If you live with dogs or cats, the best washing machine is the one that can handle hair, odor, muddy towels, washable beds, slipcovers, and frequent loads without beating up your plumbing. For most pet households in 2026, that means a washer in the 4.5 to 5.5 cubic foot range, a removable hair or drain filter, extra rinse capability, a bulky bedding cycle, and either steam, sanitize, allergen, or Oxi-style odor control.
Our short answer: the best dedicated pet-hair washer category is Maytag’s Pet Pro line because it includes a built-in pet hair filter. The best durability-first choice is a Speed Queen laundry pair, especially when paired with a dryer routine that pulls hair into the lint system before washing. The best everyday efficiency choice is a high-quality ENERGY STAR front loader from brands such as LG, Electrolux, Samsung, GE, or Whirlpool with steam/allergen cycles and accessible filter maintenance. For large dogs and washable beds, do not go below about 5.0 cubic feet unless space forces the decision.
On our job sites, the appliance is only half the problem. Pet laundry creates heavier wet loads, more lint, more hair in drains, more moisture at the floor, and more frequent access needs behind the machines. A beautiful laundry wall that traps the washer in place is a maintenance mistake. The right setup gives you shutoffs you can reach, a cleanable lint path, a drain system that can keep up, a dryer vent that is short and serviceable, and flooring that can tolerate leaks, wet towels, and muddy paws.
What Makes a Washer Good for Pet Owners?
A pet-friendly washer should solve four problems: hair removal, odor control, bulky fabric movement, and maintenance access. A standard washer can clean pet towels, but it may not protect the drain pump or rinse hair out of bedding well enough over time.

- HELPS REDUCE PET HAIR DURING LAUNDRY: FurZapper is a reusable laundry aid designed to help loosen and remove loose dog and cat hair from washable fabrics as clothing moves through the washer and dryer. Results vary by fabric, hair type, amount of hair, appliance type, and load size.
- LOAD-SIZE GUIDANCE: Use one FurZapper for a small-to-medium load with light or moderate pet hair. Use two for larger loads, bedding, blankets, heavier pet hair, or multiple shedding pets. Do not overload the washer or dryer; laundry and FurZappers must move freely. For multiple pets or heavy hair, use additional FurZappers.
- USE IN WASHER AND DRYER: Place the FurZapper units in the washer with the laundry, then transfer the same units into the dryer. For heavily fur-covered items, remove excess loose fur before washing. Additional treatment or cycles may be required.
- FOR OPTIMAL PERFORMANCE: Do not use fabric softener or dryer sheets because they may coat the FurZapper and reduce tackiness. If needed, clean the FurZapper with a small amount of dish soap, rinse thoroughly, and allow it to regain its tacky surface.
- CARE AND LIMITATIONS: Do not use fabric softener or dryer sheets with FurZapper because they may coat the surface and reduce performance. When needed, wash the discs with dish soap, rinse thoroughly, and allow them to dry on a nonporous drying rack. The product does not permanently trap or store collected hair; loosened hair will move into the dryer lint trap.
Use these selection criteria before you look at color, Wi-Fi, or cabinet style:
- Capacity: Aim for 4.5 to 5.5 cubic feet for homes washing pet beds, sofa covers, throws, and large towels. Compact 2.2 to 2.8 cubic foot washers work in apartments and closets but are limiting for bulky bedding.
- Hair management: Look for a built-in pet hair filter, a removable pump filter, or a washer design with easy service access. Pet hair can clog drain pumps, standpipes, filters, and hoses.
- Rinse performance: Extra rinse, deep rinse, or pet-focused cycles matter because hair, detergent, dander, and odor residues need water movement, not just agitation.
- Sanitize, steam, allergen, or Oxi cycle: These settings help with odor, dander, and heavily used bedding. They are especially useful for washable crate pads and couch covers.
- High spin speed: Better water extraction shortens dryer time and reduces musty smells. This matters when laundering thick pet beds or multiple towels.
- Stainless steel drum: It resists rust, staining, and rough wear better than painted surfaces.
- Service network and warranty: Pet homes run more loads. Buy a machine that can be serviced locally and does not require dismantling a built-in wall to reach the filter.
