There is no universal winner. During terminal construction, the easiest choice is the option whose current pickup point or parking route is open, clearly signed, and practical for your walking, transfer, and timing needs that day. Construction may move a rideshare island, close part of a curb, redirect a shuttle between terminal sides, or relocate overflow parking. Check the airport’s official construction and ground-transport pages immediately before leaving, then follow signs and staff directions on site.
What “easiest” means when an airport is under construction
Construction changes the normal journey in several different ways. A curb can be closed while the terminal building remains open. A parking garage can stay open while an overflow lot moves. A shuttle can still operate but use a different door or require a longer walk. Rideshare vehicles may be sent to a temporary island, and every road-based service can be delayed by the same lane restrictions.

For that reason, judge each option against four practical questions rather than assuming one mode is always fastest:
- Access and location: Is the current curb, garage, lot, or shuttle stop open and correctly signed?
- Road delay: Are reduced lanes or detours affecting cars, buses, shuttles, and rideshares alike?
- Walking and transfers: Can you reach check-in, baggage claim, or the meeting point without an unreasonable construction detour? Are the elevators, escalators, and accessible paths you need operating?
- Uncertainty: Can you identify the correct terminal side and adjust if the pickup point has moved?
Your purpose also matters. A person being dropped off, an arriving passenger, and someone collecting a passenger may find different options easiest at the same airport.

Use this decision path before you leave
- Identify the exact terminal and trip direction. Note whether you are dropping off, being picked up, walking from a parked car, or transferring from a shuttle. “The airport” may have different rules for each terminal and level.
- Open the airport’s current construction page and ground-transport map. Look for today’s curb closures, moved pickup islands, garage or lot changes, terminal-side restrictions, and elevator or escalator outages. Construction schedules can change without preserving the usual route.
- Match the live location to your mode. Confirm the exact door, level, island, garage entrance, or shuttle stop—not merely the name of the service.
- Check the walking connection. A route that looks short on a map may include a closed crosswalk, a detour around work, or a level change. If you have mobility, luggage, or child-seat constraints, verify that the alternative path is usable.
- Assess road congestion for every vehicle option. If the airport says private cars, buses, shuttles, and rideshares share the same constrained approach roads, changing vehicle type will not remove that delay.
- Add a construction buffer. Use any time allowance published by that airport, and add time for finding a moved stop, parking, walking, and recovering from a missed turn. Do not treat another airport’s advice as a universal rule.
- Recheck on the travel date. A closure described weeks earlier may have moved to another terminal side, while a scheduled completion date may have slipped.
When a shuttle is the easiest choice
Choose it when the current stop and transfer are unambiguous
A shuttle is straightforward when the airport identifies one open stop, provides clear signs from the terminal, and the route to your destination does not require guessing between terminal sides. This can be useful for hotel or off-site parking passengers who would otherwise navigate a construction detour on foot.
Verify the stop, not just the operator
Construction can move a shuttle’s curb while the service continues. San Antonio International Airport says hotel and off-site parking shuttles and rideshare services have shifted locations. Shuttle and other pickup points remain outside baggage claim on the lower level, but the exact areas can differ; travelers are directed to the current airport map and signs. That example shows why an old screenshot, a hotel’s generic directions, or a remembered door number may be wrong.
Account for shared road congestion
A shuttle does not bypass a closed approach lane. Perth Airport’s Terminal 2 passenger update says limited road capacity and nearby construction can make long-term parking shuttles take longer, while private cars, rideshares, and buses face the same traffic conditions. During that airport’s stated peak periods—4–6 a.m. and 5–8 p.m., Monday through Thursday—it advises adding at least 30 minutes. This is Perth’s local advice for its Terminal 2 conditions, not a general shuttle allowance.

