Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →For most Fisher & Paykel dishwasher owners, the best detergent choice is a premium automatic dishwasher pod or tablet for convenience, and automatic dishwasher powder when you need tighter dose control. In real use, that usually means starting with Finish Quantum, Cascade Platinum, or Cascade Platinum Plus for full loads, then switching to powder if you have a DishDrawer, soft water, half loads, or recurring residue.
That answer is more useful than naming one universal winner because Fisher & Paykel machines are not all the same. A single DishDrawer has less wash volume than a conventional full-size dishwasher. A double DishDrawer can run one drawer at a time. A panel-ready built-in model may be installed with different drain routing than a standard front-control unit. Those details change how detergent behaves.
On our kitchen projects, we see detergent get blamed for problems that are really caused by hard water, an empty rinse-aid reservoir, a clogged filter, blocked spray-arm holes, low water temperature, poor loading, or drain water backing into the machine. Before buying a fifth box of pods, it is worth matching the detergent format to the appliance and confirming the basic system is working.
Best Overall Detergent Choice for Fisher & Paykel
The best starting point for a Fisher & Paykel dishwasher is a high-quality automatic dishwasher tablet or pod paired with rinse aid. For many US households in 2026, that means a premium pod in the Cascade Platinum/Platinum Plus or Finish Quantum category. These products are easy to use, strong on grease, and more forgiving when plates are scraped but not prewashed.

If you own a DishDrawer and run small loads often, powder is the most controllable option. Fisher & Paykel guidance varies by model, but one DishDrawer guide gives dosing examples of about 5 grams, or 1 teaspoon, for Fast and Delicate cycles and about 15 grams, or 1 tablespoon, for Normal and Heavy cycles per drawer. Other models show dispenser markings around 10 grams, 20 grams, and 30 grams. That spread is exactly why the model manual matters.
The practical rule is simple: use domestic automatic dishwasher detergent only, never hand dish soap, laundry detergent, or general household cleaner. Hand dish soap can foam heavily, leak from the drawer or door, and leave the homeowner with a cleanup that feels much bigger than the original dirty dishes.
Powder vs Pods vs Tablets vs Gel
Detergent format matters more in Fisher & Paykel machines than in many standard dishwashers because drawer volume, load size, and detergent placement can vary. Here is the contractor-level comparison we use when helping homeowners sort out recurring wash problems.

|---|---|---|---|
| Premium pods or tablets | Full loads, greasy dishes, convenience | $0.45 to $0.80+ | Strong starting point, but may be too much for light single-drawer loads |
| Mainstream pods or tablets | Normal family loads | $0.30 to $0.55 | Good balance of cleaning and convenience when rinse aid is used |
| Budget pacs | Light to moderate soil, cost control | $0.12 to $0.25 | Can be a good value, but hard water may expose weaker formulas |
| Powder | DishDrawer dosing, soft water, half loads | $0.05 to $0.20 | Best control; dose by drawer, cycle, soil level, and hardness |
| Gel | Lightly soiled loads, fragrance preference | $0.10 to $0.25 | Convenient, but often weaker on baked-on food and mineral film |
When pods make sense
Pods and tablets are the easiest recommendation for a busy household that runs full loads. Retail pricing changes constantly, but current mass-market pricing commonly puts Cascade Platinum or Platinum Plus packs around $19.94 to $24.94 for 47 to 62 count packs, while Finish Quantum 84-count packs have been seen around $22.94. The real number to watch is not the shelf price; it is the per-load cost.
If a pod costs $0.40 per load and saves you from rewashing dishes twice a week, it may be the cheaper option. A rewash uses water, electricity, time, and wear on the appliance. On a premium kitchen appliance, clean results are part of protecting the investment.
When powder is better
Powder is the better tool when your Fisher & Paykel has one drawer running at a time, when loads are light, or when soft water causes detergent residue. A single DishDrawer is not the same as a full tub packed after a dinner party. It may need less detergent, not a stronger one.
Powder also helps with troubleshooting because you can change one variable at a time. Use the same cycle, same load type, same scraping level, same rinse-aid setting, and adjust only the dose. If the result improves, you have learned something useful. If it does not, the problem may be water, loading, maintenance, or installation.

