Choose a centrifugal juicer if you value speed, large batches, minimal preparation, and a lower upfront cost. Choose a masticating juicer—also called a slow or slow-press juicer—if you mainly juice leafy greens, celery, or wheatgrass and prefer quieter operation, denser juice, and potentially less aeration. Neither type is universally healthier or better: the right choice depends on what you juice, how often you use the machine, and how much preparation and cleaning you will tolerate.
Centrifugal vs. masticating juicers at a glance
| Factor | Centrifugal | Masticating |
|---|---|---|
| How it works | Shreds produce and spins it through a perforated basket. | Crushes and presses produce with a slow auger. |
| Best advantage | Fast feeding and large-batch convenience. | Leafy greens, fibrous produce, quieter operation, and dense juice. |
| Preparation | Often accepts larger pieces, depending on the chute. | Usually needs smaller pieces and slower feeding. |
| Texture | Often lighter and more aerated, with more foam. | Usually denser and less foamy; screen choice matters. |
| Cleanup | Fewer parts may be offset by a difficult-to-scrub filter basket. | More parts are common, but newer designs may simplify cleaning. |
| Typical buyer | An occasional juicer prioritizing speed and convenience. | A frequent juicer willing to spend more time and money for versatility. |
These are category tendencies, not guarantees. Feed-chute size, screen design, motor construction, duty cycle, and the specific ingredients can change the experience substantially.

How centrifugal juicers work
A centrifugal juicer uses a sharp grating disc to shred produce. The shredded material enters a perforated basket that spins at high speed. Centrifugal force pushes liquid through the basket while the remaining pulp is collected separately or ejected into a pulp container.
- Produce enters through the feed chute.
- A grating disc shreds it.
- A high-speed basket spins the shredded produce.
- Juice passes through the screen while pulp is separated.
This design is particularly convenient for apples, carrots, beets, and other firm produce. Wide-chute models can reduce cutting time, and manufacturers such as Breville position high-speed machines around quick extraction and batch-friendly preparation.

The trade-off is that fast spinning can introduce more air, creating foam and a lighter texture. Fibrous greens may be less convenient because lightweight leaves can collect around the basket instead of producing much juice. The basket can also be laborious to scrub if residue dries.
How masticating juicers work
A masticating juicer draws produce into a rotating auger. The auger crushes and compresses the ingredients, forcing juice through a strainer while relatively dry pulp exits through another opening. Kuvings describes this as low-speed crushing and pressing.
- Produce is pulled into the auger.
- The auger crushes and compresses it.
- Juice passes through a selected screen.
- Pulp leaves through a separate outlet.
“Cold press” is commonly used as shorthand for this type of juicer, but a home slow juicer is not necessarily a traditional hydraulic press. For example, Kuvings says its machines use a heavy auger rather than a hydraulic press. The label describes the extraction approach, not a guarantee of superior nutrition, safety, or storage life.

Nutrition, oxidation, and the “cold-pressed” claim
Masticating juicers can introduce less air and often produce less foam. That may affect appearance, texture, separation, and how fresh the juice tastes. It does not prove that every nutrient is preserved better.

- EASY SETUP & COMPACT DESIGN : Space-saving juicer fits easily under kitchen cabinets and is easy to assemble, making it ideal for small kitchens, apartments, or everyday countertop use.
Nutrient retention depends on the ingredient, nutrient, temperature, oxygen exposure, light, and storage time. A peer-reviewed comparison of centrifugal and cold-pressed juices found no significant immediate difference in several measured compounds, including ascorbic acid, phenolics, carotenoids, and antioxidant capacity, for the juices tested. Its storage findings also varied with temperature and time. Read the published study and its open-access text for the experimental limits.
The practical conclusion is narrower than many product claims: masticating juicers may reduce aeration and produce a preferred texture, but “cold-pressed equals substantially more nutritious” is too broad. Fresh ingredients and prompt refrigeration matter at least as much as the extraction label.

Which type is best for different ingredients?
| Ingredient or use | Usually the better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Apples, carrots, and beets | Centrifugal or either | Centrifugal models are fast; slow models may produce a different texture. |
| Leafy greens | Masticating | An auger generally handles fibrous leaves more effectively than a high-speed basket. |
| Celery | Masticating | Long fibers can wrap or clog, so cutting and alternating ingredients still matter. |
| Wheatgrass | Horizontal masticating | Many horizontal models are designed for fibrous greens; verify the manual. |
| Soft berries or ripe fruit | Masticating, depending on the screen | Soft produce can create pulp-heavy juice or clogging. |
| Citrus | Dedicated citrus press | A citrus press may be simpler and faster for oranges, lemons, limes, and grapefruit. |
| Frozen fruit | Only a compatible model | Use a blank or sorbet strainer only when the manual permits it. |
| Nuts or soy milk | Some masticating models | This depends on the model and included attachments. |
| Large batches | Centrifugal or commercial-rated equipment | Household machines may have limited duty cycles. |
Neither general-purpose juicer is automatically the best tool for citrus-only households. Breville maintains a separate citrus-juicer category.
Speed, preparation, noise, and cleanup
Speed and preparation
Centrifugal machines normally win from setup to finished juice. They are well suited to large batches and mostly whole apples or carrots. Masticating machines generally require slower feeding, more attention to ingredient order, and smaller pieces.

