Usually not, as long as the container stayed closed. Finishing expert Bob Flexner, quoted by WOOD Magazine, says solvents stored in closed containers never lose their ability to thin or clean up finishes. Solvents left open do evaporate, and that is the real problem with old cans. The guidance is general, so a damaged, contaminated, or poorly sealed container needs a closer look before you rely on it.
Why closed versus open matters most
The distinction that matters is whether the container stayed sealed. In WOOD Magazine’s answer to a reader asking about denatured alcohol, mineral spirits, acetone, and lacquer thinner, Flexner’s point is that a closed container protects the solvent’s ability to thin or clean up finishes. An open container lets the liquid evaporate, leaving less solvent and a changed mixture, which is what actually weakens it. The magazine’s page was updated March 6, 2025, and as of October 2026 that remains the most direct published answer to this question that I could identify.
No published shelf life exists
Neither WOOD Magazine nor the product information reviewed here gives a number of years after which a solvent expires. Any article or label claiming a fixed “best-by” period for solvents in general is going beyond the evidence. What you can say with confidence is narrower: a sealed, undamaged container of a standard solvent is expected to keep its function, while an open or compromised one is not.
Solvents are not interchangeable
“Solvent” covers several distinct products, and each has its own label and safety data sheet (SDS). Manufacturers such as Jasco and Crown publish SDS libraries for common thinners and solvents, which is where to confirm the exact product’s properties and handling. Behavior also differs by product. Krylon describes its mineral spirits as a weak solvent with slow evaporation, used mainly with alkyd finishes. Other products on your shelf may behave differently, so do not assume a solvent that worked for one finish will suit another.

How to check an old solvent
- Identify the product. Read the front label and find the exact product name, not just the category.
- Check the container’s seal. If it was left open, or the lid no longer seals, treat the solvent as evaporated and do not assume it will thin or clean up as expected.
- Inspect the container for damage, rust, leaks, or contamination such as paint, water, or debris in the can.
- Look up the product’s current SDS on the manufacturer’s website and confirm the product still matches your finish.
- If the container is damaged, contaminated, or you cannot confirm its identity, contact the manufacturer’s product support rather than testing it on a finished project.
What no simple test can tell you
The reviewed sources do not establish a reliable home test based on color, smell, or appearance for deciding whether an old, opened solvent is still suitable. A solvent that looks and smells normal may still have lost volume through evaporation or taken on contaminants. For that reason, the closed-container rule is a good starting point, but it does not replace reading the label, the SDS, and the manufacturer’s guidance for your specific product.
Practical takeaway for storage
Keep solvents tightly closed, store them in their original containers, and label any transferred solvent with its product name and date opened. A closed, undamaged can of a known product is the situation Flexner’s guidance supports. A can that has been open, damaged, or contaminated, or whose product you cannot identify, should be checked with the manufacturer before you use it or dispose of it through your local hazardous-waste program.

Closed, undamaged solvents generally keep their thinning and cleanup ability, while open ones evaporate. There is no published fixed shelf life, so confirm the exact product’s label and SDS, and contact the manufacturer for any container that is damaged, contaminated, or unidentifiable.
