But that launch announcement does not prove current stock, pricing, installer coverage, or certification in every market. The X1 is most attractive when you want modular capacity and an alternative to Tesla. Powerwall 3 remains the stronger fit when high output, an integrated solar inverter, and Tesla’s documented installation ecosystem matter more.
Before signing a contract, obtain an itemized local quote and confirm the battery’s usable capacity, output, backup equipment, solar compatibility, warranty service, and utility approval.

What was actually announced?
The original news was an April 2024 launch announcement: Anker said its SOLIX X1 home energy-storage system was available to purchase in the United States, Mexico, and Canada. That is different from saying the product is currently in stock, available for immediate homeowner checkout, or supported by a qualified installer in every location.
The sales path may involve direct ordering, a quote request, or an installer-mediated purchase. Confirm the current process for your region before treating “available to buy” as an immediate installation option. Historical launch coverage is available here.

The X1 is a modular residential energy-storage system—not a portable power station. Historical comparison coverage describes stackable battery modules, LFP chemistry, capacity from approximately 5 kWh to 30 kWh in roughly 5-kWh increments, and about 6 kW of continuous output per power module. Those figures should be checked against the current regional Anker datasheet because model revisions, inverter configurations, and market specifications can differ.
In practical terms, adding battery capacity can extend runtime, but it does not automatically provide proportionally more power. A small system may run refrigeration, lighting, internet equipment, and selected outlets while still being unable to start a central air conditioner, well pump, or other large motor load.

- Start closer to your actual needs. A household with modest consumption may prefer a smaller initial system instead of paying for unused storage.
- Expand later. Capacity can potentially grow as electricity use, solar production, electric-vehicle charging, or backup expectations increase. Expansion limits, firmware requirements, wiring, and certification still apply.
- Use a non-Tesla ecosystem. This may matter if you do not want Tesla hardware, software, service, or installer arrangements.
- Fit a constrained installation. Stackable equipment may offer useful layout flexibility, although physical flexibility does not eliminate electrical-code requirements.
Do not assume modularity guarantees a lower total price. A smaller battery can be less expensive, but added inverters, gateways, labor, permitting, panel work, and future expansion may change the calculation. Compare complete commissioned systems rather than battery-only prices.
Why Powerwall 3 may still be the better choice
Powerwall 3 has a higher documented single-unit on-grid output—up to 11.5 kW—which may better suit homes with large simultaneous loads. It also combines the battery and solar inverter, includes six MPPT inputs, and has a defined Tesla ordering and certified-installer workflow.

What will each system actually back up?
“Whole-home backup” is not a promise that every appliance can operate indefinitely. The installer must determine which circuits are connected, the system’s continuous and surge output, and how the service panel and transfer equipment are configured.
Essential-loads backup
Essential-loads designs commonly prioritize refrigerators, lighting, internet equipment, security systems, selected receptacles, and sometimes a sump pump. This approach can reduce cost and avoid asking a small battery to start heavy motors.

Whole-home backup
Whole-home backup may include heating and cooling, ranges, water heaters, pumps, and an electric vehicle, but only when the battery, inverter, service equipment, and load-management plan support those demands. A load calculation is essential. A 30-kWh storage figure does not mean every circuit can draw power at any rate, nor does it mean all 30 kWh is available after reserve settings and conversion losses.
Ask specifically:
- What are the continuous and surge output ratings?
- Can the system start the home’s pumps, compressors, HVAC equipment, or other motor loads?
- Which circuits are backed up?
- Can the battery recharge from solar during an outage?
- What reserve percentage is held back?
- Does the system support grid-forming operation and islanding?
- Which gateway, transfer switch, or load-management equipment is included?
For Powerwall 3, Tesla lists Backup Gateway 2, Backup Switch, and Gateway 3 as supported islanding devices. The required equipment depends on the installation design and local rules.
Installation and solar compatibility
A grid-connected battery is not a do-it-yourself appliance. Installation normally requires qualified electrical work, permits, utility coordination, commissioning, and compliance with the authority having jurisdiction. A stackable design may simplify physical expansion, but it does not remove those obligations.
Before comparing quotes, identify:
- Whether your existing solar inverter is AC-coupled or DC-coupled.
- Whether the X1 can replace or coexist with that inverter.
- The battery and inverter’s maximum PV input and MPPT arrangement.
- Your main-service rating and available breaker capacity.
- Indoor, outdoor, clearance, wall, floor, temperature, and flood-zone requirements.
- Whether your utility requires equipment listing, interconnection approval, or a specific certified installer.
- Whether future battery modules must match the original generation, inverter, and firmware.
An AC-coupled retrofit may work with existing solar equipment but can add hardware, conversion steps, and losses. A DC-coupled design can be more integrated but may require greater changes to the solar architecture. The correct answer depends on the equipment already installed.

