Usually, there is no safe, universal way to convert an automatic car battery charger to manual. The controls and protections vary by make and model, and the available documentation does not establish a generic modification. Check the manual for your exact charger; if it does not offer a manufacturer-designed manual mode, ask the manufacturer or a qualified repair professional rather than bypassing its controls.
Why a generic conversion is not safe to recommend
An automatic charger’s charging behavior depends on its particular design. Without the charger’s make, model, schematic and manufacturer instructions, a proposed bypass could change how it regulates charging, responds to faults or stops charging. The Century K3152-1 operator’s manual documents automatic/manual charger models, but it does not provide instructions for converting another charger: Century K3152-1 operator’s manual.
A factory-designed manual mode on one charger is not evidence that a different automatic charger can be modified safely. Do not assume a modification will preserve automatic shutoff or other built-in protection.
What to check before choosing a charging method
- Identify the battery. Confirm its chemistry, nominal voltage and manufacturer charging limits. Do not infer that a charger supports lithium or another chemistry from its appearance or voltage alone.
- Read the charger manual. Look for an explicitly supported manual mode and the battery types the charger is designed to charge. Follow the charger manufacturer’s directions.
- Use battery-specific settings. Trojan advises using the correct charging current and voltage and following the charger instructions. Its guidance lists 14.4 V absorption/bulk and 13.5 V float for specified 12 V Solar Premium and Signature batteries; it also lists a maximum charge current of 13% of C20 and a maximum absorption phase of four hours for those same lines. These are product-line-specific settings, not general values for car batteries or other chemistries. See Trojan Battery’s charging guidance.
- Ask for a model-specific determination. If the manual does not describe the mode you want, contact the charger manufacturer or a qualified repair professional. Do not attempt a wiring change based on generic instructions.
Manual mode versus using the automatic charger
If you want more control over when charging ends, compare a purpose-built manual charger with using your existing automatic charger as its manufacturer directs. The right choice depends on compatibility and how charging is controlled; the sources do not establish a particular model as suitable for your battery.

Charging safety matters
Lead-acid batteries can release explosive gas while charging. Interstate’s Guardian charger manual warns about this hazard and specifies supported lead-acid chemistries; its guidance is not proof that another charger supports the same batteries. Read the Interstate Guardian charger manual for its model-specific instructions.
Trojan advises charging in a well-ventilated area, keeping sparks and flames away, avoiding overcharging, not charging a frozen battery, and avoiding charging above 120°F (48.8°C). Apply the battery manufacturer’s instructions for the battery in question; those Trojan cautions do not substitute for another manufacturer’s specifications.

If you already altered the charger
Stop using it until the manufacturer or a qualified repair professional can determine whether the change affected regulation, temperature behavior, fault protection or charge termination. Do not connect it to a battery merely to see whether the modification works.
