The best stand for a washing machine depends on the washer type, the floor, the laundry room layout, and how much height you actually need. For most current front-load washers, the best first choice is the matching OEM pedestal from the appliance manufacturer. It bolts to the machine correctly, raises the door into a more comfortable range, usually adds drawer storage, and avoids many of the vibration and warranty questions that come with universal bases.
That does not mean every laundry room needs a $300 pedestal. A heavy-duty steel universal stand can make sense for a budget laundry area, rental property, basement, or compact washer. A custom framed platform can be the right answer in a built-in laundry room, but only if it is built like a structural cabinet, not like a hollow box. pedestal washers are another category entirely: they raise the main washer while adding a small second washer underneath.
On our job sites, we treat washer stands as part appliance accessory, part construction detail. A raised washer changes hose reach, drain hose geometry, door swing, flood risk, vibration behavior, and service access. Those details matter more than the biggest advertised load rating on the box.
Quick Answer: The Best Washing Machine Stand by Situation
If you have a modern front-load washer, start with the manufacturer’s matching pedestal. Most OEM laundry pedestals raise the machine about 10 to 16 inches and cost about $249 to $429 each at national retailers in 2026. They are usually the cleanest choice for fit, fastening, finish color, drawer clearance, and long-term service.

Avoid light, wobbly bases with tiny feet or free-rolling casters under a full-size front-load washer.
If you have a top-load washer, do not raise it much. Top-load machines already require overhead lid access, and lifting them too high makes loading awkward while increasing instability risk. For top-loaders, anti-vibration pads or a very low riser are usually safer than a tall pedestal.
If you are renovating a laundry room, a custom platform can be excellent, but only when it includes blocking, structural fastening, sealed surfaces, moisture protection, access panels, and enough clearance to remove the washer later.
Comparison Table: Washing Machine Stand Options
| Stand type | Best for | Typical 2026 cost | Common height | Key concern |
|---|---|---|---|---|

| Budget adjustable universal base | Basements, rentals, light-duty use | $30 to $100 | Often 4 to 12 inches | Vibration and frame rigidity |
| Midrange steel universal pedestal | Budget height gain for full-size machines | $100 to $220 | Often 8 to 16 inches | Footprint compatibility and leveling |
| Custom built platform | Finished laundry rooms and built-ins | $300 to $1,500+ installed | Custom, often 8 to 18 inches | Water protection and service access |
| Pedestal washer | Premium laundry rooms needing a second small washer | $688 to $849 | Similar to appliance pedestal | Brand compatibility, utility needs, cost |
What Makes a Washing Machine Stand Good
A washer stand has one hard job: hold a heavy appliance steady while it fills with water, agitates, drains, and spins at high speed. Static load ratings do not tell the whole story. A front-load washer during spin can punish a weak base with side-to-side movement, racking, and walking.

We look for six things before recommending a stand: model compatibility, wide stance, rigid frame, secure fastening, adjustable leveling, and access to plumbing. A stand that is strong vertically but weak laterally is not a good stand.
Compatibility matters more than advertised capacity
Many universal stands advertise load ratings of several hundred pounds. That sounds reassuring, but the stand still has to match the washer footprint. A typical full-size washer is roughly 27 inches wide, with depths often around 30 to 34 inches depending on the model and door shape. Compact washers may be closer to 24 inches wide.
Measure the washer feet, not just the cabinet. The stand must support the actual contact points. If the feet land near the edge of an adjustable rail, or if the frame twists when tightened, the base is not appropriate for a high-speed washer.
Leveling is not optional
A washer pedestal should be leveled before the washer goes on it. Then the washer should be leveled again after it is mounted. After that, run a rinse and spin cycle with a real test load and recheck movement. Jam nuts on leveling feet should be tightened after adjustment. Skipping that step is one of the easiest ways to create noise, vibration, and floor damage.

