The Alexa bartender table was real, but it was not an Amazon appliance. The project was a one-off DIY creation associated with the Audax YouTube channel and reported by Gizmodo on November 11, 2022. It combined Alexa voice control, an Arduino Mega 2560, pumps, servos, and a 3D-printed glass elevator inside a side-table enclosure.
Ask for one of four programmed drinks and the machine could activate a predefined dispensing sequence. It was an entertaining maker project—not a retail product, a fully autonomous robotic bartender, or a machine capable of inventing cocktails on demand.

What the Alexa cocktail table actually was
The table combined three separate systems:
- Voice interface: Alexa recognized requests for four programmed drinks.
- Dispensing hardware: Pumps moved spirits or other liquids through tubing into a glass.
- Furniture and presentation: A side-table body concealed the electronics and mechanisms, while lighting and a motorized platform created the theatrical effect.
The original coverage does not establish that Amazon designed, manufactured, sold, or endorsed the table. “Alexa-powered” describes the voice-control layer, much as a custom smart-home project might use Alexa to trigger lights or appliances.

How it worked
The project’s architecture can be understood like this:
Spoken drink request
↓
Alexa skill or voice routine
↓
Drink-specific control command
↓
Arduino Mega 2560
↓
Pumps and servos
↓
Liquid dispensing and glass elevator
The reported sequence was broadly as follows:
- The user spoke a request to Alexa.
- Alexa recognized one of the programmed drink options.
- The control system selected the corresponding recipe routine.
- Pumps delivered measured liquids, presumably using preset operating times or control values.
- Servos positioned dispensing hardware; the report says they raised and lowered the nozzles.
- A 3D-printed elevator lowered the glass through the tabletop and later returned it to the surface.
The source describes the glass elevator and dispensing action but does not publish a detailed timing diagram. The exact order of every motor and pump action should therefore be treated as a visual description of the project, not a verified engineering specification.
The hardware inside the table
The specifically identified components included:
- Arduino Mega 2560: Reported as controlling the pumping mechanisms.
- Pumps and tubing: Used to move ingredients from bottles or reservoirs to the glass.
- Servos: Used to move dispensing nozzles or related mechanisms.
- 3D-printed glass elevator: Lowered and raised the drinking glass through the tabletop.
- LED lighting: Added visual impact.
- Side-table enclosure: Hid wiring, bottles, pumps, and mechanical hardware.
The article does not provide pump model numbers, tubing specifications, a wiring diagram, a bill of materials, a software repository, power requirements, or construction drawings. The Arduino Mega 2560 is identified for the pumping system, but that does not prove that every subsystem ran on Arduino.

The Raspberry Pi reference associated with the story needs similar care. Raspberry Pi cocktail machines are part of the broader maker tradition, but the cited report specifically identifies an Arduino Mega 2560 in this featured build. It should not casually be described as an entirely Raspberry Pi-based project.
The moving glass was the real showpiece
Many drink dispensers simply pour into a glass placed beneath a nozzle. This table added a furniture-sized mechanical presentation layer: the glass disappeared below the tabletop, received the drink, and emerged again.
That design made the project more memorable and allowed the pumps, reservoirs, electronics, and mechanisms to remain hidden. It also introduced the normal trade-offs of combining furniture with moving machinery:
- Repair access becomes more difficult.
- The elevator must remain aligned with the tabletop opening.
- Spills can reach electronics hidden below the surface.
- Different glass shapes may not fit the platform reliably.
- The enclosure takes up more space than a conventional countertop dispenser.
What it could—and could not—make
The project reportedly recognized four different drinks. The cited coverage does not identify all four by name, and it does not publish the exact recipes. It is therefore more accurate to call them four programmed drinks rather than claim that the machine had a documented four-cocktail menu.
“Mixes drinks” also describes a narrower process than a human bartender performs. The machine appears to have combined preloaded liquids according to fixed routines. There is no evidence that it could:

