Prepare for an appliance delivery by proving three things before the truck arrives: the appliance fits its final opening, the entire route is passable, and the required utilities and service conditions are ready. Measure the opening and every doorway, hall, stair, and turn; read the exact model’s installation instructions; clear the route; prepare any appliance being removed; confirm what the delivery service includes; and arrange building or property access. On delivery day, inspect the appliance and verify operation before signing off.

Start with the space and the route

A new refrigerator can fit the cabinet opening and still be impossible to bring indoors. The same problem occurs with ranges, laundry appliances, and dishwashers when a doorway, stair landing, elevator, or tight corner is narrower than the packaged or unpackaged unit. Measure both the destination and the path from the unloading point to the final position.

Measure the final opening

Use a tape measure and record the available height, width, and depth. Measure at several points rather than assuming walls, cabinets, or floors are perfectly square. Note baseboards, trim, countertops, raised thresholds, adjacent cabinets, and any obstruction that reduces the usable opening. Compare your measurements with the exact model’s published dimensions, not with a similar appliance’s listing.

Depth needs special attention. A cabinet depth may describe the box only, while doors, handles, controls, rear connections, and required air space add to the installed depth. Write down the depth with the doors and handles included when the manufacturer provides that figure, then check how far the unit may project beyond surrounding cabinetry.

CRAFTSMAN 25-Ft Tape Measure with Fraction Marketing, Retractable, Manual-Locking Blade (CMHT37443S)
  • 13 ft. Of reach*: allows for easy measurements when working alone (*based on maximum extension of average professional user)
  • Compact size: easy to grip and store in any tool belt
  • Easy grip design: extensive rubber overmold provides a comfortable grip and impact resistance
  • Easy read fractions: fractions printed on the blade in alternating colors and heights for quick, easy measurements
  • Includes: (1) CMHT37443S Tape Measure

Measure every part of the delivery path

Measure the clear width and height of the front door, interior doors, hallways, stairwells, elevator doors, and any narrow passage. Measure the height and width of tight turns, not just straight sections. Check ceiling height where the appliance must be tilted and note railings, light fixtures, sprinkler heads, low beams, and wall corners. If the appliance will be carried through a gate or shared building entrance, measure that opening too.

Ask the provider whether measurements should be taken with the appliance boxed, on its delivery dolly, or unboxed. Packaging can be wider or taller than the appliance itself. Do not remove doors, railings, or trim on your own unless a qualified professional and the delivery company have agreed to that plan; altering the route can create property damage and may fall outside the crew’s service.

Make a measurement record

Location What to record Why it matters
Final opening Height, width, depth, nearby obstructions Confirms the model can be positioned and ventilated as required
Exterior entrance Clear opening and threshold height Determines whether the appliance can enter the property
Interior doors and halls Clear width, height, and available turning space Identifies pinch points after the entrance
Stairs and elevator Door dimensions, landing space, ceiling clearance, elevator rules Reveals vertical and turning limitations
Final approach Obstructions, floor protection needs, and space to level the appliance Allows safe placement and connection

If any measurement is close to the model’s dimension, send the measurements to the seller or delivery provider before the appointment. A crew may be unable to proceed if the route is unsafe even when the appliance technically could pass.

Use the exact model’s clearance and installation instructions

Manufacturer specifications govern ventilation, rear and side clearances, door swing, leveling space, hose routing, cord placement, and access for future service. A broad internet checklist cannot replace the owner’s manual or installation guide for your model. Download the current instructions using the model number shown on your order and compare every required clearance with the opening you measured.

Check clearances beyond the cabinet cutout

  • Leave the manufacturer’s specified air space around and behind the appliance.
  • Confirm that doors and drawers can open without striking a wall, island, cabinet, or another appliance.
  • Allow room for water lines, drain hoses, gas connectors, power cords, and vent ducts to bend without kinking.
  • Verify that the appliance can be leveled and that leveling feet remain accessible during installation.
  • Keep the required service space so a technician can reach shutoffs and connections later.

Examples in a general guide, including spacing around some laundry configurations or refrigerators, apply only to the configurations described there. Do not transfer one model’s clearance number to another model, size, fuel type, or installation arrangement.

