In a 2024 review of the Hatch Restore 2, the device helped create a quieter, more peaceful sleep environment while failing to consistently get the reviewer out of bed.
That distinction matters. A sunrise alarm is best understood as a sleep-environment and routine tool—not a guarantee that a small bedside light will overcome sleep deprivation, snoozing habits, a dark or badly arranged bedroom, or an underlying sleep problem.

What a sunrise alarm clock actually does
A sunrise alarm, also called a dawn simulator, wake-up light, or light alarm, gradually increases its light output before a programmed wake time. The light may begin as a dim red, amber, or warm glow and become brighter over roughly 30 minutes, depending on the model. A sound alarm usually starts at or near the selected wake time.

Some devices also provide simulated sunsets, white noise, nature sounds, sleep stories, meditations, night-lights, and scheduled bedtime routines. Those features serve two different purposes:
#1 Best Overall
- Gentle Wake Up with Sunrise Alarm Clock: The sunrise simulation gradually brightens over a customizable 5-60 minutes before your set alarm time, aligning with your circadian rhythm for a peaceful, stress-free start to your day.
- Soothing Sound Machine for Better Sleep: Choose from 25 calming sounds, including white/pink/brown/blue noise and natural sounds like waves and rain. Set the sleep timer for a restful slumber.
- Immersive Bluetooth Audio: Stream music, podcasts, or audiobooks via Bluetooth. The 5W stereo speaker delivers clear sound quality, creating an immersive listening experience.
- 0-100% Dimmable Digital Clock & Night Light: Adjust the clock’s display to the perfect brightness with a full-range dimmer. The soft night light features 12 color options including a sunset light, perfect for reading or relaxing before bed.
- Personalize Your Wake-Up Experience: Customize your morning with 7 alarm sounds and adjustable volume. Choose from 3 wake-up modes: gentle light + sound, just the alarm, or sunrise light without sound for a natural wake-up experience.
- Morning: making the transition from darkness and sleep more gradual.
- Evening: creating a repeatable wind-down routine and masking distracting noise.
Specifications vary considerably. For example, a representative Philips HF3505/01 leaflet describes a 30-minute sunrise and brightness of up to 200 lux. That is a model-specific specification, not an industry standard for every sunrise alarm.
What happened with the Hatch Restore 2
The Ars Technica review, published August 29, 2024, tested the Hatch Restore 2 for approximately three weeks. The reviewer was already difficult to wake, sometimes slept through alarms, turned away from the light, and repeatedly used snooze.
The Restore 2 did not reliably solve those morning problems. Its light was not always effective when the sleeper faced away from it, and gentle sounds could be too easy to ignore. The alarm could also be configured with brightness or volume lower than intended, while snooze and alarm-off controls were not immediately intuitive.
At night, however, the device performed better. Its sunset routine and sound masking helped make the bedroom more peaceful, particularly when blending with an unpleasant air-conditioner noise. The reviewer found the bedtime experience more valuable than the promise of effortless morning waking.

That is a personal product test, not a controlled clinical study. It should not be treated as proof that every Restore 2 user will have the same result. It does illustrate an important practical distinction:
| Performance question | What a sunrise alarm may do | What it cannot guarantee |
|---|---|---|
| Falling asleep | Provide a predictable routine, calming light, or masking sound | Reliably treat insomnia |
| Waking comfortably | Reduce the abruptness of a loud alarm | Make every awakening pleasant |
| Waking reliably | Give light and sound cues before or at the wake time | Wake every heavy sleeper |
| Getting out of bed | Support a consistent routine | Replace adequate sleep or change snoozing habits by itself |
Why it may help sleep more than waking
The bedtime benefits
A sleep clock can be useful even if its morning alarm is only moderately effective. A scheduled sunset routine can act as a cue to begin winding down. Warm, low-level light may be more comfortable than a bright phone screen, and built-in audio can reduce the temptation to browse in bed.
Sound masking can be especially useful where intermittent household or mechanical noise is the main problem. A fan, air purifier, or basic sound machine may accomplish the same thing with less complexity, but an integrated device can reduce the number of separate timers and controls.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe most realistic benefit is often behavioral: repeating the same sequence each night removes decisions from the bedtime process. It does not prove that sleep quality has objectively improved. “Better sleep” might mean falling asleep more easily, feeling less tense, experiencing fewer audible interruptions, or recording a measurable change in sleep continuity; those are different outcomes.