Your written quote should separate:
- Battery modules and inverter equipment.
- Backup gateway, transfer switch, and controls.
- Installation labor and commissioning.
- Permits and utility fees.
- Electrical-panel or service upgrades.
- Solar-inverter replacement or additional coupling equipment.
- Monitoring, service, and warranty labor.
- Applicable rebates, tax credits, and virtual-power-plant payments.
There is no universal national incentive that makes either system automatically eligible everywhere. Eligibility depends on location, installation date, equipment certification, ownership structure, and program rules. Utility programs can materially change the result. For example, Tesla’s GVEC page describes a specific program listing a $5,922.50 upfront incentive for one qualifying Powerwall 3 installed after April 1, 2026, plus possible annual credits. That is a GVEC-specific example, not a nationwide Powerwall rebate. See Tesla’s program page for its conditions.

Service and long-term ownership questions
Anker’s local support arrangements deserve the same attention as the hardware. Before buying, ask:
- Who performs warranty repairs?
- Are replacement modules stocked domestically?
- Can an independent qualified installer service the system?
- Can core backup functions operate during an internet outage?
- Are firmware updates mandatory?
- What happens if the app or cloud service changes?
- How long will replacement parts be supported?
- Which certifications does the proposed model carry for your utility and local authority?
These questions matter for any connected battery, but especially when comparing a newer market entrant with a larger established installer network. Confirm the answers in writing rather than relying on a general product page.
Which system fits your project?
| Choose the SOLIX X1 when… | Choose Powerwall 3 when… |
|---|---|
| You want modular sizing and may expand later. | You need high single-unit output. |
| Your household’s storage requirement is modest or uncertain. | Your design benefits from an integrated solar inverter. |
| A qualified local installer supports the X1. | Tesla-certified installation is more available locally. |
| The X1 is compatible with your existing solar system. | You are designing around Tesla solar hardware. |
| A complete installed X1 quote beats comparable Powerwall quotes. | Your utility program specifically favors Powerwall. |
| You prefer not to depend on Tesla’s ecosystem. | You value Tesla’s published specifications, app, and ordering workflow. |
Neither product is a good fit if the installer cannot explain the backup design, the quote omits required equipment, the system is incompatible with your solar array, or warranty service is unclear.

Questions to ask before signing
- What is the usable—not merely nominal—capacity?
- What are the continuous and surge output ratings for the complete installed system?
- Which circuits are backed up, and is whole-home backup actually included?
- Can the system start the home’s largest motors and compressors?
- What gateway, transfer equipment, panel work, and permits are included?
- Is the quote before or after incentives, and which incentives are confirmed in writing?
- Who handles warranty claims and labor?
- How long will replacement parts and battery modules be available?
- Can the battery perform essential functions without an internet connection?
- What equipment and firmware are required if the system is expanded later?
Bottom line
The Anker SOLIX X1 is a genuine modular home-battery alternative to Tesla Powerwall, and its flexibility may suit homeowners who want to start small, expand later, or avoid Tesla’s ecosystem. However, its historical launch availability should not be mistaken for guaranteed current stock, local installer support, or a universal price.
Powerwall 3 is the more documented choice for high output and integrated solar design. The X1 is the more interesting choice when modular sizing and vendor diversity matter. In either case, choose the system only after comparing like-for-like installed quotes and completing a load, solar-compatibility, permitting, and service review.
