What Is Digging Holes in Your Yard at Night?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A yard full of fresh holes is frustrating, but the first mistake is assuming every hole means the same animal. On residential job sites, we look at lawn damage the same way we look at settlement, drainage, or cracked flatwork: pattern first, repair second. The shape, depth, location, and timing of the holes usually tell you whether you are dealing with skunks, raccoons, armadillos, moles, voles, groundhogs, rats, insects, drainage washout, or loose backfill.

If the damage appeared overnight, the most common suspects are skunks, raccoons, and, in warmer regions, armadillos. They are often digging for grubs, beetle larvae, earthworms, and other soil insects. Skunks tend to leave many shallow cone-shaped holes, often around 2 to 3 inches wide and deep. Raccoons are rougher; they may pull or peel back sections of sod like loose carpet. Armadillos also root around in small conical holes, especially in Southern markets.

That said, animal digging does not automatically prove you have a grub infestation. Healthy turf can tolerate a surprising number of grubs before the lawn itself shows damage, and grub populations are often patchy. The right sequence is simple: document the pattern, remove attractants, check for grubs, look for active burrows, protect problem areas temporarily, and repair the turf only after the digging slows down.

Start by Reading the Hole Pattern

Before buying repellents, traps, seed, or grub control, walk the yard in daylight and take photos. Put a tape measure, coin, or glove in the photo for scale. Mark fresh holes with landscape flags so you can tell whether the same spots are being reopened or new areas are being attacked each night.

Measure four things: the opening width, depth, whether soil is piled beside the hole, and whether the turf is lifted, tunneled, chewed, or simply punctured. Also note where the holes are located. Damage along a fence, under a deck, near a shed, beside a foundation, or in a soft drainage swale tells a different story than random holes in the middle of open turf.

Yard clue Likely cause What it usually means
Many shallow cone-shaped holes, about 2-3 inches wide Skunk or armadillo Animal is rooting for grubs, beetle larvae, worms, or insects
Sod peeled back in torn sheets or chunks Raccoon Food source under the turf, often grubs or other soil insects
Raised surface tunnels or volcano-like soil mounds Mole Mole is tunneling for worms and insects, not usually eating roots
Surface runways with small openings near mulch or cover Vole Small rodents are moving under grass, leaves, shrubs, or snow cover
Large burrow opening with excavated soil Groundhog or similar burrowing animal Active den may extend under deck, shed, porch, or slope
Holes near foundation with gnaw marks, droppings, or grease marks Rats or mice Pest-control issue; possible access into structure
Sunken spots after rain with no animal tracks Erosion, drainage, decayed roots, or buried debris Soil void or water movement may need grading or drainage repair

Fresh digging often looks messy because the animal is working fast and returning to good feeding areas. If you see the same patch torn up repeatedly, focus on what is attracting the animal there. In many lawns, the real target is not the turf. It is what lives under it.

Skunks, Raccoons, and Armadillos: The Common Night Diggers

Skunks are classic night diggers. Their holes are usually small, shallow, and cone-shaped, often scattered across a lawn like someone jabbed the soil with a narrow hand trowel. A skunk may make dozens of holes in one night if the feeding is good. The openings are commonly around 2 to 3 inches across and a few inches deep.

Raccoon damage is usually more aggressive. Instead of neat small holes, raccoons may grab weak turf and roll it back. If your lawn lifts easily by hand, especially in late summer or fall, there may be grubs or root loss below. Raccoons have strong front paws and will pull at sod where insects are concentrated.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Armadillos matter most in the Southeast, Gulf states, and warmer regions where their range has expanded. Their feeding holes can look similar to skunk holes: small, conical, and numerous. They root for insects, larvae, and other invertebrates. If you are in a warmer market and the holes appear overnight with no raised tunnel system, keep armadillos on the list.

Why the Damage Often Spikes in Late Summer and Fall

Late summer and fall are common periods for skunk and raccoon digging because many white grubs are larger and closer to the root zone. Mature grubs are a better meal than tiny larvae, and animals can find them by scent and feel. Spring damage may happen too, but spring holes can also point to moles, nesting animals, thawing soil, or insects becoming active again, depending on the region.

