The University of Manchester announced that a 2021 gym project in Amesbury, England, was the world’s first graphene concrete slab engineered for sustainability in a commercial setting. The project used concrete called Concretene at the Southern Quarter gym in Solstice Park; the announcement reported a strength increase of around 30%, a project claim rather than an independently verified result.
Where and when was the slab poured?
The slab was installed at the Southern Quarter gym at Solstice Park in Amesbury, Wiltshire, a few miles from Stonehenge. The University of Manchester identified Nationwide Engineering as its construction partner.
- 6 May 2021: an initial 234 m² was poured.
- 25 May 2021: a further 495 m² was scheduled to complete the floor slab.
These dates and areas are from the University of Manchester announcement published via EurekAlert on 25 May 2021. Contemporaneous New Atlas coverage also located the project at Solstice Park. Later local reporting referred to the Solstice Park gym as a commercial deployment and noted later residential use.
What did “world’s first” mean?
The University’s claim was specifically that this was the world’s first graphene concrete slab engineered for sustainability in a commercial setting. It should not be read as proof that graphene had never been used in concrete before. The announcement described one named commercial project, not a comparison establishing priority across every experimental, research or non-commercial use.

What is Concretene, and how was it used?
Concretene was the name given to the graphene-enhanced concrete used for the floor. The project described adding a small amount of a graphene-based mixture to the water-and-cement mix at the batching plant, within the existing concrete production process. The announcement said the additive could be dosed using the existing system, without changes to site-laying equipment or training.
The University’s explanation was that graphene could provide mechanical support and an additional catalyst surface during early hydration, helping bonding at microscopic scale. This is the project’s account of its material and process, not independent confirmation of how every mix performs. The announcement also said the graphene for the 25 May pour was supplied by Versarien plc.

Was graphene concrete 30% stronger?
The University of Manchester announcement reported that the project’s concrete was “around 30%” stronger than standard concrete. That is an attributed project claim. The sources cited here do not provide a mix design, test protocol or independent replication, so the figure should not be treated as a universal result for graphene concrete or as a guarantee for another mix or application.
The announcement linked greater strength to the possibility of using less material. It did not quantify a reduction in the amount used for this slab, establish a carbon saving, or provide a lifecycle assessment. Although the announcement noted that cement production accounts for around 8% of global CO₂ emissions, that background figure is not a measure of emissions avoided by this project.

What was meant by a “living laboratory”?
Nationwide Engineering planned to monitor the slab through the gym’s fit-out and operation, describing the site as a “living laboratory.” The 2021 sources establish the monitoring plan, but do not report its subsequent results. They also do not establish current product availability, certification or supplier status.