  • 20% more compact grip**: For improved ergonomics and control
  • Integrated finger brake: For improved blade control
  • Fractional blade graphics for quick and easy measuring
  • Durable blade coating for longer blade life

Clear the route and coordinate access

Remove furniture, rugs that could slip, decorations, boxes, and personal items from the route. Protect fragile flooring according to the provider’s instructions, but do not create a ramp or covering that makes the path unstable. Keep children and pets away from the work area. Make sure an adult who can authorize placement and service decisions is present if the provider requires one.

Resolve property access before the appointment

For a house, confirm where the truck may park and whether a gate must be unlocked. For an apartment, condominium, or managed building, reserve the loading zone or elevator, notify the building manager, and check move-in hours and elevator padding rules. Tell the provider about long driveways, steep approaches, gravel, narrow lanes, security gates, stairs, or other unusual conditions. An appointment slot does not automatically mean the crew has permission to enter a controlled-access property.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep the order confirmation and the provider’s contact information available. Verify the delivery date, expected arrival window, access instructions, and a phone number the crew can use. If construction, painting, or flooring work is underway, provide a clean, stable route and tell the crew about areas that must not be touched.

Prepare the old appliance for relocation or haul-away

If the existing appliance is being moved, returned, or hauled away, empty it before the crew arrives. Remove food, dishes, clothing, racks, shelves, and loose accessories. Secure or remove parts that can slide during transport.

Confirm who disconnects what

Read the order’s removal and haul-away terms. Some services require the owner to disconnect the old appliance before arrival; others include disconnection only when the existing connection meets their conditions. Ask specifically whether the crew will disconnect water, gas, electrical, drain, or vent connections and whether a licensed trade is required. Never disconnect a gas line or alter electrical wiring unless you are qualified and local rules allow it.

Amazon Basics Retractable Tape Measure with Metric and SAE Measurements, 16 ft / 192 in, Turquoise

  • Provides both SAE and metric measurements
  • Wide 3/4-inch blade with easy readability
  • Convenient belt clip and lanyard for easy access
  • Molded, impact-resistant case with easy grip-ability

For a washer, follow the provider’s instructions for emptying the drum and removing standing water. Close water shutoffs and keep hoses accessible if the service requires owner disconnection. For a refrigerator, remove food and confirm how the water or ice connection will be handled. Do not assume the crew will remove an appliance that is still full, hard-plumbed, unsafe to access, or excluded by the order.

Verify utilities and the installation site

Installation depends on the exact appliance, the existing setup, the delivery company’s checklist, and local code. Before delivery, inspect the utility points and compare them with the model manual. A missing or noncompliant outlet, shutoff, vent, drain, or opening can cause the crew to leave the appliance unconnected or refuse installation.

Utility checks by appliance type

Appliance Checks to make before delivery
Refrigerator Confirm the required outlet, rear and side clearance, and a compatible nearby water shutoff and water connection for models with a dispenser or ice maker. Check the model’s permitted connection distance and routing.
Dishwasher Check the cabinet cutout, water shutoff, drain path, and electrical connection. Verify that the existing opening and connections satisfy the provider’s installation requirements.
Washer Check hot and cold water connections, accessible shutoffs, the required outlet, drain arrangement, floor space, and clearance for hoses and leveling.
Dryer Verify the exact electrical or gas configuration, outlet or gas connection, approved vent route, exterior termination, and any safety hardware specified by the model instructions.
Range or cooktop Confirm whether the model is gas, electric, or another configuration; check the matching outlet or gas shutoff, ventilation, opening dimensions, and required anti-tip or other safety hardware.

These are preparation categories, not universal specifications. The owner’s manual and the provider’s current checklist determine the acceptable voltage, connector, hose, vent, drain, shutoff position, and clearance for your appliance. Local building, electrical, plumbing, and gas rules may impose additional requirements.

Ask about parts and reuse of existing connections

Before delivery, ask whether the order includes connection hoses, a power cord, a vent kit, a water line, brackets, or other installation parts. Confirm whether existing hoses or lines may be reused. Compatibility, age, condition, and local rules can make replacement mandatory. Do not buy a generic kit until you know the model and service requirements; the wrong connector can delay installation or create a safety problem.

Confirm exactly what the delivery service includes

Read the service description attached to your order and ask for clarification in writing. Scope varies by appliance, provider, location, and local licensing rules. Confirm each item rather than relying on the word “installation.”

