ADSA Learning Strategy: What Automatic-Door Industry Training Covers

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

ADSA’s learning and development strategy was designed to give everyone working in the automatic-door industry a route to relevant training—not only frontline technicians. Announced on 17 November 2021, it covered qualifications, practical industry knowledge, general skills, apprenticeships, supportive programmes and management development, delivered through a blend of classroom and digital learning. The plan was intended to help member organisations with career progression, promotion and succession planning.

What ADSA announced

The Automatic Door Suppliers Association (ADSA) said it had mapped learning and development opportunities for its member organisations, employees and future workforces. The announcement, dated 17 November 2021, described a strategy spanning different business functions and career stages rather than a single technical course.

ADSA linked the strategy to member feedback about changing business conditions, future skills requirements, staff wellbeing and personal development. Its stated objectives were to support individual career aspirations, prepare people for promotion and help businesses plan succession. That broad scope matters in an industry where safe, compliant automatic-door work depends on more than installation and maintenance alone.

The strategy also recognised roles that are sometimes overlooked in technical training plans. ADSA specifically referred to sales, customer service and warehouse management alongside frontline technical work. In practical terms, the announcement treated the industry as a complete workforce: people who specify or sell systems, coordinate customers, handle stock, manage teams and deliver technical services all need role-appropriate development.

Who the strategy was intended to serve

Technical employees

Technicians and other engineering staff were included in the industry-specific part of the plan. The announcement did not publish a complete catalogue of technical modules or state which qualifications were mandatory for particular tasks. It did, however, place technical learning alongside formal qualifications, standards-related knowledge and continuing development.

Sales and customer-service teams

ADSA’s wording expressly extended beyond engineering. Sales staff and customer-service employees were named as part of the audience, indicating that the strategy was intended to build enough industry understanding for non-technical roles to support customers accurately and work effectively with technical colleagues.

Warehouse and operational staff

Warehouse management was another named area. That inclusion signals that stock, logistics and operational coordination were considered part of workforce capability, not separate from the industry’s learning needs.

Managers and future leaders

Management development and succession planning were listed as strategy components. The plan therefore addressed current supervisors and managers as well as employees who might move into leadership. Apprenticeships and development for future workforces were included in the same overall framework.

What types of learning were included

ADSA described a portfolio rather than one qualification. The strands below are the categories identified in its announcement.

The announcement did not set out a complete syllabus, entry requirements, assessment schedule or price for each strand. Employers and individuals therefore need to confirm current course details directly with ADSA or the relevant training provider before relying on any particular option.

Qualifications: from NVQs to diplomas

ADSA said its formal learning offer ranged from NVQs to diplomas. Those labels describe different levels and formats of recognised vocational study, but the 2021 announcement did not specify a single qualification path for every job. A sensible interpretation is that learners could enter at a stage appropriate to their existing experience and progress as their responsibilities grew.

When evaluating a qualification, ask four practical questions:

  • Is it designed for the learner’s current role or for a planned next role?
  • What evidence, assessment or workplace participation is required?
  • Which organisation awards or assesses it?
  • Is the programme still available under the current terms?

These checks are important because the strategy is historical evidence of what ADSA announced in 2021, not a guarantee that every qualification, provider or funding arrangement remains unchanged in October 2026.

The Entrance Systems Alliance and other delivery relationships

ADSA reported that it formed the Entrance Systems Alliance with the Door and Hardware Federation (DHF) in January 2021 to deliver industry-based NVQs. The alliance was presented as one way to support vocational qualification delivery in the sector.

ADSA also said it had joined forces with private training providers, assessment centres and e-learning technology companies. The announcement identifies these as delivery relationships, but it does not provide a current list of partners, course prices, referral terms or confirmation that every relationship is still active. Treat the names as context for how ADSA said training was organised at the time, not as a current endorsement list.

How learning was delivered

Blended learning

ADSA described a blended model combining classroom teaching with digital methods and resources. A blended approach can allow practical or discussion-based work to happen with an instructor while theory, refreshers and reference material are accessed online. The announcement did not prescribe a fixed ratio between classroom and online study, so the balance may differ by course.

