Aqara FP300 Presence Sensor Review: The Only Smart Home Sensor You Need?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Verdict: The Aqara FP300 is one of the most versatile battery-powered room sensors available, but it is not the only sensor most homes need. It combines 60GHz mmWave presence detection, PIR motion sensing, illuminance, temperature and humidity in one compact device. That makes it an excellent choice for occupancy-aware lighting and climate automations—but not a replacement for door contacts, leak sensors, smoke alarms, air-quality monitors or multi-zone presence systems.

The most important buying decision is the connection mode. Thread/Matter is the better route for compatible smart-home platforms without an Aqara hub; Zigbee requires an Aqara hub but provides deeper Aqara Home configuration.

What the Aqara FP300 does

Aqara describes the FP300 as a five-in-one sensor. Its functions are:

#1 Best Overall
Aqara Presence Sensor FP300 Wireless 5-in-1 Motion Sensor with mmWave | PIR, Light, Temperature & Humidity Detection, Thread & Zigbee, Supports HomeKit, Home Assistant, Alexa, Google Home
  • [Precise AI-Powered Presence Sensor] Powered by advanced AI, PIR, and 60GHz mmWave radar, the FP300 accurately detects human presence even when you’re still. Its adaptive AI learning continuously optimizes sensitivity to reduce false triggers, ensuring lights and devices stay on even when you’re lounging on the couch, and off when they need to be.
  • [Broad Compatibility] Supports Matter over Thread and Zigbee for seamless integration with major ecosystems. Works with Apple Home, Home Assistant, Alexa, Google Home, SmartThings, and Homey via Matter for flexible, reliable automation. (* For third-party Matter ecosystems, a corresponding Thread Border Router and Matter Controller are required. * For Aqara, a Zigbee 3.0 or Matter hub like M200/M3/G410/etc, except G2H, with the latest firmware is needed.)
  • [5-in-1 Multi-Sensor] Combines 60GHz mmWave, PIR, light, temperature, and humidity sensors into one compact device. This all-in-one design enables precise detection of presence and environmental conditions, helping automate lighting, climate control, and security systems for a smarter and more energy-efficient home.
  • [Long Battery Life & Energy Efficiency] Powered by two replaceable CR2450 batteries, the FP300 offers up to 3 years of battery life in Zigbee mode or 2 years in Thread mode. Optional sensor deactivation helps conserve energy, ensuring consistent and long-lasting performance. What's Included: FP300 Multi-Sensor × 1, Sticker × 1, User Manual × 1
  • [Wire-Free & Flexible Installation] Completely wireless with a multi-axis adjustable mount for easy wall, ceiling, or corner setup. No wiring required—relocate anytime for optimal detection and coverage. Featuring a 120° field of view and up to 6 m (20 ft) of detection range, the FP300 can effectively monitor various room layouts. Its minimalist design blends seamlessly into any modern interior, delivering powerful functionality without visual clutter.
  1. 60GHz mmWave presence detection: Designed to detect a person who remains still.
  2. PIR motion detection: Detects movement using a conventional passive-infrared sensor.
  3. Illuminance: Measures ambient light for brightness-aware automations.
  4. Temperature: Provides local room-temperature readings.
  5. Humidity: Provides relative-humidity readings.

Motion and presence are not the same thing. A PIR sensor may stop detecting someone who is quietly reading, watching television or working at a desk. MmWave presence sensing is intended to keep reporting occupancy in those situations, while PIR handles movement. Aqara also says its algorithms adapt to the environment and help filter interference; that is a manufacturer claim, not independent proof that false detections are eliminated.

Specifications and mounting information are available on Aqara’s official FP300 page.

Coverage and placement

The FP300 has a stated 120-degree field of view and a maximum detection range of 6 metres. That maximum is not a guarantee of reliable coverage across a six-metre room. Furniture, walls, mounting height, viewing angle and the person’s position all affect performance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Aqara recommends a 45-degree corner installation to improve coverage and reduce blind spots. The rotating base supports wall, ceiling and corner mounting, with magnetic mounting possible on suitable surfaces. Avoid placing it behind furniture, directly at moving curtains or plants, or where it looks through an opening into an adjacent area.

For a desk, sofa or bedroom, aim the sensor at the area where people actually sit or lie. A doorway-facing installation may detect movement effectively but may be less suitable when the goal is to maintain occupancy while someone remains still.

Published specifications

  • Dimensions: 42 × 42 × 50 mm
  • Power: two replaceable CR2450 batteries
  • Operating temperature: -10°C to 50°C
  • Operating humidity: 0–95% RH, non-condensing
  • Maximum stated detection range: 6 m
  • Field of view: 120°

The humidity rating is an operating specification, not an outdoor or weatherproof rating.