Storage should fit real laundry supplies
Pedestal drawers are useful, but check the inside drawer height before buying. Some drawers are too shallow for bulk detergent containers. If storage is your main reason for buying a pedestal, measure your tallest bottle, pods container, brush, lint tools, and spare hoses before assuming everything will fit.
Best Overall: OEM Pedestal for a Front-Load Washer
For a front-load washer, the matching OEM pedestal is usually the best stand. It is designed for that appliance series, uses the intended fastening points, and keeps the machine at a height the manufacturer expects. That matters when the washer weighs 200 pounds or more and spins hard enough to expose every weakness in the floor and base.
Most OEM pedestals raise the washer roughly 10 to 16 inches. That puts the door opening closer to waist height for many adults and reduces bending when loading towels, jeans, bedding, and wet clothes. At 2026 pricing, expect about $249 to $429 per pedestal, with many common appliance-brand models landing around $250 to $350. Premium finishes and newer product lines can push higher.
The main downside is cost. A pair of pedestals for a washer and dryer can run $500 to $850 before installation. Still, for a finished laundry room with a matched front-load pair, that cost is often easier to justify than living with a vibrating universal stand or rebuilding around the wrong height later.
When an OEM pedestal is the right pick
Choose an OEM pedestal when the washer is a current or recent front-load model, the manufacturer lists a compatible pedestal, you want drawer storage, and the laundry room floor is level and solid. It is also the best route when the washer is under warranty and you want to avoid arguments about unsupported installation.
When to skip it
Skip the OEM pedestal if the washer is a top-load model, if the laundry closet does not have enough height, if the drawer will hit trim or a door casing, or if the extra height makes the detergent drawer or controls uncomfortable. Also skip it if the washer sits in a drain pan that will no longer fit once the pedestal footprint is added.
Best Budget Choice: Heavy-Duty Universal Steel Stand
A universal steel stand can work well when budget matters or when the washer does not have a matching pedestal available. The best versions are not the cheapest adjustable frames online. Look for heavy-gauge steel, a broad footprint, cross-bracing, solid leveling feet, anti-slip pads, and a published size range that matches the washer’s feet.
Rank #2
- Universal Compatibility: The top size of the laundry pedestal is 29 inches * 29 inches, which is suitable for most washers and dryers on the market. Equipped with a bottom storage cabinet, it is convenient to store all laundry necessities.
- Solid Structure and Safety: The base is supported by a heavy-duty steel frame that can withstand up to 700 pounds to ensure the safety of your machine. The stable structure minimizes the vibration and noise generated by the washing machine, providing a quiet laundry environment.
- Telescopic Laundry Basket Rack: The Solidee washer and dryer stand is equipped with a telescopic laundry basket rack, which can free your hands and allow you to comfortably pick up and put clothes.
- Four Panel Corner Design: You can freely install four corners according to your needs. The corner design can ensure that your various machines will not slip and provide safety.
- Ergonomic Design: Say goodbye to back fatigue. The laundry pedestal raises your washing machine and dryer by 22 inches, making it easier for you to load and unload clothes without bending over. And it is equipped with 4 adjustable height table legs, which can be adjusted to different heights according to needs.
Budget adjustable bases commonly cost about $30 to $100 online. Midrange steel universal pedestals and risers usually run about $100 to $220. The difference is often visible in the frame: welded construction or thicker bolted steel, better leveling feet, powder-coated finish, side rails, and sometimes an included drip tray.

Be cautious with caster bases. A washing machine is not a storage bin. Even locking casters can introduce movement and height under a machine that needs stable contact with the floor. For full-size front-load washers, we prefer fixed leveling feet over rolling wheels.
Universal stand buying checklist
- Confirm the washer foot spacing, width, depth, and loaded weight.
- Choose a stand with a wide stance and minimal frame flex.
- Use fixed leveling feet, not free-rolling casters.
- Look for anti-slip pads at the washer feet and floor contact points.
- Avoid stands that rely only on plastic corner blocks for stiffness.
- Check that the stand does not block a drain pan, shutoff valve, outlet, or cleanout.
For a basement washer on concrete, a good steel riser can be practical. For a second-floor laundry room over wood framing, we are more selective. Floor deflection, vibration transfer, and leak protection matter much more upstairs.
Best Built-In Option: Custom Framed Laundry Platform
A custom platform can look better than a metal pedestal and can solve problems that off-the-shelf stands cannot. We use custom platforms in laundry rooms where the owner wants a continuous counter, toe-kick storage, built-in cabinetry, or a raised pair that aligns cleanly with surrounding millwork.
The cost range is wider: roughly $300 to $1,500 or more installed. A simple unfinished platform in a utility space may be near the low end. A finished platform with cabinet panels, waterproofing, access doors, trim, drain pan integration, and paint-grade or stain-grade finish can move toward the high end quickly.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →The mistake to avoid is building a pretty box that is not stiff. A washer platform needs racking resistance. It should be tied together with structural framing, blocked properly, fastened to appropriate surfaces, and skinned or braced so it does not sway. Horizontal weight capacity is easy; spin-cycle movement is the test.
Construction details we want to see
For a full-size washer and dryer platform, we want a rigid frame, moisture-resistant materials where appropriate, sealed top surfaces, a plan for leaks, and removable access where plumbing or electrical connections sit behind the machines. If the platform is built over a pan or waterproofed recess, the finished height must still allow the appliances to slide out for service.
Do not trap the machines. A permanent built-in that requires removing trim, cabinets, or doors every time the washer needs service is not good construction. Leave clearance for door swing, detergent drawer pull-out, dryer vent radius, supply hoses, drain hose, electrical cord, and future appliance replacement.
Best Premium Choice: Pedestal Washer
A pedestal washer is not just a stand. It is a compact secondary washing machine installed under the main washer. This option makes sense for homeowners who frequently wash small separate loads: baby clothes, delicates, workout gear, cleaning rags, or items that should not share a full load.

