Woodchip bioreactors treat nitrate in subsurface agricultural drainage by routing tile water through a controlled chamber of carbon-rich woodchips. Microbes use the carbon in the chamber’s low-oxygen conditions to convert nitrate-nitrogen into nitrogen gas. The practice is an engineered, site-specific conservation system—not simply a pit of chips—and its results depend on location, water flow, design and maintenance.
What is a woodchip bioreactor?
A denitrifying woodchip bioreactor is an edge-of-field structure that intercepts subsurface drainage, usually from agricultural drainage tile. It diverts that water into a chamber filled with woodchips, where microbial activity reduces nitrate before the treated water leaves the system. The USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) identifies nitrate reduction in subsurface drainage as the practice’s core water-quality benefit.
NRCS describes the system as an excavated trench filled with woodchips. Relatively consistent tile flow helps keep the media saturated; surface-water ponding and heavy traffic are poor fits because they can disrupt operation or compact the media. The chamber must be located and built around actual drainage conditions, not treated as a generic excavation. NRCS Whole Farm Conservation Best Practices Manual: Bioreactors.
How does a woodchip bioreactor work?
- Drainage is intercepted. Tile water is directed from a suitable outlet into the bioreactor through water-control structures.
- Water passes through carbon media. The chamber holds woodchips that provide a carbon source for microbes. Low-oxygen conditions support denitrification.
- Nitrate is transformed. Microbes convert nitrate-nitrogen in the water to nitrogen gas, which can leave the system.
- Treated water exits. An outlet collects and returns the flow to the drainage pathway.
Flow distribution and time in the chamber matter: water must be spread through the media rather than bypassing it, while the design must also accommodate drainage flows. NRCS therefore calls for suitable water controls, even distribution and collection, and a chamber that can be drained for management.

What does NRCS recommend for design and maintenance?
NRCS’s Conservation Choices 2026 guidance sets out planning and design criteria. These targets guide design; they are not guarantees of a particular measured result at every site.
- Establish the need. Use water sampling to determine whether nitrate treatment is appropriate, and choose a suitable location near a drainage outlet.
- Design for flow. Account for peak drainage flow and use locally proven criteria for long-term average annual flow.
- Set a performance objective. NRCS says the design should target at least a 30% annual reduction in nitrate-nitrogen concentration in water flowing through the bioreactor.
- Plan for service life. Design the media chamber for an expected life of at least 10 years. This is an expected design life, not a guarantee that all media or installations will last exactly that long.
- Protect and distribute the media. Use media reasonably free of dirt, fines and contaminants; line the chamber to prevent soil particles migrating into it; and provide even water distribution and collection.
- Make maintenance possible. The chamber should be drainable, and the landowner should receive an operation and management plan.
- Inspect each year. Check for uniform flow, outlet clogging and media settling; remove debris and sediment from inlets.
How much nitrate does a woodchip bioreactor remove?
There is no single removal rate that can be applied to every installation. A 2025 study of ten full-size bioreactors in Illinois, spanning 36 site-years, reported a median edge-of-field nitrogen removal efficiency of 17% and a median annual nitrogen load removed of 49 kg N per bioreactor. These are medians for that study population, not a forecast for an individual project. Journal of Environmental Management study (2025).

Efficiency and total load removed describe different things. In the Illinois study, as annual nitrogen loading increased, removal efficiency decreased while the total nitrogen load removed increased. A system can therefore remove more nitrogen by mass in a year while removing a smaller share of the incoming load. Any percentage should be read with its metric and study context, rather than as a universal promise.
What affects performance and what are the trade-offs?
Bioreactor performance depends on conditions such as water flow, hydraulic retention time, temperature and media. A design that treats one site effectively may not transfer unchanged to another. Enhanced designs also need to be assessed for unintended effects, not just nitrate removal.

No. A 2022 field pilot study summarized by USDA’s Agricultural Research Service tested woodchips and corncob/woodchip arrangements at multiple hydraulic retention times. At corresponding retention times, the 75% corncob treatment had estimated nitrogen removal rates 1.6 to 10.1 times those of woodchips alone. The authors called for additional field studies, so the finding is promising early evidence—not a universal replacement recommendation or standard NRCS practice. USDA ARS summary of Law et al. What should a landowner consider before installing one?
Start with the drainage system and the water-quality need, then assess whether a bioreactor can fit the site’s flow and management conditions. NRCS guidance supports working from site-specific sampling and design criteria rather than choosing a chamber or media by appearance alone.
Quick Recap
- Confirm nitrate is a treatment concern through appropriate water sampling.
- Assess the drainage outlet, flow patterns, available space and access for inspection.
- Plan for peak flows, water controls, lining, distribution and collection, and the ability to drain the chamber for maintenance.
- Discuss media quality, expected service life and an operation and management plan with qualified agricultural drainage or conservation professionals.
- Do not assume consumer mulch, a generic pit of chips or retail test strips meet engineering, media or monitoring requirements.
