Woodworking Power Tools: What Each Tool Does and How to Choose

A task-based guide to woodworking power tools: what saws, routers, planers, sanders, and other machines do, plus how to compare capacity, space, dust control, and safety.

Choose woodworking power tools by the operation you need to perform and the size of the workpiece—not by trying to fill a shop with every machine category. A table saw is for straight sawing, a router shapes edges and mills details, and planers and jointers prepare stock. Capacity, shop space, guarding, dust collection, and compatible accessories determine whether a tool is a practical fit.

Start with the job, not a shopping list

Before comparing machines, identify the operation: straight cutting, curved cutting, edge shaping, stock preparation, sanding, drilling, or joinery. Then match the tool’s capacity to the dimensions of the material and consider how it will be set up, supported, powered, and stored. A small project or limited shop may call for portable tools; larger or repeated work may justify a stationary machine, but there is no universal starter setup.

Which woodworking power tool does what?

Saws for straight and curved cuts

A table saw is used for straight sawing. Depending on the setup and blade, it can rip stock along its length or crosscut it. OSHA describes the workpiece being guided through the blade, making safe feeding, suitable support for the stock, and functional guarding central considerations. See OSHA’s table-saw guidance.

A circular saw is a portable option for cutting sheet goods or dimensional lumber; a band saw is a category to consider when curved cuts are part of the work. Capacity and work support matter: make sure the tool and setup accommodate the size and shape of the workpiece.

Routers for shaping and detail

A handheld router spins a bit held in a collet, with the bit projecting through the base. It can shape decorative pieces, cut profiles, make frame-and-panel doors, and mill moldings. Router comparisons should include the base configuration, collet size, compatible bits, and provisions for dust collection. Check the specific tool manual before buying bits or accessories; compatibility should not be assumed across routers. OSHA’s router guidance covers common uses and safe practices.

Planers and jointers for stock preparation

Planers and jointers are stock-preparation machines. Their working width and capacity should suit the lumber you intend to prepare, and their footprint and material-handling needs should fit the shop. Manufacturer catalogs list these as distinct woodworking tool categories, but a category listing alone does not establish how a particular machine will perform. Compare the specifications and instructions for the individual model.

Sanders, drills, and joinery tools

Sanders prepare or refine surfaces, drills make holes, and joinery tools help form connections between pieces. OSHA’s woodworking equipment and hazard resources also cover lathes and drill presses. These tools serve different tasks, so prioritize the operations your projects actually require rather than treating every machine as a basic necessity. OSHA’s broader woodworking eTool outlines equipment and hazards across the trade.

Compare tools against your project and shop

  • Workpiece size: Check cutting, planing, or drilling capacity against the actual width, thickness, and length of your material. Plan how long or wide pieces will be supported as they enter and leave the machine.
  • Power and portability: Consider the available power source, whether the machine needs to move between work areas, and whether its weight and setup make that realistic.
  • Space and storage: Account for the machine’s footprint plus room to feed, guide, and retrieve stock safely. Include space for setup and storage of accessories.
  • Guarding and safe operation: Identify the guards and safety devices supplied or required, and make sure they can remain in place during the intended operation. Read the manual and follow applicable workplace rules.
  • Dust collection: Check whether the tool has a collection port and whether your extraction system and hoses can connect effectively. Source capture and system maintenance matter; a port alone does not guarantee adequate dust control.
  • Accessories and consumables: Include the blades, bits, abrasives, jigs, and other task-specific items needed for the work. Verify sizes and compatibility in the tool’s manual.

Control wood dust at the source

Wood dust is a health hazard. OSHA recommends local exhaust ventilation (LEV) close to where dust is produced and says collection systems should be maintained. Its guidance addresses collection at saws, jointers, planers, routers, and sanders. For routers and sanders, conventional exhaust can be difficult or less effective, so consider source capture and a suitable system when choosing equipment and planning the shop. Review OSHA’s wood-dust guidance.

The OSHA page reports several figures with different scopes. It describes 1 mg/m³ total dust as NIOSH’s recommended exposure level; it is not identified there as an OSHA permissible exposure limit. The page also cites an ACGIH threshold limit value of 0.5 mg/m³ for western red cedar, referring to a 1996 source and asthma effects; that should not be treated as a current universal limit. Separately, OSHA gives an effective duct velocity of 2,500 to 4,000 feet per minute for conveying dust and chips and helping prevent plugging. That is technical duct-system guidance, not a rating for a consumer tool.

Operate machines with their safeguards in place

Woodworking machinery can cause severe injuries if used improperly or without appropriate safeguards. OSHA’s eTool explains technical information and relevant standards; it states, “This eTool does not create new OSHA requirements.” Workplace regulatory requirements depend on the applicable standards and circumstances. For consumer use, follow the machine manufacturer’s instructions and keep required guards and safety devices functional.

Table saw precautions

Feeding stock brings hands near a moving blade. Use the machine’s guarding and suitable work support, and do not remove scraps while the blade is moving or coasting. OSHA’s table-saw material addresses guarding for hand-fed saws; consult the applicable requirements and the specific machine manual rather than treating general advice as a substitute for them.

Handheld router precautions

Secure the workpiece before routing, use jigs or guards where possible, and provide appropriate dust collection and eye protection. OSHA advises against starting a cut with end-grain routing. Follow the router’s own instructions for setup, bit installation, and operation.

Make a practical first purchase decision

  1. Write down the operations your next projects require. Separate essential cuts or shaping from work you might do only occasionally.
  2. Measure representative workpieces. Compare their dimensions with each candidate machine’s stated capacity and plan for safe support.
  3. Map the setup in your shop. Include operating clearance, material handling, storage, power access, and dust-extraction routing.
  4. Check safeguards and instructions. Confirm the intended operation can be done with the machine’s guarding and safety devices in place.
  5. Confirm the full system is compatible. Check blades, bits, collets, bases, hoses, and other accessories against the specific model’s manual.
  6. Buy for a real task. Add a machine when it solves a recurring need your existing tools cannot handle safely or efficiently, not simply because it belongs on a maximal shop list.

Available sources establish tool categories and general uses, but they do not establish prices, current stock, a tested winner, or a best brand. Compare current model specifications and manuals for the tools under consideration.
