease. Physiological leaf roll is common under stress and usually does not reduce yield.
  • Do not use homemade dish-soap recipes on edible plants. Use a labeled insecticidal soap only when the pest is present and tomatoes are listed.
  • Do not use treated grass clippings as mulch. Herbicide residues can injure tomatoes.
  • Do not overcorrect watering. Flooding dry soil can damage roots; constantly wet soil is also harmful.
  • Do not promise that leaves will uncurl. Environmental damage may remain visible even after new growth improves.

Prevention checklist

  • Check soil moisture several inches down and water the root zone deeply when needed.
  • Keep moisture more even with mulch, while leaving a gap around each stem.
  • Use drip irrigation or a soaker hose where practical, and avoid routine overhead watering.
  • Scout weekly, especially the undersides of young leaves, for aphids and whiteflies.
  • Separate lawn-herbicide equipment from vegetable-garden equipment.
  • Ask whether grass clippings or compost have been exposed to herbicides before using them near tomatoes.
  • Prune moderately and avoid removing large amounts of foliage during heat or drought.
  • Test soil before applying substantial fertilizer, particularly nitrogen.
  • Clean tools and hands between plants when virus symptoms are suspected.
  • Choose locally appropriate resistant cultivars when a recurring virus problem is confirmed.

When to seek expert help

Contact a local university extension office, plant clinic, or diagnostic laboratory when new growth is severely distorted, several plants are affected in a pattern that suggests drift, virus and herbicide injury are difficult to distinguish, or a valuable planting is declining despite corrected watering and pest management. Availability, fees, submission requirements, and turnaround times vary by location, so use a service that operates in your region.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will curled tomato leaves uncurl?

Not always. Leaves affected by physiological leaf roll or chemical injury may remain curled, even if the plant stops worsening. Judge recovery by the condition of new growth, overall vigor, flowering, and fruit production.

Should I cut off curled tomato leaves?

Do not remove healthy lower leaves solely because they have rolled upward in hot or dry weather. Remove severely damaged or diseased material only when appropriate, and follow local guidance if a virus is suspected.

Can overwatering cause tomato leaves to curl?

Yes. Waterlogged soil can injure roots and create wilt-like symptoms. Check the soil several inches down and correct drainage or watering frequency rather than adding more water automatically.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can aphids cause tomato leaves to curl?

Yes. Aphids commonly gather on young growth and leaf undersides and may cause curling, distortion, yellowing, or stunting. Confirm that aphids are present before treating.

How can I tell herbicide injury from a tomato virus?

Both can cause narrow, twisted, cupped, or shoestring-like new growth. Look for a recent lawn or garden herbicide application, contaminated equipment, or treated mulch, and seek extension or laboratory help when the symptoms cannot be distinguished visually.

The Bottom Line

Start with the simplest evidence: check root-zone moisture, inspect leaf undersides, examine new growth, and review recent pruning, fertilizer, lawn-care, and weather events. Lower leaves that roll upward but remain green and leathery are often a reversible stress response—not a reason to destroy the plant. Distorted new growth, mottling, stunting, abnormal fruit, or a clear herbicide-exposure pattern deserves a more cautious diagnosis before you spray or replant.