The morning limitations
A sunrise light only works if enough light reaches the sleeper’s eyes. Effectiveness can be reduced when:
- the clock is too far away or positioned at an unhelpful angle;
- the sleeper turns toward a wall or away from the device;
- bedding, furniture, curtains, or an eye mask blocks the light;
- the bedroom is already bright, making the gradual increase less noticeable;
- the light output is too low for that person’s sensitivity;
- the sound is too quiet to overcome deep sleep; or
- the user immediately snoozes and returns to sleep.
Increasing the volume may improve reliability but can undermine the gentle-wake-up purpose and disturb a partner. A light sleeper and a person who regularly sleeps through several alarms may need entirely different equipment.
Is the light strong enough to affect your body clock?
Light and darkness are major circadian signals. Consistent morning light can influence sleep timing and may improve some aspects of sleep or morning alertness in certain people. But a comfortable wake-up experience is not proof that a consumer clock has meaningfully shifted circadian phase.
Timing, intensity, duration, distance, angle, and consistency all matter. Individual sensitivity matters too. A small bedside lamp is not automatically equivalent to outdoor daylight or a clinical bright-light device. Reviews of light exposure and sleep outcomes and a light-therapy systematic review and meta-analysis report benefits that vary by intervention, population, and outcome.

Clinical bright-light interventions commonly use substantially more light than a decorative or low-output bedside clock. If your goal is to adjust a delayed schedule or obtain structured morning light exposure, compare devices using measured illuminance at a stated distance—not a color description such as “sunrise.” Follow safety instructions and seek professional advice when a medical condition, medication, eye problem, or mood disorder is involved.
Similarly, claims such as “supports your circadian rhythm,” “clinically proven,” or “wakes you naturally” need careful interpretation. Hatch’s circadian language is marketing, while Philips makes clinical claims for specified Wake-up Light models, not for every sunrise alarm. Neither supports a blanket promise that any consumer device will reset everyone’s body clock.

The value question is not simply whether the lamp works. It is whether you will use the wider sleep-routine system:
- Choose Hatch when bedtime audio, automated routines, design, and a dedicated sleep ecosystem are central to what you want.
- Be cautious if you mainly need a powerful alarm, dislike Wi-Fi and accounts, or do not want recurring content fees.
- Check the current model-specific terms before buying if subscription-free use is important. Device ownership, basic alarm functions, and access to premium stories or meditations are separate questions.
The Restore 2 required Wi-Fi and app setup, although some routines could later be started using on-device buttons. The review also found that extensive customization created opportunities for setup mistakes. “Phone-free” does not necessarily mean “setup-free.”
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.How to test one without missing an important morning
- Place the clock with a clear line of sight from the pillow, close enough that its light is not merely decorative.
- Start with a sunrise period of about 30 minutes if the model supports it. This is a practical starting point, not a universal medical setting.
- Set the brightness high enough to be noticeable without being uncomfortable.
- Use a sound alarm as a backup for the first week.
- Test the alarm on a non-critical morning and confirm the intended days are enabled.
- Check both alarm volume and light brightness after app setup or software changes.
- Evaluate two separate results: how comfortable waking felt, and whether you actually got out of bed on time.
- If it repeatedly fails to wake you, stop treating it as a complete alarm solution.
Which type of solution fits the problem?
| Your main need | Most suitable direction |
|---|---|
| Gentler light without extra features | A basic non-connected sunrise alarm |
| Reliable waking from deep sleep | A conventional alarm designed for heavy sleepers, possibly with a separate backup |
| Noise masking | A fan, air purifier, or dedicated sound machine |
| A structured bedtime routine | A dedicated sleep clock such as the Hatch approach, or a timer-controlled lamp and audio system |
| Morning light for schedule adjustment | Outdoor morning light or a properly specified bright-light device |
| No phone beside the bed | A physical clock with clear on-device controls |
Philips Wake-up Light models can suit buyers who want a more traditional dedicated device with gradual light and sound, but model names, features, availability, and claims vary by market. Consult the exact model documentation, such as the HF3520/60 leaflet or HF3505/01 leaflet, rather than generalizing from one product.

Repeatedly sleeping through alarms can reflect insufficient sleep, irregular shift work, medication effects, hearing difficulty, stress, or a sleep disorder. Snoozing may also be a learned habit rather than a failure of alarm technology. Consistent sleep duration, a regular schedule, morning daylight, and reducing disruptive bedroom noise may matter more than adding features.
A sunrise alarm should not be presented as a treatment for insomnia, delayed sleep-wake phase disorder, depression, or another medical condition. If difficulty waking is persistent, severe, or accompanied by excessive daytime sleepiness, discuss it with a qualified healthcare professional.
Verdict
The Hatch experience supports a narrower and more useful conclusion than the usual “wake up naturally” promise. A sunrise alarm may make the bedroom calmer, bedtime more consistent, and the alarm less jarring. It may also influence sleep timing when the light is sufficiently strong, correctly timed, and used consistently.
But it may not make a heavy sleeper get out of bed. The Restore 2 review found the device more successful as a sleep-environment tool than as a guaranteed morning wake-up system. The current Restore 3 makes the most sense for someone who values an integrated bedtime routine and optional audio content. A simpler non-connected wake-up light is a better fit for someone who only wants gradual light, while a properly specified bright-light device is more appropriate when the goal is deliberate morning light exposure or circadian scheduling.
