Choose the point where you want the curtain hem to finish, then measure from the curtain’s actual hanging point—rod, track, rings or other hardware—to that point. A window’s height alone won’t tell you the panel length you need: mounting position and curtain heading affect the finished drop.
Which curtain length should you choose?
Start with the room’s use, the look you want and what the fabric must clear. Retail terms can vary, so decide on a specific endpoint rather than relying on a style label alone.

As IKEA UK puts the choice: “Do you prefer window sill length, apron length, floor length or do you want your curtains to softly pool on the floor?” IKEA UK’s curtain-length guide presents those as options, but the endpoint you choose—not the label—is what matters when measuring.

How to measure the curtain drop
- Choose the endpoint and mounting position. Consider the window trim, ceiling, radiator, counters, plants and furniture, as well as whether the curtains need to clear the opening. IKEA UK says wall-mounted solutions are usually placed about 15 cm above the window; its guide also presents ceiling mounting as an option. The Home Depot gives a broader range, from a few inches above the trim to a few inches below the ceiling. These are retailer design suggestions, not building standards. - Install or settle on the rod or track before taking the final measurement. Measure from the point where the curtain will actually hang. For outside-mounted curtains, The Home Depot advises measuring from the rod to the floor; if using rings, account for where the curtain hangs from the rings. Check how the product listing defines its finished length, since headings can hang differently.
- Measure to your chosen endpoint. For sill length, measure to the sill and decide whether the hem will sit at or just above it. For below-sill length, measure to your chosen point below the sill. For floor length, measure from the hanging point to the floor and choose the desired hover or touch. For a puddled finish, add the extra fabric you want to rest on the floor.
- Measure width and hardware separately. The Home Depot suggests extending an outside rod 8–10 inches beyond each side of the window; IKEA UK suggests at least 15 cm on each side. These are retailer-specific rules of thumb. A wider rod gives panels space to stack beside the glass when open. - Check the exact listing before ordering. Confirm the units, finished length, whether the stated dimension includes tabs or other heading details, and whether dimensions are for one panel or a pair.
How to choose between ready-made and made-to-measure
Measure the intended drop first, then compare it with the specific product listing. Ready-made sizes vary by seller and region, and listed examples are not a universal standard or a guarantee that a size is in stock. The Home Depot’s US guide gives ready-to-hang examples of 63, 84, 96 and 108 inches; Homes & Gardens lists examples of 63, 84, 96, 108 and 120 inches. If a ready-made panel does not match the measured drop or the heading does not suit your hardware, made-to-measure curtains are another category to consider. Check the listing or maker’s instructions for how they define finished length before comparing dimensions.

- Clearance: Will the hem or fabric interfere with a radiator, counter, window seat or furniture?
- Appearance: Do you want a tailored sill finish, a below-sill drop, a full-length look or a deliberate pool of fabric?
- Maintenance and movement: Will fabric near or on the floor collect dust or get in the way of foot traffic?
- Mounting and heading: Where is the rod or track, and how do rings or the curtain heading affect the drop?
- Fit: Does the product’s stated finished length match the measured drop, and are the dimensions given per panel or for a pair?