Why Alexa control was useful—and limited
Amazon’s Alexa Skills Kit allows developers to create voice experiences, test them, and connect commands to external software or hardware. A custom skill could map a phrase to a named drink routine, while a local controller handled the physical pumps and motors.
That does not mean Alexa directly operated the pump hardware. A likely arrangement would have been:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Alexa recognized a request.
- A skill or connected service translated it into a drink command.
- A controller such as the Arduino received that command.
- The controller ran a predefined mechanical sequence.
The exact invocation phrase, intent names, drink names, and code for Audax’s build are not provided in the cited reporting. They should not be reconstructed as if they were verified facts.
Voice control also creates failure modes. Alexa might misrecognize a drink name, select an unintended routine, or fail to hear the request. A safer design would use distinct drink names, confirmation prompts, a visible status indicator, a maximum pump duration, and a physical emergency-stop button. Amazon’s developer tools include speech-recognition testing and utterance-conflict detection, which could help a modern builder reduce ambiguous commands.
It was semi-automated, not autonomous
The original coverage cautions that the machine was not completely autonomous. A user would still need to load or refill ingredients, provide a clean glass, monitor the process, and handle cleaning.
Likely manual responsibilities include:
- Refilling bottles or reservoirs.
- Adding ice, garnishes, straws, or mixers not built into the machine.
- Cleaning pumps, tubing, nozzles, and the glass platform.
- Checking that the glass is correctly positioned.
- Recovering from a jammed elevator or failed pour.
- Monitoring alcohol access and serving responsibly.
Calling it a “robot bartender” is understandable as a playful description, but it overstates the machine’s capabilities if interpreted technically.

Why the side-table format was clever
The enclosure was not merely decorative. It solved several design problems at once:
Rank #3
- Storage Assistant: 3 drawer design provides plenty of space for sorting and storing various items such as documents, books, cosmetics, and jewelry(all are not included), creating a neat and organized environment.
- Dual Charging Methods: The Smart Bedside Side Table can automatically charge your mobile phone by placing it in the corresponding area, getting rid of the bondage and solving the trouble of finding the charging cable. you can charge them through the USB interfaces with your own USB cable.
- Smart Life: The fingerprint unlock area allows 360° fingerprint recognition to unlock drawers, giving you peace of mind to store your private valuables. audio allows you to quickly connect to your phone's and listen at your leisure, creating your private theatre.
- Tri-colour Ambient Light: The Smart Bedside Side Table lights up with a gentle touch and can be adjusted to white, warm white, or warm yellow, so you can wake up at night without fear of darkness. It ensures smooth, quiet pushing and pulling of drawers.
- Strong Load Bearing Capacity: 4 raised legs, rectangular construction, and sturdy material make this product hold up to 110.23 lbs, so you can rest assured that you can place some daily items.
- It concealed unattractive plumbing and wiring.
- It provided more internal volume than a small countertop enclosure.
- It made the project resemble ordinary home furniture.
- It created a dramatic reveal when the glass rose through the tabletop.
- It turned a functional dispenser into an interactive conversation piece.
The same choice also made the engineering harder. A hidden beverage system must still be accessible for cleaning, leak detection, pump replacement, and calibration. Furniture construction adds weight, alignment, spill management, and ventilation considerations that a simple open-frame prototype might avoid.
Could you build one today?
In principle, yes—but not as a parts-for-parts replica from the available documentation. A modern recreation would need a voice-control layer, a microcontroller, beverage-compatible pumps and tubing, reservoirs or bottles, motorized mechanisms, sensors, a glass platform, and a custom enclosure.
The difficult work would be less about making Alexa recognize “make a drink” and more about making the machine safe, cleanable, repeatable, and resistant to failures.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDesign requirements for a responsible build
- Use a food-safe liquid path. Beverage-contact tubing, pumps, reservoirs, and nozzles should be suitable for the liquids being dispensed.
- Make every wet component removable or flushable. Hidden tubing that cannot be cleaned is a sanitation problem.
- Separate power and liquids. Keep mains wiring and control electronics away from alcohol, leaks, and condensate.
- Add overflow protection. A drip tray, liquid-level monitoring, and pump shutoff can limit damage.
- Detect the glass. A cup-presence sensor and mechanical guide can prevent a pour into an empty or misaligned platform.
- Calibrate each pump. Timed operation alone can vary with tubing length, bottle height, liquid viscosity, air in the line, and pump wear.
- Provide a physical emergency stop. Voice control should never be the only way to stop a motor or pump.
- Plan for cross-contamination. Shared lines can carry allergens, flavors, or alcohol into later drinks.
- Restrict access. Alcohol reservoirs should be inaccessible to children, and the system should not run unattended.
- Build in confirmation. A machine dispensing alcohol should confirm the selected drink before starting the pour.
Amazon describes Alexa-hosted skills as free for almost every skill builder, but that does not make the complete project free. Pumps, sensors, food-safe plumbing, motors, power supplies, fabrication, enclosure materials, and protective hardware still cost money.