Where gels fit
Gel is convenient and inexpensive, with many products landing roughly between $0.10 and $0.25 per load. It can work for lightly soiled plates and glassware. We do not make it our first recommendation for Fisher & Paykel households dealing with hard water, baked-on food, greasy pans, or white mineral film. In those situations, powder or a high-quality pac usually gives you more cleaning power.

Best Detergent by Household Situation
The right detergent depends on what is happening in the kitchen. A retired couple running one single drawer every evening does not need the same setup as a family of five loading both drawers after dinner.
Best for most homes
Use a premium pod or tablet with rinse aid. Start with one pod for a full drawer or full tub and use Normal or Heavy for greasy dishes. If you have a double DishDrawer, remember that each drawer is its own wash compartment. Do not assume the detergent amount for a conventional dishwasher automatically applies to one drawer.
Best for DishDrawer owners
Use automatic dishwasher powder when you regularly run small loads. Start near the model manual’s lower dose for Fast, Delicate, or lightly soiled loads, and increase only if dishes are still dirty after the filter and spray arm are clean. If your manual gives markings of 10 grams, 20 grams, and 30 grams, treat those as boundaries, not a challenge to fill the cup every time.
Best for hard water
Use a premium pod or a carefully increased powder dose, keep rinse aid filled, and raise the rinse-aid setting if your model allows it. One Fisher & Paykel guide recommends a higher rinse-aid setting, such as setting 5, for hard-water performance. Hard water leaves minerals behind as water evaporates, so detergent alone is rarely the whole answer.
If glassware is cloudy, do not assume it is permanently etched. Mineral film can often be improved by cleaning buildup from the machine, using rinse aid, checking water temperature, and confirming the spray arms are actually moving water through clean holes.
Best for fragrance-sensitive households
Seventh Generation Free & Clear packs or powder are reasonable starting points. Current retail examples have shown Seventh Generation powder around $6.27 for 45 ounces, with gels around $6.87 to $9.18 for 42 to 70 ounces. These can be practical choices for households avoiding fragrance, but hard-water homes may still need rinse aid and periodic machine cleaning to keep performance close to premium pods.
Best budget choice
Warehouse and private-label pacs can be strong value when water quality is forgiving. Great Value 115-count pacs have been seen around $13.94, which can put the cost well below many premium brands. If dishes are coming out clean, dry, and odor-free, there is no construction-law reason to spend more. If you are rewashing regularly, the cheaper detergent may not actually be cheaper.
Rinse Aid Is Not Optional in Many Homes
Rinse aid is one of the most misunderstood parts of dishwasher performance. It helps water sheet off dishes instead of clinging in droplets. That improves drying and reduces streaks, especially on glass, stainless flatware, and plastics.
Fisher & Paykel sells branded dishwasher rinse aid in the US, listed at $28.99 on its accessory page. That does not mean every homeowner must buy only the Fisher & Paykel bottle unless a specific model document says so. In most cases, rinse aid is a maintenance consumable, like dishwasher detergent. Mainstream rinse aids are widely available at lower prices, but the key is to keep the dispenser filled and adjusted properly.
If dishes are wet at the end of the cycle, first check whether rinse aid is empty. Then check the rinse-aid setting, selected cycle, and loading pattern. Plastics will almost always dry worse than glass and ceramic because they do not hold heat the same way. That is not a detergent failure.

