Yellow leaves on a snake plant have several possible causes; color alone does not prove it has been overwatered. Check the soil and drainage first, then feel the yellowing leaf and base, inspect roots if the plant is declining, and look for pests or recent exposure to cold or low light. Match the fix to the clues rather than changing watering blindly.
Start with soil moisture, drainage, and leaf texture
Check whether the pot has drainage holes and whether the soil is still wet well below the surface. Then feel the yellowing leaf, especially near its base. A soft or mushy leaf or shoot base, together with persistently wet soil, raises concern about excess moisture and root damage. Yellowing and dropping leaves can also accompany poor drainage or root and soil-borne pest problems, so yellow color by itself is not a diagnosis (UC IPM: Houseplant Problems; Ask Extension: Snake Plant question #730320, response dated October 15, 2020).
- Wet soil and soft tissue: Pause routine watering while the mix dries. Check that excess water can escape and address any drainage problem.
- Wrinkled leaves or dry, browned tips: These can point to insufficient water. Check whether the mix has actually dried before deciding to withhold water; do not treat every yellow leaf as evidence that the plant needs less water (Ask Extension).
- Yellowing without soft tissue: Check light, temperature, and pests as well as watering. Several issues can produce yellow leaves (UC IPM).
Adjust watering and correct poor drainage
Snake plant soil should dry between waterings. North Carolina State University Extension advises letting the soil dry between spring-to-autumn waterings and watering only every one to two months in winter. University of Illinois Extension advises allowing the soil to dry completely between waterings. These are general care guidelines, not a fixed calendar for every home: how quickly a pot dries depends on its conditions (North Carolina State University Extension: Snake Plant; University of Illinois Extension: Mother-in-Law Tongue).
If the existing soil stays wet or drains poorly, use a well-draining medium; Ask Extension specifically recommends cactus or succulent potting mix to reduce the chance of overwatering. A better-draining mix cannot restore roots or leaves that have already rotted. Repot only if the current container or soil is contributing to the problem, and choose a pot only slightly larger than the root ball. Use a pot with bottom drainage if the current one does not let excess water escape (Ask Extension; University of Maryland Extension: Diagnose Indoor Plant Problems).

Inspect roots if the plant is declining
If yellowing is accompanied by persistently wet soil or soft tissue and the plant is getting worse, remove it carefully from its pot and examine the roots. The snake-plant-specific Ask Extension guidance describes healthy roots as whitish; dark-colored or mushy roots may indicate soil that has stayed too wet. Cut away damaged portions and replant in a well-draining mix. Avoid disturbing a plant that is otherwise stable just to investigate a single yellow leaf (Ask Extension).
Check light and temperature
Inadequate light and low temperatures are among the possible causes of yellowing listed by UC IPM. Snake plants tolerate very low light, according to North Carolina State University Extension, but tolerance does not mean every dim location is ideal for growth. Consider whether the plant has been kept in a particularly dark spot or experienced a recent change in its light exposure (UC IPM; North Carolina State University Extension).

Look for signs of cold exposure, too. University of Maryland Extension identifies blackening as a possible cold-injury symptom and advises protecting plants from temperatures below 50°F. Move a plant away from cold conditions if it has been exposed to them (University of Maryland Extension).
Look for pests and signs of disease
Inspect both sides of the leaves, the bases, and the soil line. Fine speckling on leaves, followed by bronzing or drying, and webbing near growing points can indicate spider mites. Sticky residue, visible scale-like insects, or distorted growth can also point to pests. Identify the likely problem before applying a treatment; isolate the plant if you find pests or suspect disease so the issue does not spread to nearby plants (UC IPM: Houseplant Problems).

Choose the next step from the clues
| What you find | What it may indicate | Proportionate next step |
|---|---|---|
| Soil stays wet; leaf or base is soft or mushy | Excess moisture, poor drainage, or root damage | Pause routine watering, allow the mix to dry, and check drainage. Inspect roots if the plant is declining. |
| Wrinkled leaves or dry, browned tips; soil is dry | Possible insufficient water | Assess the mix and water when appropriate rather than withholding water indefinitely. |
| Yellowing with fine speckling or webbing | Possible spider mites | Inspect closely, identify the pest, and isolate the plant if pests are present. |
| Yellowing after a change in light or exposure to cold | Possible environmental stress | Review placement; protect the plant from temperatures below 50°F. |
These signs are clues, not a substitute for checking the whole plant and its conditions. More than one issue may be involved, so correct the problem supported by what you observe rather than applying a routine treatment without a diagnosis.
