The reliable method is directional freezing: make the water freeze from the top down, then remove or discard the cloudy lower portion where trapped air and minerals collect. For most homeowners, the best value is a small hard-sided cooler or a directional clear-ice mold, not a plumbed appliance.
If you want clear cubes for weekend cocktails, budget roughly $15 to $80 and plan on 18 to 36 hours of freezer time per batch. If you are designing a home bar, outdoor kitchen, butler’s pantry, or remodeled kitchen around frequent entertaining, then an undercounter clear-ice machine may belong in the plan. That is a different conversation: water supply, drain, electrical, ventilation, cabinet opening, service access, and leak protection all matter.
On our job sites, we separate the question into two parts. First, can the homeowner get the ice quality they want with a freezer method? Second, if they want daily production or built-in convenience, can the room support the appliance correctly without creating a leak risk or service headache later?
The Short Answer: Use Directional Freezing
Cloudy ice usually comes from trapped air bubbles, minerals, and the way water freezes in a normal tray. A standard plastic tray freezes from the outside inward. As the water hardens from multiple sides, air and dissolved solids get trapped in the center. That is why a cube may look clear around the edges but cloudy in the middle.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDirectional freezing changes the geometry. You insulate the sides and bottom of the water container so the freezer attacks the exposed top first. As the ice forms downward, the clearer ice stays above and the cloudy water gets pushed into the unfrozen lower section. Stop the freeze before the whole container turns solid, dump the lower water, and you have a clear block that can be cut into cubes or spears.
Boiling water can remove some dissolved air, and filtered water can improve taste, but neither solves the core problem by itself. Distilled water in a normal tray can still freeze cloudy. Tap water in an insulated directional setup can freeze impressively clear. If your tap water tastes strongly of chlorine or has odors, use filtered tap water for flavor. For clarity, focus on insulation and freeze direction.

What You Need for the Cooler Method
The lowest-cost reliable method uses a small hard-sided cooler with the lid removed. The cooler acts like job-site insulation: it slows heat loss through the sides and bottom, so the exposed top freezes first.
Before buying anything, measure your freezer. This is where many failed attempts start. You need the cooler or mold to sit level with enough vertical clearance to slide it in and out without spilling. Many refrigerator freezers can handle a compact cooler in the 5- to 9-quart range, but the real measurement is your freezer’s usable interior height, depth, and shelf spacing.

A practical starter setup includes a small hard-sided cooler, filtered tap water, a rimmed pan or towel for handling, a serrated knife or ice pick, a cutting board, and sealed freezer storage containers. Expect to spend roughly $15 to $60 if you already own basic kitchen tools. If you add silicone cube molds or a purpose-built directional clear-ice tray, common consumer options run about $25 to $80. Premium bar-style systems with more capacity or stainless components can run $80 to $200 or more.
Basic Materials and Dimensions
For rocks glasses, a 2-inch cube is the most useful target. It looks substantial, fits many old fashioned glasses, and melts slower than small crescent or tray cubes because it has less exposed surface area for the same volume of ice. For Collins glasses, plan for spears about 1.25 to 1.5 inches wide and 4 to 5 inches tall, but check your glassware before cutting. A cube that looks good on a product page is not helpful if it wedges above the drink line.
Use a cooler that leaves room for at least 3 to 4 inches of water depth. That usually gives enough clear ice at the top to cut meaningful cubes while leaving the cloudy lower section behind. Do not fill to the brim. Water expands as it freezes, and you need space for handling.
Step-by-Step: Making Clear Ice in a Small Cooler
This is the method we recommend first because it is cheap, repeatable, and does not require plumbing or a new appliance.
1. Measure the Freezer and Choose the Container
Measure the freezer opening, shelf-to-shelf height, and the flat area where the cooler will sit. The cooler must sit level. If it sits tilted on a drawer rail or shelf lip, the block will freeze unevenly and may spill when you move it. A compact hard-sided cooler is easier to handle than a large one. Bigger is not always better because a fully frozen block can be heavy and awkward.
2. Fill with Filtered Tap Water
Fill the cooler with tap or filtered tap water. If taste matters, filtered water is worth using. If clarity is the only goal, the directional freeze matters more than whether the water was boiled. Leave the cooler lid off. The open top is the cold face; the insulated sides and bottom are what make the process work.
3. Freeze for 18 to 36 Hours
Place the cooler level in the freezer and freeze it uncovered for about 18 to 36 hours. The exact time depends on cooler size, water depth, freezer temperature, and how much clear ice you want. Start checking around 18 hours for a smaller container. The goal is a solid clear upper layer with liquid or slushy cloudy water below. If you freeze the entire cooler solid, you can still cut away the cloudy section, but the work is harder and the block is more likely to crack.