Check transfer and accessibility details
If a phased project redirects commercial vehicles between terminal sides, you may need to cross a roadway, change levels, or take another shuttle. Denver International Airport’s March 26, 2026 commercial ground-transport notice described temporary redirection between Terminal West and Terminal East while raised crosswalk work affected commercial pickup and drop-off islands. The notice said work was scheduled to finish by Labor Day 2026, but schedules could change. Treat that as a dated example, not proof that the same arrangement is active now.
When rideshare is easiest—and when it is not
Its advantage is a direct, prearranged pickup
Rideshare can be the least confusing option when the airport provides a clearly marked temporary rideshare zone and your app displays the same terminal, level, and pickup instructions. It may avoid a transfer from an off-site lot, but it still depends on finding the correct island and meeting the driver there.

Expect the pickup point to move
San Antonio’s construction guidance specifically notes shifted rideshare locations. Follow the airport’s current instructions and the app’s airport-specific pickup prompt rather than walking to the usual curb. If the app gives a terminal name but the airport has divided pickup by terminal side, confirm the side before requesting the vehicle.
Rideshare shares the road problem
Construction does not create a private traffic lane for app-based vehicles. Perth Airport states that rideshares, buses, private cars, and parking shuttles are affected by the same traffic conditions around Terminal 2. A rideshare may still be convenient for a traveler who wants door-to-door service, but its convenience can disappear if the vehicle must queue in a restricted approach or if the meeting point is a long detour from baggage claim.
Build in a meeting-point fallback
Keep the airport’s designated door or island visible in your phone, and agree with companions on a backup meeting location permitted by the airport. Do not ask a driver to stop in a closed curb lane or an unmarked roadway. If signs direct passengers to another terminal side, follow those signs even when the rideshare app’s map appears to show the old location.
When parking is easiest
Parking can remove curbside uncertainty
For a traveler driving to the airport, an open garage with a direct pedestrian route can be easier than searching for a temporary drop-off island. For someone collecting an arriving passenger, a designated waiting lot or short-term garage can avoid circling a congested curb. San Antonio identifies a free 24/7 cell-phone waiting lot and short-term pickup parking; confirm current rules, time limits, and prices on the airport’s page before relying on them.
Do not assume every lot or walkway is available
Reno-Tahoe International Airport reports that its parking garage remains open while some overflow lots have moved. It warns drivers to allow extra time for overflow parking and suggests prebooking a Long-Term Garage space. The garage’s availability does not mean every entrance, pedestrian link, or overflow route is unchanged. Check the current parking map and signs before choosing a lot.

Compare the full parking journey
- Driving time to the correct entrance, including any loop-road detour.
- Time to find a space in the designated garage or relocated overflow area.
- Walking distance from the space to check-in or baggage claim.
- Whether an elevator, escalator, or accessible path is open.
- Extra time needed to return to a vehicle after an arrival pickup.
Parking is not automatically easier simply because the garage is open. A long detour from a remote lot can be harder than a clearly signed rideshare island, especially with heavy luggage or limited mobility.

