First shut off and depressurize the line, then remove any clamp. If you need to reuse the hose, try gently twisting it to loosen its grip before pulling steadily. If the hose is scrap—or the fitting maker specifies it—cut it off carefully without nicking the barbs. The right method depends on the hose and fitting design.
Before you start: isolate the line and inspect the hose
Shut down the system and relieve pressure before disconnecting the hose. A U.S. Army and U.S. Marine Corps maintenance procedure for a particular push-on hose application specifies shutting down the equipment and bleeding air from the system before replacement; follow the applicable equipment procedure for your own line. Remove the clamp completely before trying to pull the hose. Check for cracking, flattening, or hardening; a hose in poor condition may not be suitable for reuse. These are general checks, not a substitute for the instructions for your equipment.
If you need to save the hose
For a fitting design that permits removal, gently twist the hose to break its grip, then pull steadily. Avoid jerking, which can damage the hose or fitting. If hand removal is difficult, hose-removal pliers may help when their size and design are compatible.

Mishimoto lists its MMTL-HRM hose-removal pliers for hoses from 5/32 inch to 1/2 inch. That is the manufacturer’s stated range, not a guarantee that the tool suits every hose material or barb. If the hose is being replaced
Cutting the hose off can be simpler and may be the prescribed method for some push-on fittings. Dixon’s instructions for its push-on hose mender specify leaving the fitting in place, making a one-inch lengthwise cut along the barbed end, avoiding the barbs, and then giving the hose a sharp downward pull. There is no single removal technique established for every combination of hose material, barb material, and fitting style. Be especially cautious with plastic fittings, lines that carry hazardous fluid, or a fitting with its own maintenance procedure. Do not assume heat or lubricant is a safe default: the sources here do not establish a generally safe recommendation for either.

- Use the fitting maker’s procedure when it is available.
- If you are reusing the fitting, protect the barbs from cuts and other damage that could compromise sealing.
- If the hose must be saved, confirm that the removal tool fits both the hose size and fitting design.