4. Temper the Block Before Removing and Cutting
Tempering means letting the ice rest briefly at room temperature so the surface warms slightly and internal stress relaxes. Give the cooler several minutes on the counter before removing the block. If the block does not release, do not fight it with sharp tools against the cooler wall. Let it sit a little longer or run a small amount of cool water around the outside of the cooler. Avoid hot water, which can shock the ice and increase cracking.
5. Drain or Cut Away the Cloudy Portion
If the bottom is still liquid, drain it off. If the bottom froze cloudy, trim that section away. Set the block on a stable cutting board over a towel. Score a line with a serrated knife, then tap along that line with a mallet or the back of a heavy utensil. The ice will usually split along the score. Work slowly. A 2-inch cube does not need perfect machine edges to look good in a glass.
6. Store the Cubes Dry
Put finished cubes in a sealed freezer container or food-safe bag for at least a few hours before serving. This gives exterior meltwater time to refreeze and keeps cubes dry and separate. If you cut and serve immediately, the surface can be wet and more prone to cracking when it hits room-temperature glassware or warmer liquid.
Why Clear Ice Cracks, Clouds, or Tastes Off
Most problems come from timing, temperature shock, or expecting water purity to do the work of insulation.
If the cube is cloudy in the middle, the water likely froze from too many directions or the whole container froze solid. Use a more insulated container, remove the lid, reduce water depth, or stop the freeze earlier. If the top is clear and the bottom is cloudy, the method is working; you just need to cut away the lower section.
Recommended Free Tools
If the block shatters when cut, it was probably too cold. Temper it for several minutes before cutting. The same applies before serving. A large cube straight from a very cold freezer can crack when dropped into a glass or hit with room-temperature liquid. Letting it sit briefly reduces that stress.
If the ice is clear but tastes stale, the issue is usually freezer odor or water quality. Store cubes in sealed containers, not open bins. Use filtered water if your tap water has chlorine notes. Clear ice improves appearance and dilution control; it does not automatically make poor-tasting water taste clean.
Clear Ice Options and 2026 Cost Comparison
The right choice depends on volume, space, and whether you are already opening walls or cabinets. For a homeowner making drinks a few times a month, the cooler method wins. For a family that wants everyday ice, a refrigerator icemaker or standard countertop unit may be more practical, even if the ice is not crystal clear. For a serious home bar, an undercounter machine can make sense when it is designed into the room from the start.
| Option | Typical 2026 Cost | Best For | Watchouts |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small cooler method | $15-$60 | Occasional clear cocktail cubes or spears | Requires freezer space, cutting, and 18-36 hours per batch |
| Directional clear-ice mold | $25-$80 common; $80-$200+ premium | Cleaner cube shapes with less cutting | Batch capacity is limited; measure freezer height first |
| Basic countertop ice maker | Retail range about $50-$2,000; many consumer units $100-$600 | Convenient daily ice without plumbing in many cases | Many make bullet or nugget ice, not true clear cocktail cubes |
| premium countertop nugget maker | Often about $145-$500+ | Soft nugget ice for sodas, water bottles, and casual drinks | Nugget ice is not clear cocktail ice and melts faster |
| Undercounter clear-ice machine | Commonly $500-$4,000+ for appliance | Home bars, entertaining kitchens, butler’s pantries | Needs planning for water, drain, power, ventilation, cabinetry, and service |
| Repair or replacement of icemaker | In-freezer replacement about $250-$600; freestanding units about $200-$1,500 | Existing appliance problems | Labor often runs about $75-$125 per hour, plus parts and access issues |
Professional appliance installation averages around $187 nationally in 2026, with common simple-install ranges around $131 to $270. That number is useful only for a basic appliance set-in. It does not cover complicated water-line routing, drain pumps, electrical updates, cabinet modifications, permit fees, or finish repairs. Refrigerator delivery and installation with icemaker-related water-line work is often budgeted around $150 to $200 before added plumbing scope.