That is a large jump from a simple riser, but it adds function instead of just height. It can also complicate installation because compatibility, electrical needs, water connections, drain routing, and service access all matter.

- 🔹 Fits Most Washer & Dryer Sets – Full Top Dimensions: Designed as a universal washer and dryer pedestal for side-by-side front load units, including LG, Samsung, Whirlpool. Full-width platform with 58.1" x 29.1" usable top area—built to match most U.S. laundry appliances.
- 🔹 Heavy-Duty Support for Everyday Use: Steel frame supports up to 800 lbs, keeping machines steady even on max spin cycles. A reliable washer dryer stand that’s made for long-term durability in real-life laundry rooms.
- 🔹 Expandable Shelf for Easy Transfers: The pull-out center tray makes loading and unloading laundry easier—place clothes temporarily before moving them to the dryer or basket. Slides out smoothly and disappears when not in use. A true workflow upgrade most pedestals lack.
- 🔹 Smart Storage That Keeps Laundry Flowing: Center pull-out drawer holds detergents, dryer sheets, and cleaning supplies—all within easy reach. Two open side compartments fit standard laundry baskets, keeping dirty and clean loads separated and organized.
- 🔹 Ergonomic Height That Meets Code: Raises appliances by 18.7 inches—comfortable for back-friendly loading, and compatible with common dryer elevation code requirements in U.S. homes with raised floors or garages. Water-resistant top is easy to clean.
We would not recommend a pedestal washer just to raise the machine. Buy it because the second wash tub solves a real laundry problem. If you only want better loading height and storage, an OEM drawer pedestal is usually the cleaner purchase.
Washer Stand Costs in 2026
For most homeowners, the stand itself is only part of the cost. Labor, stairs, moving appliances, correcting an unlevel floor, adding flood protection, or changing plumbing can matter more than the price tag on the pedestal.
| Project item | Typical 2026 cost | What changes the price |
|---|---|---|
| Budget universal stand | $30 to $100 | Steel gauge, size range, pads, casters, advertised capacity |
| Midrange universal pedestal | $100 to $220 | Welded frame, leveling feet, drip tray, powder-coated steel |
| OEM pedestal | $249 to $429 each | Brand, finish, drawer, width, promotions |
| Pedestal washer | $688 to $849 | Brand compatibility, utility connections, appliance package |
| Basic professional pedestal install | $110 to $250 | Stairs, tight closet, disconnect/reconnect, leveling, haul-away |
| Custom platform | $300 to $1,500+ | Carpentry, waterproofing, finish, access panels, pan integration |
| Full washer/dryer installation or relocation | $850 to $2,500 | Plumbing, venting, electrical, gas, finished-wall repair |
A simple pedestal install is usually a handyman or appliance-install task. A laundry-room relocation is a different project. Once you are adding a standpipe, laundry box, 120V or 240V circuit, gas line, dryer vent, floor drain, or finished-wall repair, the budget moves from accessory installation into remodel territory.
Measurements to Take Before You Buy
Measure the entire laundry zone before ordering a stand. The appliance footprint is only the starting point. We measure width, depth, height, door swing, detergent drawer travel, dryer vent path, standpipe location, supply valve location, outlet location, drain pan size, baseboards, trim, and the path for future service removal.
For a side-by-side front-load pair, remember that two pedestals affect the whole layout. A 15-inch lift may feel good at the washer door, but it may push dryer controls too high for a shorter user. The right height is personal. Check the final door, controls, and detergent drawer height against the people who use the room most.
Watch the drain hose
Raising the washer changes the drain hose position. The hose should not be pulled tight, kinked, crushed behind the machine, or inserted incorrectly into the standpipe. The connection should remain visible enough to inspect. If the stand makes the drain arrangement worse, it is the wrong stand or the plumbing needs adjustment.
Keep shutoffs accessible
Washer shutoff valves should be reachable without dismantling the laundry room. This is especially important upstairs. In a leak, the difference between accessible valves and buried valves can be thousands of dollars in water damage.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteSafety, Flood Protection, and Code Notes
A washing machine stand usually does not require a permit by itself when you are simply adding a compatible pedestal and reconnecting existing hoses. That changes if the work includes new plumbing, a relocated standpipe, a new laundry box, a floor drain, a gas line, new electrical circuits, or wall repair tied to utility changes. Local requirements vary, so permit questions should be checked with the local building department before work starts.
For second-floor laundry rooms, we strongly recommend thinking beyond minimum code. Use a drain pan or waterproofed recess where practical, a leak detector, braided stainless supply hoses, accessible shutoff valves, water-resistant flooring details, and a clear plan for overflow. A raised washer can make a leak harder to notice if the base blocks the view of the pan or hose connections.
Also consider floor condition. A stand will not fix a bouncy floor. If the washer already walks, shakes the room, or causes trim and doors to rattle, adding height can make the symptom worse. The floor may need leveling, framing evaluation, subfloor fastening, or appliance replacement before a pedestal makes sense.
When to DIY vs When to Hire a Pro
DIY installation is reasonable when the pedestal is manufacturer-approved, the laundry area is open, the floor is level, the washer can be moved safely, and no plumbing, electrical, venting, or gas work is involved. Even then, plan for two capable adults. A full-size washer is heavy, awkward, and easy to damage if tipped or dragged carelessly.

