At about 18 km long, it is being built as an immersed-tube tunnel: huge prefabricated concrete sections are lowered into a prepared trench beneath the seabed, rather than bored through rock. Some project descriptions round the overall crossing to 19 km.
As of 28 September 2026, four tunnel elements had been installed and the project was nearing its first kilometre of completed tunnel. It is not yet an operating crossing, and the project’s announced two-stage opening plan has no dates specified in the consulted update.
What is the Fehmarn Belt tunnel?
The fixed link will cross the Fehmarnbelt between the Danish island of Lolland and the German island of Fehmarn. It is a road-and-rail connection, not a bridge. The design provides two electrified railway tracks in separate tubes and road traffic in separate tubes. Femern A/S describes the tunnel as approximately 18 km long; an EU procurement description gives the crossing as 19 km, a rounded figure for the overall link.
The project is part of the Scandinavian–Mediterranean transport corridor. Its stated purpose includes improving passenger and freight connections between Scandinavia and continental Europe. [Femern A/S project homepage; EU Publications Office procurement record]

How is the tunnel being built?
This is an immersed-tube tunnel. Instead of excavating a tunnel underground with a boring machine, contractors make watertight concrete elements on land, float them to the crossing, and install them in a dredged trench on the seabed.
- Make the elements. A purpose-built factory near Rødbyhavn produces the concrete tunnel sections. Femern A/S says a standard 217-metre element consists of nine segments.
- Float and tow them. Once complete, an element is made buoyant and moved through flooded basins into the work harbour, then towed to the trench.
- Lower and connect them. The element is immersed into position and connected to the sections already installed.
- Secure and cover the tunnel. Gravel and sand backfill hold the elements in place; stone is laid over them to protect the structure.
The process depends on a prepared seabed trench and coordinated marine work. Femern A/S reports that the trench has been excavated. The broader project also includes portals, ramps, land reclamation, roads and railway connections, so progress on immersed elements is not the same as completion of the full route. What is the construction status?
Femern A/S reported on 28 September 2026 that four immersed elements had been placed and the project was approaching its first kilometre of completed tunnel. The same project update reports the 18 km trench as excavated. On the German side, portal and approach-road work is continuing. Construction began on the Danish side in 2020 and on the German side in 2021.
Excavated seabed material is being reused for embankments and land reclamation. The owner plans about 300 hectares of new land on the Lolland coast; that figure refers to reclaimed land, not the tunnel’s footprint. How long will the crossing take?
The following are Femern A/S projections from its April 2026 fact sheet, not current travel times or an independently measured timetable:

When will the Fehmarn Belt tunnel open?
Femern A/S reported in May 2026 that Sund & Bælt was working to an adjusted plan for bringing the fixed link into service in two stages. The official update reporting the September 2026 construction milestone does not give dates for either stage or specify which mode will open first. No confirmed opening date is established by those updates. [Femern A/S official news]

Femern A/S says Denmark has sole responsibility for project financing. Loans are secured by Danish state guarantees, with repayment planned through vehicle tolls and railway charges.