Do not treat the entire lawn just because an animal dug overnight. White grubs are patchy. A yard may have heavy numbers in one sunny irrigated section and almost none under shaded turf. We prefer verification before treatment because unnecessary pesticide use wastes money and can miss the actual problem.

How to Check for Grubs Before You Spend Money

The field check is straightforward. Pick several spots: two or three near fresh damage and one or two in healthy turf for comparison. Use a flat shovel to cut a 12-inch by 12-inch square on three sides, then fold the turf back like a flap. Look through the top 2 to 4 inches of soil and thatch for white C-shaped larvae.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Count the grubs in each one-square-foot section. Also look at root strength. If the sod peels back easily and roots are chewed short, the lawn has a turf-health problem even if animal digging brought it to your attention. If you find only a few grubs and the roots are firm, the animals may be feeding on earthworms, beetles, or other insects instead.

Thresholds vary by turf species, soil, irrigation, and grub species. Healthy turf can sometimes tolerate 20 or more grubs per square foot before showing visible injury, while stressed turf may fail with fewer. That is why a single test square is not enough. Inspect multiple areas and compare damaged turf to healthy turf.

Timing Grub Control Matters

Preventive grub products generally work best before or while young grubs are near the surface. Curative products are less forgiving. They need the correct active ingredient, correct timing, and enough irrigation to move the product into the root zone. Always follow the pesticide label exactly; the label controls where, when, and how a product can be used.

As a 2026 budget, many homeowners should expect grub prevention to run about $50 to $150 per treatment for common lawn sizes, with some corrective whole-lawn applications around $100 to $125 in typical markets. Larger lawns, severe infestations, premium products, and repeat visits cost more. If a company recommends treatment, ask what they found per square foot and which active ingredient they plan to use.

When the Culprit Is Not a Night Visitor

Not every yard hole is from an animal walking across the lawn at night. Some problems happen below the surface for weeks before the homeowner notices the opening.

Moles usually make raised tunnels and volcano-like mounds. They feed mostly on earthworms and insects. Killing grubs does not guarantee moles will leave because earthworms may still support them. The practical approach is to confirm active tunnels, reduce soil insect pressure where appropriate, and use legal control methods for your state.

Voles make surface runways and small entrance holes, often near mulch, groundcover, tall grass, stacked materials, or snow cover in colder climates. They can chew grass stems, roots, bark, and landscape plants. Reducing cover helps: keep mulch pulled back from trunks and siding, mow dense edges, and avoid storing lumber, cardboard, or debris along fence lines.

Groundhogs create larger burrow openings, often 8 to 12 inches wide, with a visible pile of excavated soil. The burrow may run under a shed, porch, deck, retaining wall, or slab edge. This is where lawn damage becomes a construction concern. A large burrow can loosen support under hardscape and create washout paths during rain.

Rodent holes near a foundation deserve a different response. Look for gnaw marks, droppings, greasy rub marks, damaged insulation, or gaps around utility penetrations. Rats and mice are pest-control issues, and sealing entry points without addressing active animals can push the problem into other parts of the structure.

Construction Red Flags: When Yard Holes Threaten More Than Grass

As builders, we pay close attention to holes within several feet of structures and hard surfaces. Turf can be replaced. Undermined soil below a porch pier, sidewalk, slab, driveway edge, or retaining wall can become a larger repair if water enters the void and keeps moving soil.

Call a qualified pro if holes or burrows are near a foundation, slab, porch pier, deck footing, retaining wall, driveway, sidewalk, drainage swale, downspout discharge, septic area, or known utility route. Also get help if soil keeps collapsing after rain, if a depression grows wider, or if you can push a rod into a soft void under concrete.

For foundation-adjacent damage, do not simply dump loose soil into the opening and walk away. Burrows and washouts should be backfilled in lifts, usually 4 to 6 inches at a time, with light compaction between lifts. The finished grade should slope away from the house. A common target is about 6 inches of fall over the first 10 feet where site conditions allow, but existing elevations, walks, neighboring lots, and drainage rules can limit what is practical.