For a departure drop-off
Start with the airline’s assigned terminal and the airport’s current drop-off door. Denver’s live terminal-construction guidance describes closed sections of the southern curb, temporary elevator and escalator closures, and detours. It tells travelers to check the airline’s correct drop-off door and use the airport map and signs. If a driver cannot reach the normal door, an alternative terminal side may be required, so leave time for the resulting walk or transfer.
For meeting an arriving passenger
Do not wait illegally on an active curb while trying to locate a moved pickup point. A cell-phone waiting lot or short-term garage may be simpler when the airport provides one. San Antonio’s free 24/7 cell-phone waiting lot and short-term pickup spaces are examples of facilities designed to reduce curbside uncertainty; local rules can change, so verify them before the trip.
For a traveler parking for several days
Check whether the long-term garage, surface lot, and shuttle route are all operating. Reno-Tahoe’s open garage and relocated overflow lots illustrate why a reservation in the recommended garage can be more predictable than arriving without a plan. Perth’s Terminal 2 update shows the trade-off: a long-term parking shuttle may take longer because the same construction traffic affects all road modes.
Airport case studies: what the local instructions show
| Airport and date | Construction-related condition | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|
| Denver International Airport, March 26, 2026 notice | Raised-crosswalk work was phased between Terminal West and Terminal East; partial Level 5 lane closures could redirect some commercial ground-transport users to the opposite terminal side. Separate terminal guidance describes Level 6 closures, detours, and temporary vertical-transport outages. | Verify the current terminal side, pickup or drop-off door, and walking route. The notice said the work was scheduled to finish by Labor Day 2026, but schedules could change. |
| Reno-Tahoe International Airport | Loop Road traffic patterns are affected; the parking garage remains open; some overflow lots have moved; rideshares, taxis, shuttles, and other operators continue outside Baggage Claim Door D. | Allow extra time for relocated overflow parking and consider the airport’s suggested Long-Term Garage prebooking. Confirm that Door D remains the active pickup point before travel. |
| San Antonio International Airport, Phase I March–December 2026 | Curbside lane work has shifted shuttle and rideshare pickup locations. Shuttle pickup remains outside baggage claim on the lower level, with exact areas subject to change. | Use the current map and signs. For arrivals, the airport identifies short-term-garage pickup spaces and a free 24/7 cell-phone waiting lot; confirm current limits and costs. |
| Perth Airport Terminal 2, passenger update accessed October 13, 2026 | Limited road capacity and nearby construction can increase congestion; long-term parking shuttles may take longer, while private cars, rideshares, and buses face the same traffic. | During 4–6 a.m. and 5–8 p.m. Monday–Thursday peak periods, the airport advises adding at least 30 minutes. This allowance applies to Perth Terminal 2 conditions. |
A simple choice matrix
| Your situation | Usually the clearest starting point | What must be verified |
|---|---|---|
| Being dropped at a departing flight | The open airline drop-off door or a clearly signed alternate terminal side | Curb closures, terminal-side redirection, elevator or escalator status, and walking distance to check-in |
| Meeting an arriving passenger | A designated waiting lot or short-term garage when the airport provides one | Opening hours, time limits, fees, and the permitted route to the arrivals pickup area |
| Using a hotel or off-site parking shuttle | The shuttle with a confirmed current stop and uncomplicated transfer | Exact baggage-claim level, door, terminal side, and road-delay warnings |
| Using rideshare | The service whose airport pickup island is clearly identified in current instructions | Terminal, level, island, app directions, and a backup meeting point |
| Parking for a multi-day trip | An open garage or lot with a verified pedestrian route | Lot availability, moved overflow areas, reservation options, shuttle frequency, and accessible paths |
Signs, staff, and last-minute changes
Airport construction signs override remembered routes and third-party directions. Denver International Airport’s official commercial ground-transport notice states: “Travelers should follow signage information and the direction of airport staff members.” That instruction matters when a temporary barrier conflicts with an app, a hotel email, or an older airport map.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Following an old pickup location
Symptom: Your app, hotel, or previous visit points to a curb that is now closed.
Fix: Use the airport’s current ground-transport map and match the terminal side, level, and door before requesting or boarding a vehicle.
Assuming one mode escapes congestion
Symptom: You switch from a shuttle to rideshare expecting an instant time saving, but both use the same restricted approach.
Fix: Check whether the airport says all road-based modes share the affected lanes. If they do, choose based on pickup clarity, walking, and transfer needs instead of vehicle type.

Bottom line for a construction-day trip
Choose the mode with the clearest current location and the fewest difficult transfers for your particular trip. A shuttle can be easiest when its stop is confirmed and direct; rideshare can be easiest when its temporary island is clearly signed; parking can be easiest when an open garage or waiting lot gives you a predictable route away from the curb. None is inherently easiest during construction, and no official comparison establishes a universal winner for time, cost, or convenience. Check the airport’s live instructions, allow extra time, and let on-site signs and staff determine the final route.