ENERGY STAR certified clothes washers use about 20% less energy and about 30% less water than regular washers. Full-size certified washers average about 14 gallons per load, compared with about 20 gallons for standard machines. Certified front loaders can use about 50% less energy and water than top-load agitator washers, and about 25% less than top-load impeller washers. For a household washing pet items several times per week, those numbers are not minor.
Best Washing Machine Categories for Pet Households
There is no single best washer for every pet owner. A family with two large dogs, a mudroom, and washable beds has different needs than an apartment owner with one cat and a laundry closet. These are the categories we would use when helping a homeowner choose.
Best Pet-Hair Filter Washer: Maytag Pet Pro Models
Maytag’s Pet Pro laundry line is one of the few mainstream U.S. washer lines designed specifically around pet hair. The washer includes a built-in pet hair filter and a Pet Pro option. Maytag markets the system as removing 5 times more pet hair, and some models include sanitize-with-Oxi features for odor bacteria reduction.
This is the category to consider if your washer regularly sees dog blankets, fleece throws, pet towels, slipcovers, or washable beds. The built-in filter gives hair a designed place to go before it reaches harder-to-service parts of the machine or drain system.
Budget around $800 to $1,600 or more for pet-specific or premium washer-only models, depending on capacity, finish, promotions, and whether you buy a matching dryer. Full washer/dryer pairs commonly land around $1,500 to $3,500 or more.
Best Durability-First Setup: Speed Queen Washer and Dryer Pair
Speed Queen’s pet advantage is often the laundry routine, not just the washer. The dryer can be used first with a short Pet Plus, no-heat, or air-fluff tumble, where appropriate for the care label. That pulls loose hair into the lint trap before the item goes into the washer.
This approach is practical. Hair captured in a dryer lint screen is easier to remove than hair that goes through a washer drain pump. For heavy-shedding dogs, we like a 10-minute no-heat tumble before washing, followed by immediate lint-trap cleaning.

Best Efficient Everyday Washer: ENERGY STAR Front Loader With Steam or Allergen Cycle
A quality front-load washer is often the best everyday machine for pet owners who wash frequently and care about water and energy use. Front loaders use less water, extract more water in the spin cycle, and generally handle large fabric items well when not overloaded.
Look for 4.5 to 5.2 cubic feet, ENERGY STAR certification, steam or allergen cycle, extra rinse, a clean washer cycle, and accessible drain pump filter. LG, Electrolux, Samsung, GE, and Whirlpool all make front-load models that can fit this category, though features vary by exact model.
The key construction note is access. Many front-loaders have a small lower-panel pump filter or drain access point. Do not bury that behind a fixed cabinet face or trim panel. Pet households should expect monthly filter checks in heavy-use conditions.

Best for Large Dog Bedding: 5.0+ Cubic Foot Top Loader or Front Loader
Large washable beds need room to move. A washer that is technically big enough but packed tight will not rinse well, and the load can go out of balance. For larger dogs, prioritize 5.0 cubic feet or more, a bulky bedding cycle, strong spin extraction, and a matching dryer that can tumble the load freely.
Large-capacity GE, Whirlpool, LG, Samsung, and Maytag top loaders can be good fits when the homeowner wants easier loading height and big tub volume. Front loaders are usually better on water use and spin extraction, but a large top loader can be convenient for muddy blankets and utility loads.
Budget top-load washers can start around $350 to $550. Mid-range machines commonly run $500 to $900. Larger and premium models often range from $900 to $3,000, depending on capacity and features.
Best Compact or Closet Option: Stackable Front Load Pair
For condos, townhomes, ADUs, and tight laundry closets, a compact washer in the 2.2 to 2.8 cubic foot range may be the right physical fit. The tradeoff is simple: it will handle pet towels and small blankets, but not large beds well.

The Laundry Room Matters as Much as the Machine
A pet-focused laundry area has to be built for heavier use than a typical laundry closet. On remodeling projects, we look at water, drain, power, venting, floor protection, service access, and workflow before the owner orders appliances.

