Its fuller sound, 3.5mm audio connection, built-in Zigbee hub and Thread Border Router support make it worthwhile at a clear discount—or for a household that needs those features. At a price close to newer Echo hardware, compare alternatives first.
The spherical Echo was announced in September 2020 and became available on October 22, 2020, with a $99.99 launch price. That historical price explains the strong value judgment in the original review; it should not be treated as a guaranteed 2026 price or recommendation.

What is the Echo (4th Gen)?
The Echo (4th Gen) is Amazon’s full-size, spherical smart speaker. It sits above the smaller Echo Dot and Echo Pop, and below the more music-focused Echo Studio. It is not the same product as the Echo Dot (4th Gen), even though both use a rounded design.
Historical color options included Charcoal, Glacier White and Twilight Blue. The fabric-covered upper section and rounded body replaced the older cylindrical Echo design, giving the speaker a softer appearance on a shelf, desk or kitchen counter.

Price and availability matter more in 2026
The Echo (4th Gen) launched at $99.99. That figure is useful historical context, not a current price. Availability, condition and seller can vary, so check the live U.S. listing on Amazon’s Echo page before buying. Confirm whether the unit is new, refurbished or sold by a third party, and check the warranty and return terms.
If a newer full-size Echo is available for a similar amount, its newer hardware and potentially longer support horizon may be the better purchase. If the 4th Gen is substantially discounted, its sound and smart-home radios make it more compelling than a basic Dot.
Design and placement
The spherical design is attractive and practical, although it is not entirely direction-independent. The Echo has two front-firing 0.8-inch tweeters, so it is best aimed generally toward the listening area rather than placed where its front points into a wall.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsA 3-inch woofer sits inside the enclosure, while the rubberized base helps keep the speaker from sliding. The top has volume-up, volume-down, action and microphone-mute controls. A light ring around the base indicates status, but check that it is visible from your usual listening position.
The rear includes the power connection and a 3.5mm audio port, which can be used for wired audio input or output. The underside also includes a 1/4-inch threaded mounting point. Keep the speaker in the open rather than inside a cabinet, and avoid placing it directly beside a wall or a noisy appliance if you want reliable voice recognition.
Sound quality: a meaningful step above a Dot
The Echo (4th Gen) is a better choice than a small Echo Dot for listeners who care about music, podcasts and spoken-word clarity. Its larger woofer provides fuller bass and more headroom, making it better suited to a kitchen, bedroom, office or small living room.

- Meet Echo Dot Max: Experience rich room-filling sound that automatically adapts to your space and fine-tunes playback. Features a built-in smart home hub and Omnisense technology for highly personalized experiences.
- Music to your ears: With nearly 3x the bass versus Echo Dot (2022 release), it fits beautifully in any space, delivering your personal sound stage with deep bass and enhanced clarity. Listen to streaming services, such as Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify, and SiriusXM. Encore!
- Do more with device pairing: Connect compatible Echo smart speakers and smart displays in different rooms, or pair with a second Echo Dot Max to enjoy even richer sound
- Simple smart home control: Set routines, pair and control lights, locks, and thousands of smart home devices that work with Alexa without needing a separate smart home hub. With Omnisense technology, you can activate routines via temperature or presence detection.
- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot Max doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
The tuning is relatively bass-forward, which can make everyday music more enjoyable but may not suit listeners who prefer a neutral presentation. It is still a single compact smart speaker, not an audiophile system: it will not provide the separation and stereo imaging of a proper stereo pair or the refinement of a larger music-focused speaker.

The original reviewer judged the Echo’s sound very favorably against more expensive options, while also describing Sonos sound as more refined. That is a subjective comparison rather than a universal measurement; the practical conclusion is simpler: the Echo is strong for casual and moderate-volume listening, while the Echo Studio or a Sonos Era 100 is more appropriate for music-first buyers.
Alexa and everyday use
Alexa handles timers, alarms, reminders, weather, news, questions, routines, music playback and smart-home commands. Setup and device management take place in the Alexa app, and the far-field microphones allow hands-free control when the microphones are enabled.
Supported services can include Amazon Music, Spotify and Apple Music, subject to account, subscription and regional requirements. The Echo can also work as a Bluetooth speaker, and compatible Echo devices can be combined for multi-room audio or stereo playback.
Alexa is not a fully offline assistant. Amazon describes Alexa-enabled speakers as internet-connected devices that use cloud-based Alexa services, so core assistant features depend on a working network and Amazon’s service availability. Software features can also change over time, and a 2020 device should not be assumed to receive every capability introduced for newer hardware.

Smart-home capabilities
Zigbee
The Echo (4th Gen)’s most distinctive practical advantage is its built-in Zigbee smart-home hub. Amazon’s current documentation lists the model as supporting Zigbee devices such as compatible lights, locks, plugs and switches.