The ADSA Academy

The ADSA Academy was described as a web-based learning hub. ADSA said it offered free and paid course content, technical briefings and news, with access included among member benefits. This made the Academy a central place for both structured learning and ongoing industry information.

In the 17 November 2021 strategy article, ADSA reported more than 25,000 Academy accesses since the Academy was created in 2017. That is a historical cumulative figure published in 2021; it should not be read as a current access count.

A separate ADSA site search result describes the Academy as an online learning platform with more than 100 courses. The update date for that listing is unclear, so the number should be treated as a description attributed to ADSA’s site rather than a verified October 2026 catalogue total. Confirm the current course count, member access rules and any fees before enrolling.

What the strategy means for employers

For an automatic-door business, the most useful feature of the strategy was its whole-organisation view. Instead of limiting development budgets to technicians, an employer could map learning needs across the functions ADSA named.

Build a role-and-stage map

  1. List the roles in the business, including technical, sales, customer service, warehouse and management positions.
  2. Record the skills each role requires now and the skills needed for the next likely promotion.
  3. Mark where a formal NVQ or diploma, industry-specific learning, key-skills training or management development may fit.
  4. Identify apprenticeships or other supported routes for future employees.

Connect learning with succession planning

ADSA explicitly connected its strategy with promotion and succession planning. Employers can use that principle by naming potential successors for critical roles, then assigning development that addresses their gaps. A plan should state who owns each action, what evidence will show progress and when the role requirements will be reviewed.

Include wellbeing and support

The member research cited by ADSA included staff wellbeing and personal development. Training plans should therefore account for workload, time away from operational duties and the support a learner needs to complete study. A course that is technically suitable may still fail if employees cannot realistically attend or access its digital elements.

What the strategy means for employees

Employees can use the announced categories to frame a development conversation with a manager or employer. Start by describing the work you do, the responsibilities you want next and the evidence you already have. Then ask whether the most suitable route is a formal qualification, a short industry briefing, a key-skills course, an apprenticeship or management development.

Ask for the practical conditions before committing: delivery format, assessment method, time required, access to online resources, any learner contribution and how completion will be recorded. Because the original announcement does not publish universal entry rules or prices, those details must come from the current provider.

Immediate job knowledge Industry-specific content or technical briefings Subject coverage, update date and relevance to your role

Progression into supervision Management development Whether the programme covers your intended responsibilities and succession goals

Important limits on what is known today

The strongest evidence is ADSA’s announcement from 17 November 2021. It establishes what ADSA said the strategy was intended to do at that time. It does not prove that every programme, partner, course price or member benefit remains active in 2026.

The Academy’s “more than 100 courses” description comes from a separate ADSA search result with no clear update date. Likewise, the 25,000-plus access figure is explicitly a total reported in the 2021 article since the Academy’s 2017 creation, not a live usage statistic. Anyone making a current training decision should verify the present catalogue, access conditions, assessment arrangements and provider status.

Why the strategy still matters

ADSA’s approach is notable because it treats competence as an industry-wide responsibility. Automatic-door businesses rely on coordinated work: customers need clear information, stock and logistics must support delivery, technical teams need relevant knowledge, and managers must maintain capability as people progress or leave. A training plan that covers only one job family can leave those connections weak.

ADSA Managing Director Ken Price summarised the intended reach in the 17 November 2021 announcement: “We now have a wide-reaching strategy that is inclusive and delivers not only what our members need now, but into the future to help those businesses grow.” He added that it recognised “everyone who works within the automatic door industry” and aimed to support people in their specific jobs while underpinning their skills with industry knowledge and standards.

Read as a framework, the strategy gives employers and workers a useful checklist: match learning to the role, provide routes for progression, combine formal and practical development, and include the people who support technical delivery as well as those who perform it. The current details must be checked with ADSA or the named provider, but the underlying model remains clear from the announcement.