If water is part of the problem, fix that before reseeding. Extend downspouts, correct negative grade, rebuild settled soil at the foundation, and stabilize bare channels. Otherwise the repaired patch may wash out during the next hard rain.

Remove Attractants Before You Rely on Repellents

Repellents can sometimes reduce digging temporarily, but they are not a complete plan. If the lawn still smells like food and the site offers shelter, animals will keep testing it. Sanitation and exclusion usually do more.

Secure trash with tight lids. Do not leave pet food outside overnight. Clean up fallen fruit. Keep compost free of meat, grease, and attractive scraps. Manage birdseed spillover under feeders. Close access under decks, sheds, porches, and crawlspaces after confirming no animals or young are inside.

For deck and shed exclusion, use durable material, not light plastic mesh. On many jobs, the practical detail is galvanized hardware cloth, often 1/4-inch to 1/2-inch mesh depending on the animal, fastened securely to framing and extended below grade. For digging animals, an L-shaped apron turned outward underground can discourage re-entry. The exact depth and detail depend on the species, soil, frost, and structure.

Do not trap first and think later. Skunks, raccoons, groundhogs, and other wildlife are regulated differently by state and sometimes by municipality. Some states restrict relocation. Some require licensed nuisance wildlife operators. Rabies-vector species may have special handling rules. Before setting a trap, check your state wildlife agency and local rules.

What Repairs Cost in 2026

Costs vary because the visible holes may be only one part of the work. A simple patch is cheap. A yard with wildlife removal, grub control, grading, sod, and drainage correction can become a real project.

Work item Typical 2026 US cost What changes the price
Wildlife removal About $198-$886 nationally; many jobs land near $378-$498 Species, number of animals, access, trapping visits, young animals, exclusion, cleanup
Skunk or raccoon removal Roughly $200-$600 for straightforward cases Deck or shed denning, odor work, crawlspace cleanup, multiple visits
Service call or inspection Often $150-$250 where charged separately Market, distance, emergency timing, inspection scope
Grub prevention or treatment Commonly $50-$150 per treatment; some corrective applications around $100-$125 Lawn size, product, timing, infestation level, irrigation needs
Small lawn patch About $20-$100 for a 25-square-foot patch Seed type, topsoil, compost, starter fertilizer, labor
Professional overseeding About $300-$1,350 or $0.04-$0.18 per square foot; some national ranges run $592-$1,768 Aeration, seed mix, slope, prep, bare soil percentage
Sod installation Often around $0.87-$1.76 per square foot in current comparisons; broader replacement budgets can reach $1.50-$4.00 per square foot Soil prep, irrigation, grade correction, access, sod type
Full lawn renovation For 5,000-10,000 square feet, about $7,500-$22,500 in many replacement scenarios Removal, grading, soil amendment, seed vs sod, irrigation, drainage

Hydroseeding can be a middle option, often about $0.06 to $0.20 per square foot. It costs more than basic broadcast seeding but much less than sod. Sod gives the fastest finished look, but it is more expensive and watering-intensive during establishment.

DIY Triage: A Practical Weekend Plan

For light to moderate damage away from structures, a homeowner can usually handle the first round of diagnosis and temporary repair. Start by photographing the damage and measuring the holes. Rake loose turf back into place where possible. If raccoons peeled sod but the roots are still attached, press it down, water it, and keep foot traffic off it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Next, do the one-square-foot grub checks in several areas. If counts are low and the lawn is otherwise strong, focus on sanitation and temporary protection. If counts are high in the damaged area and timing lines up with grub activity in your region, contact a lawn-care pro or your local extension office for treatment timing and product guidance.

For small patches, loosen the top 2 to 3 inches of soil, remove torn thatch, add a thin layer of screened topsoil or compost, seed with the right regional turf mix, and cover lightly with straw or a clean seed blanket. Keep the area consistently moist until germination. Many cool-season grasses need 7 to 21 days to germinate depending on species and weather; establishment takes longer. Keep mowing high and avoid herbicides until the new turf is mature enough for the product label.