Do not assume every slow juicer requires extensive chopping. The Kuvings EVO820, for example, lists a 3.2-inch feed chute, while Hurom recommends pieces of about two inches for efficient feeding and yield. The manual for the exact model is the authority.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Noise
Masticating juicers are generally marketed as quieter because their augers operate at lower speeds. Actual noise also depends on the motor, housing, vibration, and produce. Hurom describes the H400 as using a near-silent 150-watt AC motor, while Kuvings lists the EVO820 at 60 rpm and 240 watts. Those specifications do not prove that one category is universally quieter.
Cleaning
Neither type is always easier to clean. Centrifugal baskets may hold fine pulp and require brushing. Masticating models commonly have more removable parts, and fibrous ingredients can clog screens or wrap around the auger.
Model design matters. The Hurom H400 is marketed with a scrub-free chamber, while the Kuvings EVO820 includes cleaning tools. Treat these as model-specific features, not universal properties of slow juicers.
Yield and texture: what actually matters
There is no universal winner for juice yield. Results depend on freshness, water content, feeding speed, cutting, screen design, pulp back-pressure, and whether the pulp is unusually wet.

Distinguish three measures:
- Yield by volume: how much liquid reaches the cup.
- Pulp dryness: a useful practical clue, but not a complete laboratory measurement.
- Usable yield: the juice obtained relative to preparation time, cleanup, and wasted produce.
A masticating machine may produce drier pulp from one ingredient while a centrifugal model is more valuable for a large batch because it saves preparation time. Manufacturer claims such as “maximum yield” are product-specific, not proof that every slow juicer beats every centrifugal model.
Centrifugal juice is often lighter and foamier. Masticating juice is often denser and smoother, although fine, coarse, smoothie, and sorbet screens can change the result. A smoother texture is a sensory preference, not evidence that the juice is healthier. Separation is also normal: pulp can settle naturally, and Kuvings notes that separation may result from settling rather than oxidation.

Before juicing
- Wash your hands with soap and warm water.
- Wash produce thoroughly under running water. Do not use soap, detergent, or commercial produce washes.
- Trim damaged or rotten areas.
- Remove pits, stones, hard seeds, and inedible parts.
- Remove citrus peel unless the manual specifically permits it.
- Cut celery, pineapple fibers, kale stems, and other stringy produce into manageable sections.
- Assemble the correct screen, pulp container, and juice outlet on a stable, dry surface.
These steps reflect the FDA’s produce-handling guidance.
While feeding
- Begin with a firm or watery ingredient.
- Feed gradually rather than packing the chute.
- Alternate fibrous greens with watery or firm produce.
- Use the pusher only as directed.
- Use reverse only if the machine has that function and its manual permits it.
- If clogging continues, switch off, unplug, and disassemble according to the manual.
Do not force produce. Overloading can worsen wet pulp, clogging, and motor strain.

How long does homemade juice last?
A home juicer does not pasteurize juice. “Cold press,” “slow,” and “masticating” describe extraction mechanics, not pathogen elimination. The FDA warns that raw, untreated juice can carry harmful bacteria and that children, older adults, pregnant people, and immunocompromised individuals face higher risks. FDA’s Juice HACCP guidance explains the role of validated pathogen controls such as pasteurization in commercial processing.
Drink homemade juice promptly when practical. If storing it, refrigerate it immediately in a clean, sealed container and keep it cold. Do not use a universal 24-, 48-, or 72-hour promise based solely on the juicer type. Storage depends on sanitation, ingredients, temperature, container, light, and handling. Even dangerous contamination may not produce an unusual smell, gas, or visible mold.
Choosing a juicer based on your habits
Choose centrifugal if you want:
- The fastest workflow.
- Large batches.
- Minimal cutting.
- A lower initial cost.
- Mostly firm fruits and vegetables.
- A lighter, more aerated texture.
- An appliance for occasional use.
Choose masticating if you want:
- Leafy greens, celery, or wheatgrass.
- Lower operating noise.
- Dense, smoother juice.
- More control over pulp and texture.
- Potentially less aeration.
- Attachments for smoothies, sorbet, nut milk, or food processing.
- A higher purchase price in exchange for features or warranty coverage.
Consider a blender instead
If your goal is a whole-food smoothie rather than strained juice, a blender retains more of the produce’s physical structure and insoluble fiber. A juicer is the better match when you specifically want liquid juice.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsModels and buying checks
When comparing products, prioritize the warranty terms, authorized seller status, replacement-parts availability, online manual, cleaning access, ingredient guidance, feed-chute dimensions, and household duty cycle. RPM alone is not a quality score: auger geometry, torque, screen design, feeding technique, and produce type matter too.
- Breville’s centrifugal range is positioned around fast extraction and wide-chute convenience.
- Kuvings EVO820 lists 60 rpm, 240 watts, a 3.2-inch chute, and included smoothie and blank/sorbet strainers.
- Kuvings REVO830 emphasizes wide pulp and juice outlets and a premium vertical design.
- Kuvings NJE3580U is a horizontal model listed at $299.99 USD on the indexed official page, with extra food-processing functions and a five-year warranty signal. Prices and terms can change.
- Hurom H400 emphasizes easy cleaning, a 150-watt motor, and a compact vertical form.
- Omega Pure Press VSJ843 lists a 15-year limited warranty on its indexed page.
Warranty length varies by country, model, seller, parts, motor, and intended use. For example, Hurom states that its U.S. warranty terms depend on purchase from Hurom.com or an authorized seller. Verify current terms before buying.
Final verdict
Buy a centrifugal juicer when speed, large batches, firm produce, and low preparation matter most. Buy a masticating juicer when leafy greens, fibrous ingredients, quiet operation, dense texture, and additional functions justify slower feeding and more careful cleaning. Choose a citrus press for mostly citrus, or a blender when retaining whole-food fiber is the priority.
The best juicer is the one that matches your routine closely enough that you will use it, clean it promptly, and drink the juice safely.