- Powerful Pet Hair Removal: Specially formulated to break down and eliminate stubborn pet hair that clogs your washer, keeping your machine running smoothly and your laundry fresh
- Eliminates Lingering Pet Odors: Effectively neutralizes and removes tough pet smells from deep inside your washing machine, so your clothes come out smelling clean, not like your furry friend
- Prevents Pet Dander Build-up: Helps stop the accumulation of pet dander and residues inside your washer, reducing allergens and keeping your laundry safe for sensitive skin
- Septic Tank & HE Safe: Compatible with all washer types, including front load, top load, and high-efficiency (HE) machines; Completely safe for septic systems and won’t harm plumbing
- Easy, Hassle-Free Cleaning: Just drop a tablet in and run a cycle - no scrubbing or extra steps required. Keeps your washer fresh and pet-hair free with minimal effort
Start with the basic footprint. A side-by-side washer and dryer usually need roughly 56 to 60 inches of width, 32 to 36 inches of depth, and enough rear clearance for hoses, venting, and electrical connections. Stacked pairs often need about 27 to 30 inches of width and 75 to 80 inches of height, depending on the model and stacking kit. Always follow the manufacturer’s clearances because vent bends, door swing, and service access can change the real required space.
For pet owners, we also like a washable landing zone near the machines. That can be a 24-inch-deep counter, a utility sink, a hanging rail, open towel cubbies, a divided hamper area, and wall hooks for leashes, harnesses, and washable mats. If the home has space, a combined pet-wash and laundry zone can keep mud out of bathrooms and kitchens.
Drainage and Shutoffs
Pet hair can collect in standpipes, pump filters, and drain lines. The washer standpipe and trap must be properly sized and installed to local code. We also want shutoff valves that are visible and reachable without moving stacked machines or removing cabinetry.
Use stainless braided hoses, not old rubber hoses, and replace aging hoses proactively. For upstairs laundry rooms or finished spaces below, an automatic leak shutoff is a smart upgrade. It is usually a small cost compared with drywall, flooring, ceiling, and insulation repairs after a hose failure.
Electrical Protection
Modern laundry areas may require GFCI protection, AFCI protection, or both, depending on location, circuit type, and adopted local code. Electric dryers also need the correct 240-volt circuit and receptacle. Gas dryers require proper gas piping, shutoff, combustion air, and code-compliant venting.
This is not the place to improvise with extension cords or undersized circuits. Frequent pet laundry means the washer and dryer run more hours, and nuisance trips or overheated connections need to be addressed properly.

Dryer Venting
Dryer venting is a major pet-household issue. Hair and lint load the system faster than in a pet-free home. Keep vent runs short and straight. Every elbow adds restriction, and long ducts increase drying time, lint buildup, and maintenance needs.
Dryers must vent to the exterior, not into an attic, crawlspace, garage, or wall cavity. Use smooth metal duct where required and keep the exterior termination accessible for cleaning. Clean the lint trap every load, and clean the dryer vent at least annually. In homes with several pets, schedule it sooner if dry times increase.
Flooring, Waterproofing, and Vibration
For pet-friendly laundry rooms, we prefer durable, washable floors: porcelain tile, luxury vinyl plank rated for wet areas, sheet vinyl, or sealed concrete in utility spaces. Avoid moisture-sensitive flooring under laundry equipment unless the full assembly is designed for wet service.

- MULTI-ACTION MACHINE CARE BOOST: Our upgraded pet hair dissolver for washing machines is designed to help break down pet hair buildup more effectively during high-heat cleaning cycles. Under tested conditions, it helps dissolve up to 96.7% of pet hair while also helping descale residue and deodorize the drum. Now upgraded from 75 g to 100 g per sachet, it delivers more product per use for deeper washer care in pet hair homes.
- DEEP-CLEAN WITH TUB/SELF-CLEAN CYCLE: For best results, add the sachet of this hair dissolving laundry detergent directly to an empty drum and run Self / Tub Clean Mode using the hottest, longest compatible cycle (194°F+). High heat helps activate the hair dissolving laundry detergent formula so it can work more effectively on built-up hair residue, grime, and odor inside the washer.
- GENTLE FORMULA FOR WASHER CARE: Designed as a specialized pet hair dissolver for washing machine care, this formula may also be used on durable, machine-washable pet-care items that are compatible with the recommended wash conditions. Not recommended for cotton, linen, silk, wool, or delicate fabrics prone to fading. Avoid use on items labeled for cold-water wash only to help prevent damage or discoloration.