How to Dose Detergent in a Fisher & Paykel DishDrawer
DishDrawer dosing should be intentional. The smaller wash chamber is one of the strengths of the design, but it also means a one-size detergent habit can cause problems.
Use these starting points, then verify against your exact manual:
- Fast or Delicate cycle: about 5 grams, or 1 teaspoon, in some DishDrawer guidance.
- Normal or Heavy cycle: about 15 grams, or 1 tablespoon, in some DishDrawer guidance.
- Models with dispenser markings: use the 10 gram, 20 gram, and 30 gram marks as model-specific reference points.
- Single drawer, soft water, light soil: use less detergent.
- Hard water, greasy dishes, heavy soil: use more detergent within the manual’s limits.
Newer Fisher & Paykel guidance allows tablets in the cutlery basket or tablet tray on applicable models. Older DishDrawer guidance may specify powdered detergent in the dispenser. That is not a contradiction worth guessing through. Check the manual for the model number on your machine, especially if you inherited the appliance with the home.
Do not place loose powder in the bottom of the drawer unless your model instructions specifically allow it. Use the dispenser as intended so detergent releases at the right part of the cycle.
When Detergent Is Not the Real Problem
On remodels and service calls, we see several dishwasher complaints that sound like detergent trouble but are actually system trouble. A dishwasher is part appliance, part plumbing fixture, and part electrical load. If any of those pieces are wrong, a premium detergent cannot cover it up forever.
Dirty dishes after a full cycle
Start with the filter and spray arm. A partially clogged filter slows water flow. A blocked spray-arm hole can leave one zone of the drawer untouched. Clean both before changing detergents. This takes about 10 to 20 minutes in most kitchens and costs nothing.
Cloudy glasses or white film
This is commonly hard-water mineral film. Try rinse aid, adjust the rinse-aid setting, use a stronger pod or slightly higher powder dose, and run a machine cleaner cycle if buildup is visible. Also confirm incoming hot water is appropriate. Many dishwashers perform best when supplied by a properly functioning hot-water system, though exact temperature requirements vary by model and local plumbing setup.
Musty odor or dirty water smell
If the drawer smells like drain water after a cycle, stop blaming detergent first. Check the drain hose routing, disposal connection, high loop, or air gap. Dishwasher drains need protection against backflow. Many jurisdictions require an air gap or approved high-loop arrangement, and local code should govern the final installation. A bad drain connection can send sink or disposal water back toward the dishwasher.
Pods not dissolving
Common causes include a blocked dispenser, low water temperature, incorrect tablet placement, overloaded racks, or a cycle too short for the detergent format. In a DishDrawer, tablet placement matters. If the manual calls for the cutlery basket or tablet tray, follow that path.

Installation Details That Affect Cleaning
Fisher & Paykel dishwashers are often installed in upgraded kitchens, custom cabinetry, and panel-ready layouts. The more custom the kitchen, the less forgiving the installation can be.
For a straightforward replacement where water, drain, power, and cabinet opening are already correct, basic professional installation may average around $194, with a common range of $144 to $264. For a broader project that includes the appliance, labor, new connections, cabinet work, or more involved setup, 2026 national cost sources commonly land around $1,000 to $1,500, with averages near $1,200.
The cost difference is not random. A replacement dishwasher slid into an existing opening is a different job from a panel-ready double DishDrawer in a new island with stone countertops, a disposal connection, an air-gap decision, and electrical updates.
| Install condition | Typical cost impact | Why it matters for detergent performance |
|---|---|---|
| Existing hookups in good condition | Lower end, often a few hundred dollars for labor | Less risk of drain or supply defects |
| New cabinet opening | Higher labor and finish cost | Clearances affect drawer movement and hose routing |
| Panel-ready Fisher & Paykel model | Higher carpentry coordination | Poor alignment can affect operation and service access |
| Dual DishDrawer drain routing | More plumbing detail | Bad routing can cause odor, standing water, or backflow |
| Air gap, disposal, or high-loop correction | Moderate added cost | Protects clean dishes from contaminated drain water |
| Dedicated circuit or GFCI update | Can require electrician and permit | Prevents nuisance electrical issues and code problems |
For remodels, decide the air-gap location, sink accessory holes, disposal connection, shutoff valve placement, panel-ready clearances, and electrical route before countertop fabrication. Once stone is cut and cabinets are finished, small dishwasher changes become expensive and awkward.
When to DIY and When to Hire a Pro
Most detergent and maintenance troubleshooting is safe for a homeowner. Installation and drain issues are where the line changes.
DIY is reasonable when
- You are comparing detergent types or dose amounts.
- You are filling or adjusting rinse aid according to the manual.
- You are cleaning the filter, spray arm, and visible mineral buildup.
- You are changing loading habits so dishes do not block spray patterns.
- You are checking whether a pod is placed where the manual says it belongs.
Give a detergent test at least three comparable loads. Use the same cycle, similar soil level, same rinse-aid setting, and similar loading. If you change five things at once, the result will not tell you much.
Hire a pro when
- The dishwasher smells like sewage or drain water after a completed cycle.
- Water remains in the drawer or tub after the cycle.
- The drain hose lacks a proper high loop or required air gap.
- The appliance trips a breaker or GFCI repeatedly.
- You are installing a panel-ready, integrated, or double DishDrawer model.
- Cabinetry, flooring, shutoff valves, disposal connections, or electrical work must be modified.
Permits and code requirements vary by city and county. In many areas, dishwasher work can touch plumbing, electrical, and inspection rules. Where an air gap is required, skipping it because the countertop hole is inconvenient is not a good trade. The cleanest kitchens are planned before finish materials go in.