For temporary protection, use stakes and lightweight fencing over repeat digging spots, or lay hardware cloth flat over seeded patches and pin it securely until germination begins. Do not leave sharp wire edges exposed. The goal is to interrupt the habit while the food source and turf weakness are addressed.

When to Hire a Pro

Hire a licensed nuisance wildlife operator if you suspect skunks, raccoons, groundhogs, or animals denning under a deck, porch, shed, crawlspace, or slab. This is especially true if young may be present. Removing an adult while leaving young behind can create odor, noise, and structural access problems. A proper job includes inspection, legal handling, exclusion, and follow-up.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Hire a pest-control company if the evidence points to rats or mice near the home. Rodent work should pair population control with exclusion. Common construction gaps include utility penetrations, deteriorated vent screens, open crawlspace doors, garage door gaps, and damaged siding transitions.

Hire a lawn-care professional when grub counts are high, turf lifts easily, or the damaged area is large enough that guessing will be expensive. A pro should inspect multiple sections, identify whether treatment timing makes sense, and explain watering requirements after application.

Bring in a contractor, drainage specialist, or landscape contractor when holes connect to settlement, erosion, washed-out soil, poor grading, or undermined concrete. That work is not just cosmetic. It may require backfill in compacted lifts, drainage correction, soil stabilization, or hardscape repair before the lawn can be restored.

How We Would Sequence the Fix

The cleanest repair order is diagnosis, control, exclusion, grading, then turf. If you reverse that order, you may pay twice.

First, identify whether the holes are feeding holes, tunnels, burrows, rodent openings, or washouts. Second, remove food and shelter attractants. Third, confirm or rule out grubs with several test squares. Fourth, use the right professional if wildlife, rodents, or structural soil movement is involved. Fifth, close den access only after confirming the animal is gone. Sixth, repair the soil and turf.

For burrows, backfill gradually. Place soil in 4- to 6-inch lifts and compact lightly so you do not leave a loose column that settles after the first rain. Restore the original grade or improve it where drainage was wrong. Near the house, keep soil below siding and weep details, and maintain positive drainage away from the foundation.

For turf, match the repair to the damage. A few scattered skunk holes may need only raking, topdressing, and seed. Peeled sod may survive if pressed down quickly and watered. Large torn areas may need aeration and overseeding. Full replacement is usually reserved for lawns with widespread root loss, heavy compaction, poor soil, major grading corrections, or repeated animal damage across broad areas.

The Bottom Line

Overnight yard holes are a clue, not a diagnosis. Small cone-shaped holes point toward skunks or armadillos. Peeled sod points toward raccoons. Raised tunnels suggest moles. Surface runways suggest voles. Large burrows with spoil piles point toward groundhogs or similar animals. Holes near the foundation with droppings or gnawing move the concern toward rodents.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The best fix is not the fastest bag of seed or the strongest repellent. It is a sequence: read the pattern, verify the food source, remove attractants, follow wildlife law, protect structures, then repair the lawn. If the holes are close to concrete, drainage paths, utilities, or the house itself, treat it as a site condition, not just a lawn nuisance. That is where a small hole can become a larger repair if water and loose soil are allowed to keep working.

Frequently Asked Questions

What animal makes small cone-shaped holes in a lawn overnight?

Skunks commonly make shallow cone-shaped holes about 2 to 3 inches wide while searching for grubs and insects. In warmer regions, armadillos can leave similar small conical holes.

Does digging mean I definitely have grubs?

No. Skunks, raccoons, and armadillos may be after grubs, beetle larvae, earthworms, or other insects. Confirm by cutting and folding back several one-square-foot turf sections and counting larvae.

How much does wildlife removal cost in 2026?

Nationally, professional wildlife removal commonly runs about $198 to $886, with many jobs near $378 to $498. Straightforward skunk or raccoon removal often falls around $200 to $600.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When should I worry about holes near my house?

Call a pro if holes are within several feet of a foundation, slab, porch pier, retaining wall, driveway, sidewalk, drainage swale, utility route, or if soil keeps collapsing after rain.

Should I repair the lawn right away?

Make temporary repairs if needed, but wait on major reseeding or sod until the digging slows and the cause is handled. Otherwise animals may tear up the new work.