Thread/Matter versus Zigbee

Choose Thread/Matter when you want fewer proprietary dependencies

Thread/Matter mode is the better fit if you already have a compatible Matter controller and Thread border router and want to connect the FP300 directly to a supported smart-home platform. Aqara lists Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings, Home Assistant and Homey among the supported platforms.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This does not mean every platform exposes every FP300 feature identically. Presence, motion, illuminance, temperature, humidity and configuration controls may vary by ecosystem, controller and software version. Confirm what your chosen platform exposes before buying.

Aqara Presence Sensor FP2 Bracket Set, mmWave Radar Wired Motion Sensor | Zone Positioning, Multi-Person & Fall Detection, Supports HomeKit, Alexa, and Home Assistant, 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi Required
  • [Installation Method] With the new installation method for the FP2, you can now mount it in the corner of a room. Just attach the included angle mount and switch to the corresponding mode in the app. This setting eliminates dead zones caused by the sensor’s angle and rotates the room layout by 45 degrees, allowing for enhanced zone detection and more automation options.
  • [Multi-Person &Zone Positioning] The Aqara Presence Sensor FP2 can simultaneously detect up to 5 people and trigger different scenarios and automation. Moreover, the FP2(2.4GHz Wi-Fi REQUIRED) offers significant advantages over PIR infrared motion sensors by using a single radar sensor to monitor rooms of up to 40 m² (430 sq ft). You can also divide it into up to 30 zones, such as sofa, bed or desktop, etc. and set up individual automations for each zone. It is like having several PIR sensors at the same time with one Presence Sensor FP2. Please note: the FP2 is a wired sensor that should be constantly powered.
  • [Sleep monitoring& Fall Detection] You can install FP2 next to the bed and select the sleep monitoring mode to sense the human body's sleep status in real time and generate a sleep health report. Moreover, you also can mount the FP2 on the ceiling and choose the Falling Detection Mode, which will detect and alert you through the app if someone falls. (Note: The FP2 is not a medical device, and can only be used for notification purposes)
  • [Multi-Ecosystem Support] The Aqara Presence Sensor FP2 is exposed as multiple sensors to HomeKit, Alexa, Samsung SmartThings and Home Assistant. (Note: The device can be added directly to Home Assistant using HomeKit Controller integration) You can integrate the sensor easily without requiring an Aqara hub, which is a great solution for smart home enthusiasts. For a stable connection, ensure the sensor is placed within 6 meters (19 feet) of your router.
  • [Ultra-High Precision, Privacy, and Enhanced Features]By implementing millimeter-wave radar technology, the Presence Sensor FP2 provides precise detection of movement without false negatives, even for slight movements. No camera monitoring system maximizes privacy. With IPX5, it can be installed in wet environments. Additionally, it has a built-in light sensor for flexible lighting automations (Only available in Aqara Home, HomeKit, and IFTTT). Automations of FP2 are executed without sending to the cloud and will keep working even if there is no internet connection.

Choose Zigbee when you want Aqara Home’s deeper controls

Zigbee mode requires a compatible Aqara Zigbee hub, but Aqara says it unlocks additional Aqara Home options. These can include detection and reporting controls, absence-delay settings, detection-range adjustments and the ability to disable unused sensors to save battery. The sensor can also reach third-party platforms through an Aqara hub’s Matter bridge.

The FP300 is not a fully independent Zigbee and Thread device operating in both modes at once. Treat the protocol choice as part of setup. If you later migrate modes, follow the current FP300 manual for the reset and re-pairing procedure rather than relying on generic Matter or Zigbee instructions.

Battery life: attractive, but not guaranteed

Aqara claims up to three years in Zigbee mode and up to two years in Thread mode. Those are laboratory estimates, not guaranteed household results. Aqara’s stated test profile includes approximately 240 daily data points, four hours of daily presence and the light, temperature and humidity sensors enabled.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Actual battery life can change with protocol, reporting frequency, detection range, occupancy hours, network quality, firmware behaviour and temperature. MmWave sensing is also more demanding than simple PIR motion detection. More frequent reporting may improve responsiveness while shortening battery life.

Zigbee users have more battery-optimisation controls through Aqara Home, including the ability to reduce reporting or disable unused environmental sensors. Thread/Matter buyers should assume that convenience and interoperability may come with fewer device-level controls.

Useful automations

The FP300 is most valuable when its sensing functions are combined rather than used independently.

1. Occupancy-aware lighting

Turn lights on only when presence is detected and ambient light is below a threshold. Aqara gives 400 lux as an example; treat that as a starting point, since the right threshold depends on the room and the type of lighting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Lights that stay on while someone is still

Use presence rather than motion as the occupancy condition. This addresses the familiar problem of lights switching off while someone reads, watches television or works quietly.