Alexa selects the wrong drink
Use clearly differentiated drink names, confirmation prompts, and a physical cancel control. Avoid overlapping utterances and impose a maximum pour time.
A reservoir runs dry
A pump can continue running while moving mostly air, producing an under-strength drink. Level sensors or flow monitoring are preferable to relying only on pump timing. The Audax build’s method for detecting an empty container is not documented.
The glass is missing or misaligned
A moving platform can spill liquid or collide with the table if the glass is absent. Add cup detection, travel limits, guides, and a platform designed for the intended glass dimensions.
The elevator jams
Position sensors, a current limit, a manual release, and an accessible service panel can prevent a jam from damaging the motor or trapping the glass.

Lines become contaminated or clogged
Design for flushing and replacement. Separate incompatible ingredients where practical, use removable nozzles, and do not assume that a hidden tube is clean simply because the exterior looks tidy.
Alcohol reaches the electronics
Use spill containment, drip trays, sealed or protected enclosures where appropriate, and physical separation between wet and electrical sections. The DIY project should not be treated as commercial-grade or certified without evidence of such testing.
Commercial alternatives
No current countertop machine is the same concept as an Alexa-controlled side table with a rising glass. Commercial products are functional alternatives: easier to buy and operate, but generally less customizable and less theatrical.
Bartesian Professional Cocktail Maker
The Bartesian Professional product page lists a price of $399.99 as of August 18, 2026. The manufacturer describes a system with five 1-liter spirit bottles, cocktail capsules, adjustable strength from mocktail to strong, and a mixing process of roughly 30 seconds. Capsules are sold separately.
It is a better fit for someone who wants a ready-to-use countertop appliance than for a maker seeking open-ended recipes, direct Alexa control, or a custom furniture mechanism. Its capsule ecosystem also creates recurring consumable costs.
bev by BLACK+DECKER
bev by BLACK+DECKER is offered in corded and cordless versions and uses Bartesian capsules. BLACK+DECKER says the system supports more than 50 cocktails and mocktails. Users supply the liquor separately; alcohol is not included.
The normal use path is to load liquor bottles, insert a capsule, place a glass, choose a strength setting, and press Mix. The product is a simpler alternative for regular home use, but it does not reproduce the Alexa voice interface, custom Arduino control, furniture enclosure, or moving-glass effect.

The bottom line
The Alexa-powered side table was a real 2022 maker project, not a product made by Amazon. Its appeal came from combining a familiar voice assistant with an Arduino-controlled dispensing system and a theatrical 3D-printed glass elevator hidden inside furniture.
It could prepare a small number of predefined drinks, but it was not a fully autonomous bartender and there is not enough published information to reproduce it exactly. For builders, the project is a useful concept for combining voice interfaces, microcontrollers, pumps, sensors, and custom furniture. For buyers, commercial capsule machines such as Bartesian Professional and bev by BLACK+DECKER are more practical substitutes—but they are not replicas of the Alexa cocktail table.