Countertop Ice Makers: Read the Ice Type Before You Buy
A countertop ice maker can be useful, but do not assume portable means clear. Many countertop units make bullet ice: small hollow pieces that are convenient for daily use but usually cloudy. Nugget machines make chewable pellet-style ice, which is excellent for soft drinks and water bottles but not the same as a clear 2-inch cocktail cube.

If your goal is premium cocktail presentation, look for language that specifically says clear cubes or directional freezing, then verify the cube size and production method. A machine that produces 26 pounds of bullet ice per day may be great for a family cooler and completely wrong for an old fashioned glass.
Also check operating details. Countertop machines still need counter space, periodic draining, cleaning, and storage. Some are noisy enough to be annoying in an open kitchen. Others require manual water filling. For occasional cocktail ice, a $25 to $80 directional mold often gives better results than a much more expensive countertop machine that was designed for volume rather than clarity.
Built-In Clear-Ice Machines Are a Construction Decision
An undercounter clear-ice machine can be a strong feature in a home bar or entertaining kitchen, but it should be treated like a design appliance, not a late accessory. By the time countertops are templated, the cabinet opening, water supply, drain route, outlet location, door swing, toe-kick, and ventilation plan should already be resolved.
Water Supply and Shutoff
Most built-in ice machines need a cold-water supply with an accessible shutoff valve. The line material and connection method should match local code and the appliance manufacturer’s instructions. In remodels, the cost drivers are distance to the nearest cold-water line, access through cabinets or walls, whether the route crosses finished spaces, and whether the work requires opening drywall or flooring.
We prefer planning the shutoff where it can be reached without pulling half the room apart. Behind an appliance may be common, but accessible inside an adjacent sink base or service cabinet is often better when the layout allows it. Add a leak sensor or automatic shutoff near undercounter ice makers, behind refrigerators, under sinks, and anywhere a small leak could run into finished floors, basements, or ceilings below.
Drain: Gravity or Pump
Many clear-ice machines produce meltwater and need a drain. Some can use a gravity drain if the drain connection is lower and nearby. Others need a pump, especially when the machine is far from a floor drain or sink drain path. This detail can decide where the appliance belongs. A machine placed on the wrong wall may require extra parts, more noise, more maintenance, and a higher failure risk.
Ask three questions before committing: Where does the water go? Is the drain path accessible for service? What happens if the pump fails? Those answers matter more than the appliance’s front-panel finish.
Electrical, GFCI/AFCI, and Service Access
Undercounter machines need a properly located receptacle and may trigger GFCI or AFCI considerations depending on location, circuit, and local code adoption. Kitchens, bars, garages, basements, and outdoor-adjacent spaces are treated differently by code and inspectors. Do not bury the plug where the machine cannot be serviced. A serviceable appliance is cheaper to own.
Ventilation also matters. Some units vent at the front toe-kick; others have specific side, rear, or clearance requirements. Panel-ready models add another layer: door panel weight, hinge behavior, handle placement, adjacent pull clearance, and toe-kick alignment. A $3,000 appliance can look wrong if the cabinet opening is treated as an afterthought.