Note that the human sensor is not waterproof or moisture-proof, so ensure it’s installed in a dry area for long-term durability

3. Climate control

Use presence together with temperature to adjust heating or cooling only when a room is occupied. Aqara gives 28°C as an illustrative cooling threshold, not a universal recommendation.

4. Humidity alerts

Humidity readings can trigger ventilation or an alert when a room becomes too damp. For critical moisture control, compare the FP300 with a reference sensor and account for placement near windows, vents, exterior walls and ceilings.

5. Room-occupied scenes

A single presence state can trigger a room scene without relying on a door contact. This is useful in offices, bedrooms, living rooms and desk areas where people may enter without opening a monitored door.

How reliable is presence detection?

The FP300 is designed to improve on the limitations of PIR, but performance remains room-dependent. A sensible installation should account for:

  • A person sitting motionless at a desk
  • Someone reading on a sofa
  • A person lying in bed or partly hidden by furniture
  • Multiple people entering and leaving
  • Pets moving around the room
  • Fans, curtains, plants and HVAC airflow
  • People near the edge of the detection area
  • Presence viewed through a doorway or opening

Do not assume the device eliminates false positives or false negatives. Moving objects, unusual room geometry, pets and adjacent spaces may produce unwanted detections, while furniture or edge-of-range positions may produce missed detections. The time taken to clear presence is also important: absence is normally governed by a delay rather than being immediate.

For a critical automation, combine presence with another condition—such as illuminance, a door state or a time delay—instead of using one sensor state as an absolute security signal.

Temperature and humidity: useful automation inputs, not laboratory instruments

The FP300 includes temperature and humidity sensing, but the official specifications do not establish accuracy tolerances. Treat the readings as useful local inputs unless you have compared them with a known reference.

Installation and package variants

The FP300 can be mounted flat on a wall, on a ceiling, in a 45-degree corner or magnetically where the surface is suitable. Depending on the sales channel, Aqara lists at least two package variants:

  • PS-S04E: sensor and sticker
  • PS-S04D: sensor, sticker, metal plate and screw kit

Package contents vary, so check the specific listing before purchasing. Adhesive placement is convenient, but a screw-and-plate installation may be preferable where repositioning is likely or the sensor must stay securely aligned.

What the FP300 does not replace

The five-in-one label is useful, but it can also be misleading. The FP300 does not replace:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Door and window contact sensors
  • Water-leak sensors
  • Smoke or carbon-monoxide alarms
  • Air-quality or CO₂ sensors
  • Security cameras
  • Multi-zone systems that identify exact person locations
  • A low-power PIR sensor where simple movement detection is sufficient
  • A wired mmWave sensor for continuous, high-frequency monitoring

It is an occupancy and environmental sensor—not a complete safety, security or indoor-air-quality system.

FP300 versus the alternatives

Need Better choice Why
Battery-powered presence plus climate sensing FP300 Combines mmWave, PIR, light, temperature and humidity
Basic Aqara presence detection FP1E Focuses on mmWave presence; observed US price was $49.99
Multi-zone or advanced room mapping FP2 Wired USB-C design with more advanced presence features; observed US price was $82.99
Simple movement automations Conventional PIR Usually simpler and more battery-efficient
Always-on, high-frequency presence Wired mmWave sensor Avoids battery-maintenance constraints

The FP1E may make more sense if you want presence but do not need light, temperature or humidity. The FP2 is a better fit for large rooms and location-aware automations when running a USB cable is acceptable. A conventional PIR remains the sensible choice for hallways, entrances and basic “movement happened” triggers.

Who should buy the FP300?

  • Buy it if you want a wireless presence sensor for a desk, bedroom, office, living room or similar space.
  • Buy it if you want light, temperature and humidity readings without installing separate devices.
  • Buy it if you already have an Aqara hub or compatible Thread/Matter infrastructure.
  • Reconsider it if you need precise multi-zone tracking, outdoor use or weatherproofing.
  • Reconsider it if battery replacement is difficult at the installation location.
  • Reconsider it if you expect every feature to appear identically in every smart-home platform.

Final verdict

For one room, the Aqara FP300 could plausibly replace separate motion, presence, light, temperature and humidity sensors. For an entire smart home, it cannot be the only sensor you need.

Its strongest case is a battery-powered room sensor that keeps lighting and climate automations aware of people who are not moving. Choose Thread/Matter if you have the required infrastructure and want direct third-party integration. Choose Zigbee if you have an Aqara hub and value deeper configuration and battery controls.
