Where Is It Appropriate to Use Armored Electrical Cable?

Armored cable is appropriate only when the exact type, its markings, the installation method, the environment, and the locally adopted electrical code all permit it. Here is how to tell Type AC from Type MC and where each applies.

Armored electrical cable is appropriate only when three things line up: the specific cable type is listed for the use, its markings and installation method suit the location, and the electrical code adopted where the work happens permits it. “Armored cable” is a family name rather than one product. Type AC and Type MC are built differently and are governed by different rules, so the first decision is identifying which one you have.

Start by identifying the cable type

Most confusion about armored cable comes from treating the term as one category. The construction difference is the starting point:

Feature Type AC Type MC
Metallic armor construction Flexible interlocked metallic armor Interlocking metal tape, or a smooth or corrugated metallic sheath
How code treats it A distinct cable type with its own rules A distinct cable type with its own rules, including a broader list of permitted uses
What to check first Jacket legend and the manufacturer’s listing for the intended use Jacket legend, listing, and any wet-location or temperature markings

Do not transfer a rule from one type to the other. A permitted use listed for Type MC does not automatically apply to Type AC, and the reverse is also true. Read the printed legend on the jacket and the manufacturer’s data, not the appearance of the armor alone.

Where Type MC is permitted under the code text

A 2025 NFPA code-development report (the CMP-6 preliminary first-revision report) lists Type MC for services, feeders, branch circuits, power, lighting, control, and signal circuits. Indoor and outdoor installations are both covered, as are exposed and concealed wiring. That text is a working draft, not the final 2026 code language, so use it to understand the categories and confirm the enforceable wording in the code your jurisdiction has adopted.

#1 Best Overall
HUANCHAIN 12/2 MC Cable 50FT Solid Copper Wire with Aluminum Armor
  • Product Specification: 12 AWG heavy duty metal cable 50ft with 3 solid cooper wires: 2 current-carrying wires and 1 ground wire; maximum temperature: dry 90℃/wet 75℃; voltage rating: 600V; UL listed
  • Safety & High Conductivity: Built with 12 gauge solid bare copper conductors, this mc cable ensures superior conductivity and higher current capacity; its enhanced corrosion resistance and heat dissipation outperform non-copper alternatives, guaranteeing safe and reliable operation
  • Sturdy and Easy Installation: This electrical wire has aluminum alloy armor, enables its deployment in terrible weather conditions; this kind of armor features corrosion resistant, be able to handle heat and humidity; it is easy to bend, simplifying the indoor and outdoor installation process for various wiring projects, conveniently and quickly
  • Common Applications: Suitable for exposed and concealed use in dry or wet locations, such as power distribution in high-risk areas like commercial buildings and factories; perfect for HVAC, lighting and branch circuits
  • Reliability: We represent high-quality products and excellent customer satisfaction, please purchase with confidence; please confirm the size and style is what your need before ordering

Some uses carry extra identification or code conditions even when the general category is permitted:

  • Direct burial: the cable must be identified for burial, and the code’s burial requirements apply.
  • Cable tray: tray use has its own identification requirements.
  • Hazardous (classified) locations: the general MC permission does not extend here; the code’s hazardous-location articles govern.

Outdoor installations

Outdoor use is within the categories the code text lists for Type MC, but it is conditional. The cable’s construction, its moisture and corrosion protection, and its markings determine whether a particular outdoor run is acceptable. Check the listing against the actual exposure: direct sunlight, standing water, soil contact, and chemical or salt-air corrosion are different conditions, and a product suitable for one may not suit another.

Wet and damp locations

Metal armor alone does not make a cable suitable for wet use. The code-development text ties wet-location use to conditions such as a corrosion-resistant jacket combined with moisture-impervious construction, or to conductors that are themselves rated for wet locations. UL’s Wire and Cable Application Guide explains that wet-location suitability and temperature ratings are shown through product or package markings. Before accepting a cable for a damp or wet location, look for:

  • A wet-location marking on the jacket or on the package or reel label.
  • The temperature rating printed with the cable, matched to the conditions where it will run.
  • A corrosion-resistant jacket where the location involves moisture, soil, or chemicals.
  • Written confirmation from the manufacturer that the listed construction covers the exact environment.

If the markings are missing or unclear, the cable is not established for that location, regardless of its armor.

Checklist before choosing armored cable

  • Confirm the type: Type AC or Type MC, read from the jacket legend and listing.
  • Confirm the use category: feeder, branch circuit, lighting, control, or signal, as permitted in the adopted code.
  • Describe the location precisely: dry, damp, wet, corrosive, sunlit, buried, or classified.
  • Check the markings: wet-location and temperature ratings for the actual conditions.
  • Check the installation method: exposed, concealed, tray, or direct burial, with any identification the code requires.
  • Check the accessories: fittings, support, and bonding must meet the code for the chosen cable.
  • Have the size and ampacity reviewed: conductor size, conductor material, and circuit conditions are project-specific.

Which code edition controls

NFPA identifies NFPA 70, National Electrical Code, 2026 edition, as its current edition, available in print and digital formats. NFPA states that the NEC is updated every three years. The NEC is a model code, though, and a jurisdiction becomes bound only when it adopts a specific edition and any local amendments. The authority having jurisdiction decides which text applies to a given installation. Confirm the adopted edition with your local building or electrical department before relying on any code text.

Many electricians and inspectors keep the NFPA 70 codebook on hand for this purpose. The 2026 edition is the reference to name when checking current language, but it should be cross-checked against the edition your jurisdiction enforces.

What this guidance does not settle

This article does not give cable sizing, ampacity, or conductor-material selection. Those depend on the circuit, the load, and the installation conditions, and they require project-specific code review. No prevalence, failure, or cost statistics for armored cable were located in the primary NFPA or UL sources reviewed, so this article makes no claim about how often armored cable fails or is misapplied.