CRAFTSMAN 25-Ft Tape Measure with Fraction Markings, Retractable, Self-Locking Blade (CMHT37225)
  • QUICK & EASY MEASUREMENTS: Fractions printed on the blade
  • ADDED GRIP: Rubber overmold for added grip
  • Is the appliance carried to the room or only delivered to the entrance?
  • Is unpacking included, and will the crew remove packaging?
  • Will the old appliance be disconnected, moved, or hauled away?
  • Which connection parts are supplied, and which must be present before arrival?
  • Will the crew level the appliance, test it, and explain basic operation?
  • What plumbing, electrical, gas, carpentry, cabinetry, flooring, venting, or structural work is excluded?
  • What happens if the route, opening, utility, or local code does not meet the requirements?

GE Appliances states in its delivery and installation guidance: “Delivery agents are not authorized to perform carpentry, plumbing or electrical work.” That limitation illustrates why the site must be ready. If an outlet, shutoff, vent, drain, cabinet opening, or gas connection needs modification, arrange the appropriate qualified contractor before the delivery appointment.

Use a practical day-before checklist

  1. Recheck the final opening and the complete delivery route against the model dimensions and clearance instructions.
  2. Remove furniture, fragile items, rugs that obstruct movement, and anything stored around the installation area.
  3. Arrange gate, parking, elevator, loading-zone, and building access, and confirm the arrival window.
  4. Empty the old appliance and complete only the disconnection steps the provider assigns to the owner.
  5. Locate the required outlets, shutoffs, drain, vent, and connection points; make sure they are accessible.
  6. Confirm included parts, haul-away, testing, packaging removal, and exclusions with the provider.
  7. Secure pets and arrange for an adult to be present if required.

Inspect the work on delivery day

Before the crew leaves, inspect the appliance under good lighting. Look at doors, panels, handles, corners, controls, feet, and visible tubing for dents, scratches, cracks, or other damage. Compare the model and finish with your order. Photograph any issue immediately and follow the provider’s reporting process; do not wait until packaging has been discarded if the service requires same-day notification.

Check that the appliance is positioned where agreed, sits level, and has the clearances specified by the manufacturer. Confirm that doors, drawers, and adjacent cabinets operate freely. If installation was purchased, verify the connections, that shutoffs and cords are accessible, and that the crew completed the promised basic test. For a refrigerator, dishwasher, washer, dryer, or range, the exact test depends on the model and service scope; ask the crew to identify any function they could not test and why.

Do not sign a damage-free or completed-service acknowledgment until you have inspected the unit and understand any exception noted by the crew. If the crew cannot complete installation because a requirement is missing, ask for the specific deficiency in writing, photograph the site if useful, and contact the seller or provider promptly about the next step. Arrange qualified plumbing, electrical, gas, carpentry, or vent work as applicable rather than improvising a connection.

What can prevent completion, and how to recover

The appliance will not fit the route

Stop the move and remeasure the tight point, including packaging and turning clearance. Ask the provider whether an approved unboxing or alternate route is possible. If doors, railings, or trim would need removal, obtain agreement from the responsible professional and the delivery company before changing anything.

The opening is too small or lacks required clearance

Do not force the appliance into the space. Compare the model installation diagram with the opening and ask the seller whether the appliance, opening, or surrounding cabinetry must change. A unit that can be squeezed into place may overheat, fail to open correctly, or become impossible to service.

A utility or connection is missing

Ask the crew to identify the exact missing outlet, shutoff, drain, vent, connector, or safety device. Have the appropriate qualified trade correct the condition, then reschedule installation under the provider’s terms. Do not assume an adapter or extension cord is an acceptable substitute.

Removal or haul-away is declined

Review the order’s exclusions and the old appliance’s condition. If owner disconnection, emptying, or access was required, complete those steps only when safe and permitted. Otherwise arrange a separate licensed or authorized removal service and keep the new appliance protected until the old unit is cleared.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom line for a smooth installation

The reliable preparation sequence is: measure the destination, measure the entire route, follow the exact model instructions, clear and coordinate access, prepare the old appliance under the service terms, verify every utility and supplied part, and inspect the completed delivery before signing off. Delivery crews can install only when the route, opening, connections, and service scope meet the stated requirements.
