phosphorus deficiency

Why Your Tomato Leaves Are Turning Purple—and What to Do

Purple tomato leaves do not automatically mean phosphorus is missing from the soil. Check temperature, leaf pattern, pH, and roots—and test before fertilizing.

Purple tomato leaves can signal phosphorus-related stress, but they do not prove your soil lacks phosphorus. Cold soil often keeps roots from taking up phosphorus that is already present; transplant stress, soil pH, and root problems can cause similar symptoms. Check the leaf pattern and growing conditions, then test before adding fertilizer.

What purple leaves can tell you

Phosphorus-related stress often begins on older leaves. They may turn darker than usual, with purple or reddish color showing on veins, undersides, or other leaf tissue. Slow growth or stunting can accompany the color change. UConn Extension also notes that reduced root growth, delayed flowering, and premature bud drop may occur. These clues can fit a phosphorus problem, but color alone cannot confirm one.

The purple pigment is associated with increased anthocyanins. As symptoms worsen, younger leaves may also be affected, while older leaves may yellow or brown.

Why a tomato plant may look phosphorus-deficient

Cold soil can restrict uptake

Cold root-zone conditions are a common cause of phosphorus-deficiency symptoms, especially early in the season or after transplanting. A plant may show symptoms even when the soil contains phosphorus, because cold roots take it up less effectively. The University of Georgia says phosphorus becomes less available below 60°F soil temperature. UMass Extension recommends a minimum daytime temperature of 65°F to help avoid these symptoms; that is management guidance, not a universal diagnostic threshold.

Soil pH can affect availability

Soil may contain phosphorus without making it readily available to the plant. UMass Extension reports that below pH 6, phosphorus becomes much less available, and identifies 6.2–6.8 as the optimum soil pH range for tomatoes. Test your soil rather than assuming the pH from leaf color.

Transplant stress or root trouble can interfere

Temperature changes around transplanting can stress a plant and contribute to purpling. Damaged or unhealthy roots may also limit nutrient uptake. Inspect roots if you can do so without causing unnecessary damage. Significant discoloration or rot warrants advice from a local extension service or a plant diagnostic laboratory.

Clues that point to a different problem

Clue What it may suggest
Older leaves show purple veins or undersides; growth is slow; the plant was recently planted in cool conditions Phosphorus-related stress, potentially from cold-root uptake rather than a shortage in the soil
Leaflets roll upward along with purpling, especially along the veins Curly top virus is one possibility; Colorado State University Extension identifies this pattern as a clue. Seek a local diagnosis rather than treating it as a simple fertilizer problem.
Roots are significantly discolored or rotting Root disease or injury may be limiting uptake; ask a diagnostic laboratory or local extension service about testing.
Symptoms continue after conditions warm or appear with marked distortion The cause may not be cold-related phosphorus stress; reassess the plant and seek local diagnostic help.

These are clues, not a definitive diagnosis. Several causes can produce overlapping symptoms.

How to check the plant before treating it

  1. Note where symptoms start. Check whether older leaves are affected first and whether purple color is strongest on veins, undersides, or broader areas of tissue. Look for upward rolling or other distortion.
  2. Review recent conditions. Consider cool soil, recent transplanting, and the condition of the root zone. One warm, sunny afternoon does not tell you what temperatures the roots have experienced.
  3. Test soil and, if needed, tissue. A soil test can check nutrient levels and pH. UConn Extension states, “True confirmation of a phosphorus deficiency would be confirmed with a soil and/or tissue test.” If visual clues remain inconclusive, tissue testing may help.
  4. Inspect roots when appropriate. If you find significant discoloration or rot, contact a diagnostic laboratory or local extension service about a disease analysis.

A consumer soil-test kit may be a convenient first screen, but the extension sources do not establish the accuracy of any particular kit. Use local extension or laboratory testing to confirm results and guide amendment rates.

What to do once you have a likely cause

If cold soil is the likely issue

Give the plant time to establish as conditions warm, provided nutrients are present. A soil thermometer can help you check root-zone conditions, but it does not treat the plant. The cited sources do not establish a universal recovery timeline.

If a test identifies a nutrient or pH issue

Follow the soil-test recommendations for your location. Phosphorus-rich fertilizer may be appropriate when a test supports it, but do not apply a high-phosphorus product just because leaves look purple. The sources do not establish one universal fertilizer rate or application schedule.