- Run hot water at the sink before starting the dishwasher if your plumbing layout leaves cooled water in the line.
- Load dishes so water can reach every surface. Bowls should not nest. Tall items should not block the spray arm.
- Run a normal load with a premium pod or properly measured powder.
- Repeat with only one change: detergent type or detergent amount.
- If odor, standing water, or dirty-water smell persists, inspect drain routing and call a qualified pro if needed.
This is how we separate a detergent problem from a dishwasher problem. It is also how we avoid wasting $20 to $30 at a time on products that cannot solve a blocked spray arm or bad drain line.
Final Recommendation
For a Fisher & Paykel built-in dishwasher running full loads, start with a premium pod or tablet and keep rinse aid filled. For a DishDrawer, especially a single drawer or lightly loaded double-drawer setup, automatic dishwasher powder is often the smarter long-term choice because you can dose by drawer, soil level, water hardness, and cycle.
If you have hard water, do not judge any detergent without rinse aid and a clean machine. If you smell drain water, see standing water, or keep getting dirty dishes after basic maintenance, the fix may be plumbing or installation rather than detergent. A good detergent can only work inside a dishwasher that is loaded, maintained, and installed correctly.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use Cascade pods in a Fisher & Paykel DishDrawer?
Yes, if your model manual allows tablets or pods and you place them as directed, often in the cutlery basket or tablet tray on newer models. For light single-drawer loads or soft water, a full pod may be too much detergent, so powder can be easier to dose.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIs powder or tablets better for Fisher & Paykel dishwashers?
Tablets and pods are best for convenience and full loads. Powder is better for DishDrawer units, half loads, soft water, and troubleshooting because you can adjust the amount by cycle, soil level, and water hardness.
Why are my glasses cloudy after using a good detergent?
Cloudy glasses are often caused by hard-water mineral film, low rinse aid, too little detergent for the water hardness, low water temperature, or poor spray-arm flow. Clean the filter and spray arm, fill rinse aid, and adjust detergent dose before assuming the glass is permanently etched.
Do I have to use Fisher & Paykel rinse aid?
Use rinse aid if your manual calls for it, but the Fisher & Paykel-branded bottle is usually not the only practical option unless your specific model documentation says so. Fisher & Paykel’s US rinse aid has been listed at $28.99, while mainstream rinse aids are often cheaper.
Why does my Fisher & Paykel dishwasher smell like drain water?
That is often not a detergent issue. Check for standing water, clogged filters, and drain hose routing. A missing air gap, bad high loop, or incorrect disposal connection can allow dirty drain water or odors to affect the dishwasher.
