Which Patton 1500W Space Heater Do You Have? How to Identify the Model

A “Patton small 1500W” label does not identify a single heater. Patton has documented at least two different products rated at 1500 watts: the PUH680 utility heater and the PQH307-UM infrared quartz tower. They differ in controls, form, and safety instructions, so the model or SKU printed on your unit is the only reliable way to know which specifications and instructions apply.

Why brand and wattage are not enough

Both the PUH680 and the PQH307-UM are sold as 1500W Patton heaters, so “Patton” plus “1500W” matches more than one product. “Small” is not a model designation either. Older Patton heaters that were recalled decades ago were also described as small, which is covered in the recall section below. Until you read the model number, any voltage, clearance, or control description you find online may belong to a different heater.

How to find the model number

Patton states that the product SKU or model number can be found in three places. Check them in this order:

  1. Unplug the heater and turn it over. Look for a sticker on the underside of the enclosure.
  2. If that sticker is worn, painted over, or missing, check the product box.
  3. If you still have it, check the packing slip.
  4. Write down the number exactly, including letters and hyphens, such as PUH680 or PQH307-UM. Patton’s manual lookup page describes these locations, and you can compare your number to the manual listed for it.

If the label is unreadable and you have no box or slip, a clear photo of the nameplate, the controls, and the whole heater gives the best chance of a firm identification when you ask in a forum or contact the manufacturer.

Attribute PUH680 utility heater PQH307-UM infrared quartz tower
Heater type Utility heater Infrared quartz tower
Power rating 1500W 1500W
Electrical specification 120V AC, 60Hz, 12.5 amps (PUH680 manual) Not stated in the Home Depot listing
Dimensions Not stated in the PUH680 manual 24.5 inches (listed size, Home Depot listing)
Controls Thermostat and high/low selector (PUH680 manual) Manual controls (Home Depot listing)
Documented safety features Plug and clearance instructions, cord and plug shutdown rule (PUH680 manual) Overheat protection and tipping protection (Home Depot listing)

Neither source establishes which heater is better for a given job. Choose based on the heater you already own, or on the specific heating task you need to do.

If your heater is a PUH680

Electrical requirements

The PUH680 manual specifies 120V AC at 60Hz with a current draw of 12.5 amps. These are PUH680 values only. Do not assume another Patton heater uses the same electrical rating.

Clearance and use rules

The manual directs you to keep combustibles at least three feet from the front of the heater and away from its sides and rear. It also says to plug the heater directly into a wall receptacle. Stop using the heater if the cord or plug is damaged. Discontinue use if the plug or outlet is hot. The manual says not to attempt electrical or mechanical repairs yourself.

The 1984 and 1985 recall of the HF-10 and 201-7208

What the 1984 CPSC announcement covered

In 1984 the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced a recall of the Patton HF-10 and Sears 201-7208 heaters. The commission reported about 102,000 units involved. The recalled heaters were small plastic units with a slide-type switch on top and “Made in Hong Kong” printed on the bottom label. Those details are the main way to recognize a recalled unit.

What the 1985 reminder added

A 1985 CPSC reminder referred to more than sixty investigated fire incidents. It told consumers who still had these heaters to stop using them and unplug them from electrical outlets. The reminder continued to name only the HF-10 and 201-7208 models. It does not extend to the PUH680 or PQH307-UM, and it does not establish that every Patton heater is affected.

Checking your heater before use

  • Compare the model number to HF-10 and 201-7208. If it matches, follow the 1985 reminder and stop using the heater.
  • Check the underside label for “Made in Hong Kong” and a top slide switch. These are the recalled-era traits, but confirm the model number before deciding.
  • Inspect the cord and plug. Do not use a heater with damage.
  • Plug the heater directly into a wall receptacle.
  • For a PUH680, keep combustibles at least three feet from the front and clear of the sides and rear.
  • If the plug or outlet feels hot, stop using the heater.
  • Do not open the heater or attempt repairs.

The recall notices date from 1984 and 1985. Check the Consumer Product Safety Commission’s website for its current guidance before relying on either notice for safety decisions.

If you are shopping rather than identifying

This article does not confirm current availability, seller condition, or pricing for either model. Once you know your model, search for its exact number, such as “Patton PUH680 1500 watt utility heater,” rather than a general 1500W heater search. A different heater is not a direct replacement, even at the same wattage. Compare type, rating, electrical specification, clearance instructions, and the heating task you need the heater to do.

Patton’s instructions are the authority for any heater you own. Follow the manual that matches your exact model number.