When to DIY and When to Hire a Pro
DIY is the right call when you want occasional clear ice, already have freezer space, and do not need daily production. A cooler, directional mold, cutting board, and sealed storage container solve the problem for most households. There is no permit, no water line, no drain, and no appliance service path to worry about.
Hire a pro when the work touches plumbing, electrical, cabinetry, drains, or finished surfaces. That includes adding a water line to a refrigerator, installing an undercounter ice maker, cutting cabinets for a new opening, adding a drain pump, or updating an outlet in a wet or bar area. The appliance may be simple; the surrounding conditions are what create risk.

Replacing an existing appliance in the same location may not require one. Adding a new water line, drain, receptacle, circuit, or built-in appliance during a remodel often can. Local plumbing and residential codes cover water supply, distribution, testing, and installation standards, and inspectors may have specific requirements for shutoffs, protection from contamination, drain connections, and electrical safety. For a kitchen or bar remodel, ask before walls close. It is cheaper to correct rough-in work than to open finished cabinetry later.
Planning Clear Ice Into a Remodel
For a remodel, start with the real use case. Occasional cocktails call for a mold. Daily family ice may point to a refrigerator icemaker or countertop machine. Entertaining-scale production may justify an undercounter clear-ice machine. Those are three different needs, and buying the most expensive appliance does not automatically solve the right problem.
For a home bar, we typically plan around glassware, traffic, and cleanup. A clear-ice machine near the bar sink can be efficient because water supply and drain routes are nearby. In a butler’s pantry, door swing and service access may matter more because the aisle is narrow. In an outdoor kitchen, climate, ventilation, water shutoff, winterization, and GFCI protection become part of the decision.
Do not forget storage. Clear ice machines make ice, but many homeowners still want a sealed bin or freezer space for specialty cubes, citrus wheels, or large-format ice made ahead of a party. If you use the cooler method, dedicate a freezer container so the finished cubes do not absorb food odors. If you install a machine, plan cleaning access and owner maintenance into the layout.
Best Cube Sizes for Drinks
A 2-inch cube is the standard workhorse for rocks glasses. It looks clean, chills well, and melts slower than a handful of small cubes because less surface area is exposed to the drink. For double old fashioned glasses, check the interior diameter; many glasses that look large outside have thick walls and a smaller usable opening.
For highballs and Collins drinks, spears are more practical. A spear around 1.25 to 1.5 inches wide and 4 to 5 inches tall fits many tall glasses, but measure your own. For wine, water, iced coffee, and everyday drinks, perfect clarity matters less than convenience. Nugget or standard ice may be the better choice.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the easiest way to make clear ice cubes at home?
Use a small hard-sided cooler with the lid removed. Fill it with tap or filtered water, freeze it level for about 18 to 36 hours, then drain or cut away the cloudy lower section. This directional freezing method is the most reliable low-cost option.
Do you need distilled or boiled water to make clear ice?
No. Filtered water can improve taste, but clarity mostly comes from freezing direction and insulation. Boiled or distilled water in a normal tray can still turn cloudy because air and minerals get trapped as the cube freezes from multiple sides.
How long does directional freezing take in a home freezer?
Most small cooler batches take about 18 to 36 hours. The timing depends on freezer temperature, cooler size, water depth, and desired cube thickness. Stop before the entire block freezes solid if you want the easiest cutting.
Is a clear ice maker worth it for a home bar?
It can be worth it for frequent entertaining, but not for occasional drinks. Undercounter clear-ice machines commonly cost about $500 to $4,000 or more before complex installation work. A directional mold or cooler is usually better value for light use.
Does an undercounter ice maker need a drain?
Many undercounter clear-ice machines need a drain for meltwater. Some can use a gravity drain, while others need a pump. The drain route should be planned before cabinetry and countertops are finalized.
What size clear ice cube is best for cocktails?
A 2-inch cube fits many rocks glasses and works well for whiskey, old fashioneds, and spirit-forward cocktails. For tall Collins or highball glasses, use spears around 1.25 to 1.5 inches wide and 4 to 5 inches tall, after checking your glass dimensions.