Set aside 1 to 3 hours for a straightforward pedestal installation. That includes disconnecting the washer, moving it, assembling the pedestal if needed, leveling the pedestal, mounting the washer, reconnecting hoses, checking for leaks, running a test cycle, and rechecking level.
Hire a pro when the machines are stacked, located in a tight closet, installed upstairs, connected to gas, difficult to move, sitting on an uneven floor, or tied into a drain pan that may need modification. Also hire help for custom platforms and any project involving new hookups. Basic professional pedestal installation commonly runs about $110 to $250 in many US metros. That is money well spent if it prevents a damaged floor, broken valve, kinked drain, or unsafe lift.
Our Practical Recommendation
For a current front-load washer, buy the matching OEM pedestal unless there is a clear reason not to. It is the most reliable choice for fit, fastening, storage, and service expectations. For a budget setup, use a rigid steel universal stand with fixed leveling feet and a verified footprint. For a finished laundry remodel, build a custom platform only if it is designed for vibration, water exposure, and future service access. For a top-load washer, keep it low or skip the stand altogether.
The right washing machine stand should make laundry easier without creating a service problem, vibration problem, or leak problem. Measure first, choose the stand based on the appliance and floor, and treat the final installation like part of the room, not just an accessory under the machine.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is a washing machine stand worth it?
Yes, for many front-load washers. A good stand or pedestal raises the door about 10 to 16 inches, reduces bending, and may add storage. It is not worth it if it makes the washer unstable, blocks plumbing access, conflicts with a drain pan, or raises controls too high.
Can you put any washing machine on a pedestal?
No. OEM pedestals are model-specific, and universal stands still need to match the washer footprint, weight, and vibration behavior. Top-load washers usually should not be placed on tall pedestals because lid access becomes awkward and the higher center of gravity can increase instability.
How much does a washer pedestal cost in 2026?
An OEM appliance-brand pedestal typically costs about $249 to $429 each. Budget universal stands often cost $30 to $100, midrange steel risers run about $100 to $220, and pedestal washers cost about $688 to $849 because they include a small secondary washing machine.
Do I need a permit to install a washer stand?
Usually not if you are only adding a compatible pedestal and reconnecting existing hoses. A permit may be required if the project includes new plumbing, electrical work, a gas line, dryer vent changes, a relocated standpipe, or laundry-room remodeling. Local rules control.

The best choice is usually the matching OEM pedestal from the washer manufacturer. It is designed for the appliance’s fastening points, dimensions, drawer clearance, and expected vibration. A heavy-duty steel universal stand can work when compatibility is verified and the frame is rigid.
Can a washing machine pedestal cause vibration?
Yes. A weak, unlevel, or incompatible pedestal can increase vibration and allow the washer to walk during spin cycles. Level the pedestal first, mount the washer securely, level the washer again, tighten jam nuts, and test with a real spin cycle.