- FIRST USE DEEP CLEAN: For best results, use 2 sachets for the first application or for heavier buildup, including washer drum deep cleaning. Use 1 sachet for routine washer maintenance. A follow-up rinse cycle may help clear loosened residue after the first use.
- EXTENDED SUPPLY, CONSISTENT RESULTS: Rely on our pet hair dissolver for washing machine care as a simple month-by-month routine, with 6 pre-measured sachets (100g) providing a ready supply for up to half a year so you never run out mid-shed season, supporting steady hair dissolving laundry detergent performance for pet parents who prefer predictable, low-effort maintenance.
Second-floor laundry needs extra attention. Heavy wet pet bedding can create vibration and out-of-balance loads. The floor should be level, the machines correctly installed, and the stacking kit manufacturer-approved. Anti-vibration pads can help in some conditions, but they should not be used to compensate for a weak floor, poor leveling, or the wrong installation.
2026 Costs: Appliance, Hookup, and Laundry Room Budget
A pet-friendly laundry upgrade can be as simple as replacing a washer or as involved as building a new laundry room. The cost difference is driven by how far the new location is from water, drain, electrical, gas, and exterior vent access.
| Project Scope | Typical 2026 Cost Range | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Budget washer purchase | $350-$550 | Usually basic top-load models; fewer pet-specific features. |
| Mid-range washer purchase | $500-$900 | Better cycles, capacity, and efficiency options. |
| Premium or pet-specific washer | $800-$1,600+ | Hair filters, steam/sanitize, larger capacity, premium finishes. |
| Washer/dryer pair | $1,500-$3,500+ | Depends heavily on brand, capacity, gas vs. electric, and features. |
| Simple installation with existing hookups | $50-$300 | Appliance set-in, connection, leveling, and haul-away may vary. |
| Typical washer/dryer installation | About $750 average | Minor adjustments, parts, and labor can raise the total. |
| Complex installation before major remodel | Up to about $2,000 | May include vent, outlet, drain, or access corrections. |
| Adding washer/dryer hookups | $1,000-$2,500 | Full laundry setup when water, drain, and power are not already present. |
| Moving hookups short distance | $500-$2,000 | Common within the same room or nearby wall. |
| Relocating laundry to new area | $1,200-$5,000 plumbing alone | Upstairs, basement, garage, or new-room moves cost more. |
| Laundry room remodel or creation | $8,000-$30,000 | Full finishes, cabinets, sink, flooring, electrical, venting, and plumbing. |
| Laundry room addition planning midpoint | About $250 per sq. ft. | Common planning range is roughly $140-$300 per sq. ft. |
Common adders include permits at $25 to $500 depending on jurisdiction and scope, a new outlet at $100 to $450, a new drain line at $225 to $1,840, and dryer vent installation at $140 to $600. Leak detectors, automatic shutoffs, cabinetry, utility sinks, smart controls, and pet-wash features can add roughly $50 to $1,000 or more.
Pet-specific cost drivers include larger-capacity machines, pet hair filter features, steam or sanitize options, more frequent filter replacement or maintenance, dryer vent cleaning, waterproof flooring, stronger subfloor planning, and added storage for towels, detergents, grooming tools, and bedding.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to Wash Pet Bedding Without Ruining the Machine
The best washer will last longer if you keep bulk hair out of it. We see fewer service issues when homeowners treat pet laundry as a separate workflow instead of tossing everything straight into the drum.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Before washing, shake items outside when practical. Vacuum heavy hair from beds and throws. If the care label allows it, run a 10-minute no-heat dryer tumble or air-fluff cycle before washing. Clean the lint trap immediately afterward. This step can remove a surprising amount of loose hair before water pushes it toward the washer filter and drain.
Use mesh laundry bags for small pet items, toy covers, washable collars, and small mats. Do not overload bulky beds. If the bed cannot roll, fold, and move freely, it is too large for that washer. Overloading reduces cleaning, leaves detergent residue, and can create violent spin cycles.
