The finding raised a pointed question: “Is it really going to go get recycled?” But one tracked bag does not establish what happened to every load, and the reporting did not determine the bag’s final fate.
What the tracker showed—and what it could not prove
Futurism’s Aug. 30, 2024 report, relaying an Inside Climate News investigation conducted with CBS, said Deason put an Apple tracker in bagged plastic waste and left it at a Houston Recycling Collaboration drop-off location. Reporters tracked the tagged bags to Wright Waste Management, described as roughly 20 miles outside downtown Houston. Deason, identified as a Houston Air Alliance member, said, “We want to know what was happening with this stuff.” Futurism’s account of the investigation
Reporters were not allowed inside the facility. Drone footage showed a large open-air pile, but that view did not establish the final disposition of each tracked item. The evidence supports saying the tagged bags reached Wright Waste Management; it does not prove that all collaboration-collected plastic was dumped, landfilled, or handled the same way.
An AirTag is an item-finding product: it emits a Bluetooth signal that nearby devices in Apple’s Find My network can detect. It is not a professional GPS logger, continuous location monitor, or certification of a recycling chain. Apple’s AirTag description

Why the Houston sorting plant mattered
The 2024 investigation reported that the sorting plant intended to support the collaboration’s advanced-recycling plan had not opened. The article said it was expected to open “the middle of next year”—a forecast made in 2024, not a current schedule. During the same period, the collaboration’s drop-off locations reportedly grew from one to eight. Those are historical figures from the report, not verified current counts.
The outlets also reported that a document request found three failed fire-marshal inspections from July 2023 through April 2024, involving missing permits related to hazardous and combustible-material storage. That account does not establish the site’s present compliance status. The report said no chemical-recycling process had taken place through the collaboration in its first 20 months.

Inside Climate News published a Dec. 13, 2024 follow-up about a Houston city council member’s questions concerning the collaboration and its advanced-recycling efforts. The available reporting does not establish the current status of the Houston sorting or preprocessing facility, or where collaboration-collected material goes today. Baytown’s newer operation does not answer the Houston question
On Feb. 2, 2026, ExxonMobil announced that its third advanced-recycling unit at Baytown was operational, with capacity there of up to about 250 million pounds of plastic waste annually. That is a company-reported capacity for the Baytown site—not a measured volume of Houston collaboration plastic processed there. The announcement does not show that Deason’s tracked bag, or any other Houston collaboration load, reached Baytown. ExxonMobil announcement, Feb. 2, 2026

Houston curbside rules are separate from collaboration drop-off
Houston’s current curbside guide accepts rinsed and drained plastic containers numbered 1–5 and 7. It excludes film and flexible plastics, including plastic bags and shrink wrap. These curbside rules describe the city’s curbside collection, not what the separate Houston Recycling Collaboration accepts at its drop-off sites. Check the relevant program’s current instructions before leaving material. City of Houston curbside recycling guide

How to read the evidence
- Tracker signal: locates a tagged item through the Find My network; it does not document every handoff or prove what happened after the signal was detected.
- Visible storage: drone footage showed an outdoor pile at Wright Waste Management, but reporters could not enter and the footage did not establish final disposal.
- Inspection records: the reported failed inspections concern the July 2023–April 2024 period; they do not establish current compliance.
- Operator announcement: ExxonMobil’s Baytown capacity statement describes that site, not the Houston material’s route.
