Danjiang Bridge: The World’s Longest-Span Single-Pylon Asymmetric Cable-Stayed Bridge

Danjiang Bridge crosses Taiwan’s Tamsui River estuary with a 450-metre main span supported by one mast. Here are its design, dimensions, project team and status caveat.

Danjiang Bridge is a 920-metre road, cycling and pedestrian crossing over the Tamsui River estuary in northern Taiwan, designed by Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA). Its defining feature is a single 200-metre mast supporting an asymmetric cable-stayed arrangement, including a 450-metre main span. Taiwan’s Directorate General of Highways calls it the “world’s longest-span single-pylon asymmetric cable-stayed bridge”—a claim about this specific structural category, not the longest cable-stayed bridge overall. Its scheduled opening was May 12, 2026, but the available dated reports do not establish whether it opened or is operating as of October 8, 2026.

What makes Danjiang Bridge distinctive?

Most cable-stayed bridges use one or more towers to support a deck through angled cables. Danjiang’s design uses one concrete mast and an asymmetric arrangement: the longer span extends 450 metres to the west, while the shorter east span is 175 metres. The bridge’s total length is 920 metres, and its mast is 200 metres high, according to ZHA’s project page (Zaha Hadid Architects).

The distinction in the highway agency’s record description is important. Its wording is “world’s longest-span single-pylon asymmetric cable-stayed bridge,” not a claim that Danjiang has the longest cable-stayed span of any configuration. The agency also says construction began in February 2019 (Taiwan Directorate General of Highways).

How the single-mast design responds to the estuary

ZHA says the single concrete mast was selected to support the main span while reducing visual impact and limiting structural elements in the estuary riverbed. Its position also had to account for river navigation and views from popular sunset-watching locations along the water (Zaha Hadid Architects).

K’NEX Education – Intro to Structures: Bridges Set – 207 Pieces – For Grades 3-5 Construction Education Toy
  • CLASSIC PIECES – K’NEX Education’s Intro to Structures Bridges Set consists of 207 classic pieces, including rods, stems, and connectors. Kids can attach these parts to one another in different ways, allowing them to create a variety of fully functioning bridge models. The snap-fit pieces stick together securely and can be easily reassembled into other creations.
  • REAL-WORLD STRUCTURES – Build 13 fully-functioning replicas of real-life bridges. These models help educate builders about bridge infrastructure by demonstrating key bridge types, such as truss, arch, cantilever, beam, suspension, movable/bascule, and cable-stayed. Building instructions and a teacher’s guide on a CD are included, providing the information needed to build one’s understanding of scientific, technical, and design concepts.
  • CONVENIENT STORAGE –Keep all K’NEX parts in one easy-to-access place. Enjoy hassle-free cleanup and storage, as this building set comes with a convenient portable storage tray with a snap-on lid.
  • VERSATILE – K’NEX Education’s Intro to Structures Bridges Set is designed to enhance kids’ imaginations through the creative assembly of K’NEX pieces. Aside from the 13 bridges they can build, the set can also be used to create buildings, houses, and towers. This toy is ideal for kids from grades 3 to 5, and 2 to 3 people can work on each set.
  • STEAMagination: It’s the connection of STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts & math) with a child’s natural curiosity and creativity and it powers the fun of each and every K’NEX building set. Building with K’NEX puts children on a path towards a fundamental understanding of STEAM/STEM subjects.

This is a site-specific design response, not simply a visual signature. Fewer supports in the riverbed can reduce interference with the waterway, while the mast’s placement and the cable arrangement must carry the asymmetric deck loads. The project description identifies these design aims, but it does not provide independently verified post-construction environmental or navigation outcomes.

Dimensions and published project figures

Published construction schedule 68 months ZHA project page, accessed 2026; published schedule, not verified actual duration.

The span figures describe the asymmetric crossing; they should not be confused with the 920-metre overall length. Likewise, the budget and schedule are the figures published by ZHA, not confirmed final project accounts.

Where the bridge connects and who it is intended to serve

On the east side, Danjiang Bridge connects with Highway 2. On the west, it links to Highway 15, the West Coast Expressway (Route 61), and the Bali–Xindian Expressway (Route 64). ZHA describes the project as a way to relieve congestion on local roads and strengthen regional connections, including routes to the Port of Taipei and Taoyuan International Airport (Zaha Hadid Architects).

The design provides for road traffic as well as dedicated cycling and pedestrian routes. It also accommodates a possible future extension of the Danhai Light Rail. These are elements of the bridge’s design and intended network role; they do not establish that the rail extension has been built or that projected transport benefits have been realized.

Expected traffic and travel benefits

ZHA’s project page forecasts a 30% reduction in traffic on Guandu Bridge and a 15-kilometre, 25-minute travel saving between Bali and Tamsui (Zaha Hadid Architects). These are projections published by the architect, not measured results. No independently verified post-opening figures for traffic, journey times or regional access were established in the dated material available here.

Opening date and operating status

Reports from ArchDaily on October 23, 2025, and ARQA on January 2, 2026, said the final steel deck segment had been installed and reported May 12, 2026 as the scheduled opening date (ArchDaily; ARQA). Those reports establish the milestone and announced date, but they do not confirm that the bridge opened on schedule. ZHA’s page still labels the project “Under Construction” and retains an earlier 2024 opening date, so it is not a reliable source for the current operating status. As of October 8, 2026, whether Danjiang Bridge is open to traffic remains unconfirmed by these sources.
