Wood continues to shrink and swell as its moisture content changes, even after it has been dried and made into furniture. The practical answer is to choose lumber suited to its future environment and use joints and attachments that let solid wood moveârather than relying on glue or finish to hold it still.
Why wood changes size
Below the fiber saturation point, moisture leaving the cell walls causes wood to shrink; moisture entering them causes it to swell. Seasoning or kiln-drying lowers the woodâs moisture content before construction, but does not make it immune to later changes in its surroundings.
Wood does not move equally in every direction. According to WOOD Magazineâs 2017 guide, shrinkage is greatest tangentially, around the annual rings; radial shrinkage is about half as great, and movement along the grain is minimal. Species, density and other variables affect the amount of change. This difference is why a broad solid-wood panel needs more allowance across its width than along its length.
How to recognize wood movement and drying defects
- Cup: the board loses flatness from edge to edge.
- Bow: it curves lengthwise along the face.
- Crook: it curves along the edge.
- Twist: the boardâs corners no longer lie equally flat.
- Checking: splits form along the grain, often at board ends as they dry.
End grain dries faster than the sides: the WOOD Magazine article reports that wood loses moisture along its length about 10 times faster than across its width. Faster drying at the ends can lead to shrinkage and checking.

- HUMIDITY SENSOR: Our handy meter tool can quickly determine what level of remediation is needed to keep your family safe from black mold. High levels of dampness that go untreated are the leading cause of harmful fungus growth in the home.
- WATER LEAK DETECTOR: Finding the moisture content in your wood or drywall is the first step in early prevention. Continuously check and test suspicious water stains around the house so you can determine whether the area is wet or has already dried. - MOISTURE READER: The mold test features large 0.3" high digits in a backlit LCD for quick and easy detecting. Our mildew scanner includes extra 8mm stainless steel pins, a protective cap that doubles as a calibration checker, and a â9Vâ battery.
- MOLD TESTER: For an accurate test read, stick the stainless steel pins into the surface of what you're measuring. The gauge has a broad range of 5 - 50% for wood and 1.5 - 33% for building materials such as concrete and drywall.

Match lumber moisture to where the project will live
WOOD Magazine gives general targets of 8 percent moisture content for indoor use and 12â15 percent for outdoor use. These are broad guidance figures for wood dried toward the average moisture content it will experience in service, not universal specifications for every species, location or project. Conditions at the projectâs actual site matter, so select lumber with its intended environment in mind. A moisture meter can help check lumber, but the article does not specify or evaluate a particular meter.
Design joints to let solid wood move
Do not rigidly trap a wide solid-wood panel across its grain. In frame-and-panel construction, the frame holds the panel in grooves while the panel remains free to expand and contract. It is not glued or nailed rigidly into the frame. The same principle applies wherever a solid-wood component is attached: its connection should accommodate movement rather than prevent it.

- FIND HIDDEN WALL MOISTURE EARLY â Check suspicious drywall and building surfaces after a leak, water stain, or other moisture concern. Detect abnormal moisture before a small issue develops into more extensive damage and costly repairs
- CHECK BEFORE YOU REPAIR â Don't rely on a wall looking or feeling dry. Use the moisture meter to check questionable areas before painting, repairing, or covering the surface, helping you make decisions based on actual moisture readings.
- CHECK FIREWOOD BEFORE YOU BURN â Test firewood before placing it in your fireplace or wood stove. Knowing the moisture level of your firewood helps you choose wood that is ready for burning and avoid relying on appearance alone.
- PIN-TYPE TESTING FOR DIRECT MEASUREMENTS â The contact pins penetrate the material to measure moisture inside wood and building materials. This makes it useful for checking areas where surface conditions may not tell the whole story.
- ONE TOOL FOR TWO IMPORTANT HOME CHECKS â Keep it ready for two practical jobs: checking walls for hidden moisture and checking firewood before burning. A simple way to make informed decisions before a moisture problem becomes expensive or wood goes into the fireplace.
For flush-fitting doors and drawers, WOOD Magazine reports a shop saying about leaving seasonal ânickel and dimeâ reveals. Treat that as informal shop advice, not a universal measurement; fit depends on the project and its conditions.

A finish slows moisture exchange, but it cannot completely block moisture from entering wood. WOOD Magazine recommends a moisture-resistant finish on all surfaces, while noting that a finish is not a substitute for movement-accommodating construction. The appropriate finish depends on the pieceâs intended use.
