Temperate bonsai such as junipers, pines and maples generally need seasonal dormancy outdoors, while some tropical and subtropical species need frost-free shelter. Because a bonsai grows in a shallow pot, its roots can be more exposed to cold than those of a tree planted in the ground.
Identify your bonsai before choosing winter protection
Find the tree’s species or cultivar, then check species-specific care guidance. Broad labels such as “indoor bonsai” can be misleading: some temperate trees are sold for indoor display but still need outdoor seasonal conditions. Bonsai Empire’s indoor-care guidance distinguishes temperate trees from tropical species, while Bonsai4Me notes that its cultivation advice is written from a UK climate perspective. Local climate and the individual species both matter.
- Temperate bonsai: These generally need a seasonal cycle and should not simply be moved into a heated living room for winter.
- Tropical or subtropical bonsai: In places with freezing winters, some need an indoor or heated, frost-free location. If kept indoors, account for their light needs.
If you have just bought a tree in winter, avoid an abrupt change in conditions. Bonsai4Me advises keeping it in conditions similar to those it experienced at the retailer while you determine the right long-term arrangement.
Can your bonsai stay outside in winter?
Often, a temperate bonsai can remain outdoors if its species, local winter conditions and protection setup are suitable. There is no single safe minimum temperature for every bonsai: species, acclimation, wind, the shallow pot and changing day-to-night conditions all affect exposure. Use a species-specific guide and consider the coldest conditions at your site rather than relying on a general hardiness category.

Assess the place where the tree will spend winter:
- How low are temperatures expected to fall, and for how long?
- Is the pot exposed to strong wind, driving rain or rapid temperature swings?
- Can you protect the root ball without keeping the tree persistently wet or bringing it into excessive warmth?
- For an evergreen, will its sheltered position still provide appropriate light?
Choose a shelter that protects the pot and preserves dormancy
For an outdoor temperate tree, protection should moderate exposure around the shallow root ball without turning winter into an artificially warm growing season. Bonsai Empire describes several options; none is a guarantee against every temperature or weather condition.
| Protection option | When it may suit | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Cold frame or greenhouse | For outdoor trees needing more shelter in a cold area. | Ventilate on sunny, warm days. Excess heat can interrupt dormancy, and growth that begins early is vulnerable to a later frost. |
| Insulate the pot | When a tree remains outdoors and its shallow container needs added protection. | Keep checking soil moisture and avoid leaving the root area persistently wet. |
| Bury the pot in garden soil | When a sheltered garden spot is available and the tree is suited to outdoor wintering. | This protects the roots by surrounding the pot with soil, but is not a universal guarantee; check the species and local conditions. |
| Place pots on the ground in a sheltered spot | In milder conditions where reducing exposure and wind may be enough for the particular tree and site. | Strong wind can dry or damage trees. Confirm that the arrangement is appropriate for the expected lows. |
Choose the least complicated setup that provides suitable protection for your tree and site. The key considerations are root protection, seasonal conditions, light where relevant, ventilation and the ability to monitor moisture.

Water by checking the soil, not by following a calendar
Dormant bonsai generally use less water, but the root ball should not be allowed to dry out. Check the soil and water when it dries; avoid keeping it continuously wet. A sheltered spot can help reduce exposure to strong wind, which can dry or damage a tree. Continue checking the soil even when cold weather slows growth.
Protect new growth when winter ends
As temperatures rise, watch for buds opening or new growth appearing. A warm spell can encourage a tree in a greenhouse or other shelter to break dormancy, and tender new growth can be damaged if frost returns. Ventilate a greenhouse or cold frame during warm, sunny spells, and protect emerging growth when late frost threatens.

When should you bring a bonsai indoors?
Bring a bonsai into indoor or heated protection only when its species requires conditions that the outdoor winter cannot provide. This is particularly relevant to some tropical and subtropical trees in freezing climates. For a temperate tree, a warm living room is not a general substitute for winter dormancy. If a tree has been kept indoors or has just come from a retailer, avoid sudden changes and seek species-specific advice before moving it.
Bonsai Empire’s overwintering guidance covers dormancy, shelter, watering and spring frost; Bonsai4Me’s Winter Care For Bonsai was published on August 16, 2022, and its species guides state that their cultivation guidance takes a UK perspective. Those different contexts are reasons to check local conditions rather than apply one temperature rule to every tree.