Use the right detergent amount. More detergent does not mean cleaner pet bedding. Excess detergent holds odor, traps residue, and makes rinsing harder. Use extra rinse for dander-heavy or odor-heavy loads. Run a washer clean cycle monthly in pet-heavy homes, and inspect the gasket, detergent drawer, pump filter, and door glass for hair buildup.
When to DIY and When to Hire a Pro
Some laundry upgrades are reasonable for a careful homeowner. Others involve plumbing, electrical, gas, venting, framing, waterproofing, or permit requirements. The line is not whether the work looks simple; it is whether a failure can flood the house, start a fire, or violate code.

- Adding or relocating washer hookups.
- Installing a laundry closet or moving laundry upstairs.
- Running a new 120-volt laundry circuit or 240-volt dryer circuit.
- Adding or moving gas service for a dryer.
- Installing or correcting dryer venting to the exterior.
- Adding a floor drain, drain pan, or automatic leak shutoff in a finished space.
- Repairing subfloor water damage or reinforcing a floor for second-story laundry.
- Building a combined pet-wash and laundry room with waterproof finishes.
Permits vary by city and county, but plumbing relocation, electrical circuits, gas piping, structural changes, and exterior vent penetrations often require approval. In a remodel, we prefer to settle the appliance model early because drain location, outlet height, vent path, door swing, and cabinet clearances all depend on the actual machines.
Our Practical Buying Checklist
Before you order, measure the space, confirm the utilities, and check service access. Then choose the washer that matches your pets and your laundry habits.
- One small pet, light shedding: A 4.5 cubic foot ENERGY STAR front loader with extra rinse is usually enough.
- Multiple cats or medium dogs: Prioritize steam/allergen cycle, accessible pump filter, and 4.8 cubic feet or more.
- Large dogs or washable beds: Choose 5.0 to 5.5 cubic feet, bulky bedding cycle, high spin speed, and a dryer with enough drum room.
- Heavy shedding: Strongly consider a pet-hair filter washer or a dryer-first hair removal routine.
- Second-floor laundry: Add leak protection, confirm floor stiffness, use manufacturer-approved stacking parts, and keep shutoffs accessible.
- Laundry closet: Verify door clearance, vent route, drain access, and filter access before cabinetry is built.
The right washer can make pet laundry easier, but the right room keeps the home protected. For pet owners, we build laundry spaces like working rooms: durable floor, reachable shutoffs, cleanable filters, good venting, useful storage, and enough clearance to service the machines. That is what keeps the system working after the first year, not just the first week.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best washing machine for pet hair in 2026?
For heavy pet hair, a washer with a built-in pet hair filter, such as Maytag’s Pet Pro line, is one of the strongest dedicated choices. For overall efficiency, a 4.5 to 5.5 cubic foot ENERGY STAR front loader with extra rinse, steam or allergen cycle, and accessible filter maintenance is also a strong option.
Do pet hair washing machines really work?
They help, but they are not magic. A dedicated hair filter or strong rinse cycle can reduce hair left on fabrics and protect the drain system, but you should still shake or vacuum bedding first and use a dryer air-fluff step when the care label allows it.
What washer size do I need for dog beds?
Most pet households should look at 4.5 to 5.5 cubic feet. For large washable dog beds, 5.0 cubic feet or more is usually the safer target. The bed needs room to move freely; if it is packed tight, it will not clean or rinse properly.
Is a front-load or top-load washer better for pet laundry?
Front-load ENERGY STAR washers are usually better for frequent pet laundry because they use less water and energy and extract more water during spin. Large top loaders can still be useful for bulky utility loads, especially when ease of loading and tub size matter.
How much does it cost to add washer and dryer hookups?
In 2026, adding washer and dryer hookups commonly runs about $1,000 to $2,500 for a full setup. Moving hookups a short distance may cost $500 to $2,000, while relocating laundry to a new room can run $1,200 to $5,000 for plumbing relocation alone before finish work.
How often should pet owners clean washer and dryer filters?
Clean the dryer lint trap every load. In pet-heavy homes, inspect the washer gasket and accessible drain pump filter monthly, run the washer clean cycle monthly, and clean the dryer vent at least annually or sooner if drying times increase.