For a compatible device, direct connection to the Echo may eliminate the need for a separate Zigbee hub. You can begin discovery by saying, “Alexa, discover my devices.” Compatibility is not universal, however. Check the individual product’s requirements: “Works with Alexa” may describe a Wi-Fi connection, Bluetooth, Matter, a manufacturer’s cloud skill or a proprietary bridge rather than direct Zigbee pairing.
Thread and Matter
Amazon’s current Thread documentation lists the Echo (4th Gen) as a Thread 1.1 Border Router. That is useful for supported Thread-based smart-home setups, but it does not make the speaker a universal controller for every smart-home product.
Matter support depends on the device category, connection method and current software. Before buying, confirm whether the product uses Matter over Wi-Fi or Matter over Thread, whether Alexa supports that category, and whether the required setup code or QR code is available.
Zigbee, Thread, Matter, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and Alexa skills are different technologies. The Echo should not automatically replace every bridge or controller used by Home Assistant, SmartThings, Hubitat or Apple Home. Inventory the protocols used by your existing devices first.
eero Built-in
The original review reported that eero Built-in could let the Echo function as a Wi-Fi extender for compatible eero networks, with Amazon’s cited maximums of up to 1,000 square feet of additional coverage and speeds up to 100 Mbps. This is relevant only to supported eero systems and software. It is not a universal Wi-Fi extender, and the maximum figures are not guaranteed results. Verify current compatibility on eero’s site before treating this as a buying reason.
Privacy controls and cloud dependence
A physical microphone-mute button is a meaningful privacy control. When enabled, the microphones should not respond to the wake word until they are switched back on. You can also review Alexa privacy settings, manage voice history and delete voice requests through Amazon’s Alexa Privacy Settings or the Alexa app.

That does not make the Echo an offline or completely private assistant. Wake-word processing and other device-side functions are distinct from the audio sent to Amazon for processing after Alexa is activated. Review connected third-party services and account permissions as well as voice-history settings.
Recommended Free Tools
The original review described ultrasound-based motion detection as using sound emitted by the device and said captured audio was not uploaded to the cloud. That feature-specific statement should not be generalized to all Echo processing or interpreted as a promise that Alexa never sends voice audio to Amazon.
Main drawbacks
- It is aging hardware. The model launched in 2020. It may remain useful, but Amazon controls future software and service support.
- Alexa creates ecosystem dependence. Routines, accounts and compatible devices are easiest to manage when a household already uses Amazon services.
- It is not a high-end music system. The larger enclosure improves the experience over a Dot, but it cannot replace an Echo Studio, Sonos system or conventional stereo.
- Smart-home terminology is easy to misread. Direct Zigbee or Thread capability does not mean every “Works with Alexa” product will connect without a bridge or cloud account.
- Current value is uncertain without a live price. A launch-era $99.99 recommendation is not enough to justify paying near-new-generation pricing in 2026.
Who should buy it?
- An Alexa household wanting fuller sound than an Echo Dot or Echo Pop.
- Someone with compatible Zigbee devices who wants a speaker with an integrated hub.
- A buyer who needs a 3.5mm audio connection.
- An eero owner who has verified current eero Built-in compatibility.
- A shopper who finds the Echo (4th Gen) meaningfully cheaper than newer full-size alternatives.
Who should skip it?
- People whose homes are centered on Google Assistant or Apple Home.
- Listeners seeking the best detail, stereo separation or room-filling music.
- Buyers paying roughly the same price as newer Alexa hardware.
- Anyone prioritizing the longest possible support horizon.
- People who only need timers, alarms and occasional voice commands; an Echo Dot or Pop may be sufficient.
Alternatives to consider
Echo Dot or Echo Pop: Better for inexpensive Alexa access, bedside use and basic routines, but with less bass and headroom. They are not substitutes for the Echo (4th Gen)’s integrated Zigbee capability.
Echo Studio: The more appropriate Amazon option for buyers who prioritize music, output and detail over compact size and price.
Sonos Era 100: A stronger fit for a music-first, multi-room audio system, but typically less compelling for buyers who mainly want Alexa routines or a built-in Zigbee hub. See the official product page.
Google’s Nest Audio line: A better ecosystem fit for Google-account households. Check the current Google speaker lineup and availability rather than assuming the older Nest Audio is the newest option.

Setup and troubleshooting
If setup fails
- Update the Alexa app and confirm your phone is on the intended home Wi-Fi.
- Place the Echo near the router during setup.
- Unplug and reconnect the speaker.
- Retry registration in the Alexa app and check that a secondhand unit has been deregistered from its previous Amazon account.
- Test another phone or a hotspot only as a diagnostic step.
Wi-Fi passwords, band-steering behavior, router security settings and an outdated app can all interfere with setup. Use Amazon’s current support instructions for the exact reset procedure rather than relying on an improvised button sequence.
If a Zigbee device will not pair
Confirm that the product actually contains a compatible Zigbee radio and does not require its own bridge. Remove it from another hub if necessary, reduce distance and interference, then try “Alexa, discover my devices.”

Check whether the Echo supports the device’s Matter connection type, whether Alexa supports that product category, and whether the Alexa app, Echo firmware and device firmware are current. Confirm that the device has not already been commissioned elsewhere and keep its QR or setup code available.
If voice commands fail
Check the physical mute button, network connection, Alexa service status, account or subscription requirements and regional availability. Move the Echo out of a cabinet and away from loud equipment. Music played at high volume can also make wake-word recognition less reliable.
