Why Does Old Plastic Become Sticky? The Science Behind the Tacky Truth

Old plastic becomes sticky mainly when plasticizer migrates to the surface, evaporates, or is lost as the material ages, and the polymer itself can also degrade. Here is what causes it, which materials are documented, and how to handle a tacky object safely.

Old plastic usually becomes sticky because the plasticizer, the additive that keeps a plastic flexible, moves to the surface, evaporates, or is lost as the material ages. Separately, the polymer itself can chemically degrade through oxidation or hydrolysis. Either process can leave a surface tacky, but stickiness on its own does not tell you which process is happening or what the object is made of.

The short answer

A tacky surface is a symptom. The two processes most often named in conservation guidance are:

  • Plasticizer migration or exudation. Plasticizer moves through the plastic and collects on the surface, where it feels greasy or tacky and can transfer to neighboring materials.
  • Plasticizer loss and chemical aging. Plasticizer can leave by evaporation or diffusion, and the polymer chains can break down through oxidation or hydrolysis. Both change flexibility, surface character and strength.

Three processes behind a tacky surface

Plasticizer migration and exudation

Plasticizers are added to polymers such as polyvinyl chloride (PVC) so they bend rather than crack. Because they are not chemically locked into the polymer, they can move. The International Organization for Standardization describes this tendency in ISO 177:2016, Plastics, Determination of migration of plasticizers, which measures how readily plasticizers pass into materials in contact with the plastic. That standard explains why an object can leave a residue or stain a neighboring surface, but it is a laboratory test, not a way to identify an unknown object by touch.

Plasticizer loss by evaporation and diffusion

A plastic can also lose plasticizer to the air or to adjacent materials. In a 2019 paper, Xin-Feng Wei, Erik Linde and Mikael S. Hedenqvist, published in npj Materials Degradation, titled “Plasticiser loss from plastic or rubber products through diffusion and evaporation,” the authors identify plasticizer loss as a major degradation mechanism and link it to poorer mechanical properties. The stiffening that follows is one reason old plastic can feel both tacky at the surface and brittle underneath.

Chemical degradation: oxidation and hydrolysis

Some changes are not about additives at all. Oxidation and hydrolysis break down the polymer itself. The Canadian Conservation Institute (CCI) notes that these reactions can alter flexibility, surface character and strength. Because several mechanisms can produce similar surface changes, a sticky surface cannot be assigned to a single cause without further assessment.

Materials where the pattern is documented

The clearest documented cases come from conservation literature on collection objects. They describe specific materials under specific conditions, so they should not be read as a timeline for all plastics.

Material What happens Timeframe or figure, with qualification Source
Flexible PVC As plasticizer leaves, the material becomes sticky and deforms. Colorants may migrate and stain adjacent objects. Staining may appear after one or a few decades. This is a conservation observation for flexible PVC, not a typical lifespan for all plastics. Publication year not stated on the page consulted. CCI, “Pollutants”; CCI, Technical Bulletin 32
Low-cost ether- or ester-type polyurethane foam The foam becomes sticky and brittle as it deteriorates. Reported after a few years. This applies to these low-cost types only, not to all polyurethane products. Publication year not stated on the page consulted. CCI, Technical Bulletin 32
Other plastics and rubbers Migration, loss and chemical aging can all occur, depending on formulation. No broad figure on how often household or building plastics become sticky, or a universal aging timeline, is established in the sources reviewed. CCI, “Care of Objects Made from Rubber and Plastic”

The CCI sentence on flexible PVC is worth reading in full: “The flexible PVC (Polyvinyl chloride) will become sticky and will deform while the plasticizer is leaving.” Its guidance on Pollutants is the official source for that observation.

Why heat matters

Heat speeds up plasticizer migration, and cooler conditions slow it. CCI advises keeping sticky or at-risk plastics away from heat sources and storing them cool where this is practical. The same reasoning applies to the chemical reactions: lower temperatures slow the degradation reactions as well as the migration.

Why cleaning rarely reverses the problem

Cleaning removes what is on the surface. It does not restore plasticizer that has already left the material, and it does not reverse chemical aging. CCI warns that cleaning sticky or degraded plastic can be difficult and can cause further damage. For collection objects, it advises against cleaning unless it is needed, and notes that removing dust or deposits can itself damage the plastic.

What to do with a sticky plastic object

  1. Do not start with a cleaning product. Solvents, bleaches, detergents, wax, and vinyl or rubber erasers are not recommended in CCI’s collection-care guidance. CCI’s separate care note on rubber and plastics also advises against solvents and even water-based cleaning solutions.
  2. Move it away from heat. Store it in a cool place where practical.
  3. Separate it from neighboring surfaces. CCI recommends non-stick shields or interleaves made of non-fibrous, non-foam materials such as PTFE or PET sheet to reduce transfer and staining.
  4. If dust is the only issue, remove it dry. CCI’s general sequence is careful dry dust removal, gentle wiping with minimal force, and an unimpregnated microfiber cloth where appropriate.
  5. Get expert help for valuable, fragile or unidentified items. A plastics conservator is the appropriate route when cautious cleaning fails or the object matters.

Reading the signs

The surface behavior gives clues, but not a diagnosis:

  • Greasy or tacky film that transfers to hands or nearby surfaces suggests active migration or exudation of plasticizer or additives.
  • Stiffening, cracking or brittleness alongside tackiness suggests loss of plasticizer or chemical aging, and possibly both.
  • Dust that feels slightly sticky may be deposit rather than the plastic itself. Dry removal is the first step in that case.
  • Deformation under its own weight is described for flexible PVC as the plasticizer leaves, and signals that the object needs separation and cool storage.

Applying this to construction materials

The mechanisms above are general to plasticized plastics and rubbers, but the detailed observations come from museum and collection conservation, not from building products. Formulations, additives and exposure conditions vary widely between products. For construction materials, the manufacturer’s technical data and specification for the exact product are the reliable reference for expected aging and handling.
