Why Yellow Mushrooms Are Growing in Your Houseplant Pot (and What to Do)

Yellow mushrooms in a houseplant pot are most often the yellow houseplant mushroom. They do not harm living plants, but they are not safe to eat. Here is how to identify them, keep children and pets safe, and remove them.

Small yellow mushrooms in a houseplant pot are most often the yellow houseplant mushroom, Leucocoprinus birnbaumii, also called the yellow parasol or flower pot parasol. It feeds on dead organic matter in the potting medium. University extension guidance from Iowa State, UMass and UF/IFAS agrees that it does not harm living plants. It is not safe to eat, though, so the real decisions are about access by children and pets, not about the plant’s health.

How to tell whether you have this mushroom

Iowa State Extension describes the mushroom as probably L. birnbaumii. Its guide gives lemon-yellow mushrooms about 1 to 3 inches tall, with oval or bell-shaped caps, growing singly or in clusters, typically coming up from indoor potting soil. UMass Extension adds that caps can fade from bright yellow toward white as they mature, so an older mushroom may look paler than the description suggests.

Treat these features as clues, not proof. A brief description or a phone photo cannot confirm the species, and appearance alone cannot tell you whether a mushroom is toxic. If you need a formal identification, UF/IFAS recommends sending fresh material along with photos of the cap, stalk, gills, the substrate it grew from, and any scales on the stem.

Why it appears in your pot

The visible mushroom is only the fruiting body, the structure the fungus uses to reproduce. The living network, called mycelium, is a mass of thread-like filaments that runs through the soil or debris and breaks down dead organic matter. That is why a pot can show mushrooms for weeks even though you never see the fungus itself.

  • HELPS REGULATE SOIL MOISTURE: Miracle-Gro Organic Indoor Potting Soil Mix is an organic potting soil that protects indoor plants against over and under watering
  • INDOOR PLANT SOIL: This organic container mix for indoor gardening is made with responsibly sourced sphagnum peat moss (one hundred percent of peat sourced from certified producers), coir, and quick-start natural fertilizer
  • WHERE TO USE: Use this indoor potting soil mix with all types of indoor container plants, including houseplants and herbs; also great for seed starting
  • HOW TO USE: To plant seeds, fill container with organic soil for indoor plants, follow seed package directions and water; to use with transplants, partially fill container, place plant after loosening root ball, cover with more mix pressing lightly, water thoroughly and let drain
  • COVERAGE: One 16 qt. bag of Miracle-Gro Organic Indoor Potting Mix fills one 12-inch container with potting soil for indoor plants (amounts may vary based on the size of the root ball)

The fungus may have arrived in the potting mix you bought, or it may have started after airborne spores settled on moist soil. Warm, damp, organic-rich medium encourages it. The mushrooms are a sign that decomposition is happening in the pot, not a sign that the plant is dying.

Is the plant in danger?

No. Iowa State and UMass Extension both state that this fungus does not harm living houseplants, so you do not need to remove it for the plant’s sake alone. Seeing the mushrooms does not mean the plant has a disease, and it does not mean the roots are rotting.

Persistent mushrooms can still be a symptom of a pot that stays too wet. Overwatering is the condition to correct, because it keeps the medium moist enough for the fungus to keep fruiting.

Safety around children and pets

Do not eat these mushrooms, and do not let children or pets eat them. The safety guidance is not uniform, and you should not treat the mushroom as harmless:

  • UF/IFAS Extension lists L. birnbaumii among fungi that can be toxic when consumed, and says toxicity cannot be judged by looking at a mushroom.
  • UMass Extension says the exact toxicity is unknown and advises against eating them.

Touching and handling the mushrooms is not considered dangerous by UF/IFAS. The practical rule is to prevent ingestion. None of these guides gives a figure for how often such mushrooms cause poisoning, so no risk percentage should be assumed in either direction. If someone has eaten a mushroom, contact a poison control centre or a medical professional, and bring a sample or photo.

Removing the mushrooms

If children or pets can reach the pot, remove the visible mushrooms. UF/IFAS says the fruiting bodies can be picked out by hand and thrown away. Use this sequence:

  1. Put on gloves, or wash your hands with soap and water immediately afterward.
  2. Gently pull each mushroom from its base so the stalk comes out with it.
  3. Seal the mushrooms in a bag and put them in the household trash, out of reach of pets and children.
  4. Check the pot over the next few days and repeat the removal as new fruiting bodies appear.
  5. Let the top layer of soil dry more between waterings, which makes the medium less hospitable for the fungus.

Fungicides are not the answer. Iowa State Extension says fungicide treatments are generally not effective against mushrooms.

Should you repot the plant?

Replacing the potting medium is optional. UMass Extension says the medium may be replaced, and if you choose to do it, wash the pot thoroughly and disinfect reusable containers with a 10% bleach solution. Fresh medium gives you a clean start, but it does not guarantee the fungus will not return, and repotting a plant also stresses its roots.

UMass Extension’s plant diagnostic educator, Angela Madeiras, puts it this way: “These mushrooms are typically not a persistent issue, but once the fungus is established it may be difficult to eradicate.” Plan for the mushrooms to recur if the conditions that feed them stay the same.

Choosing the right response

Your decision depends mainly on whether anyone or anything can reach the pot. The table below summarises the options that the extension guidance supports.

Situation Recommended action What to expect
No children or pets have access to the plant Leave the mushrooms alone or remove them when convenient; reduce watering Plant is unaffected; mushrooms may return
Children or pets can reach the pot Remove visible mushrooms promptly and discard them; reduce watering Fewer mushrooms; the fungus may persist
You want a fresh start Optionally replace the medium, clean the pot, and disinfect reusable pots with 10% bleach Clean medium at first; recurrence is still possible once the fungus is established
Someone has eaten a mushroom Contact poison control or a medical professional; bring a sample or photo Follow professional advice; do not wait for symptoms to appear before seeking it

Preventing a return

Since the fungus feeds on dead organic matter, the most effective habit is to keep the pot from staying wet. Water only when the soil surface has dried, empty saucers so water does not pool, and remove fallen leaves or decaying plant debris from the surface. Those steps reduce the food source the fungus depends on, which is the approach the extension sources support in place of chemical treatments.
