There is no single best whole-shop heater. The right system depends on the building’s heat loss, local winter conditions, work schedule, ventilation, available gas and electrical service, and installation constraints. Start by assessing the shop as a building—not by choosing a heater from a rule of thumb—then compare warm-air, radiant, heat-pump, and electric-resistance options against the same project requirements.
Start with the shop, not the heater
Heating performance depends on the enclosure as well as the equipment. Insulation, air leakage, doors, windows, and exhaust ventilation all affect how much heat a shop needs and where it escapes. The U.S. Department of Energy’s weatherization guidance considers the building shell and heating system together, and includes air sealing, insulation, combustion-appliance safety testing, vent-system repairs, and mechanical ventilation where relevant. It is a general building framework, not a shop-specific engineering prescription.
Before selecting equipment, note how the shop is used. A space occupied all day, a workshop with frequently opened overhead doors, and a building heated only for occasional jobs may call for different distribution or zoning strategies. Heating only the occupied work area can also be worth considering if the whole building does not need to be warm at all times.
Compare the main whole-shop heating approaches
| System | How it delivers heat | What to evaluate in a shop |
|---|---|---|
| Vented gas unit heater | Burns gas and uses a fan to distribute warmed air. | Confirm gas service, capacity at local winter conditions, a feasible vent route, combustion-air needs, clearances, and installation requirements. Natural Resources Canada notes that some models are marketed for residential garage use; its regulatory guidance applies in Canada. |
| Fuel-fired radiant or infrared heater | Directs radiant heat toward people or objects rather than first heating the surrounding air. | Placement matters: the heated work area or objects need to be within the heater’s intended line of coverage. Check fuel supply, venting and combustion requirements, clearances, and manufacturer instructions. |
| Heat pump | Uses electricity to transfer heat rather than generating it directly; options include air-source and ductless systems. | Assess climate, the shop’s heat load and layout, outdoor-unit location, electrical capacity, and how heat will be distributed. The DOE’s heat-pump guidance is general consumer information, not a shop-specific design. |
| Electric-resistance heat | Uses electricity to provide direct heat. | Check electrical capacity and local electricity rates. Operating cost depends on the shop’s actual heat demand, rate, and operating schedule; the available DOE direct-heating guidance does not establish a shop-cost comparison. |
These systems cannot be ranked on equipment type alone. Compare heat coverage, capacity at local design conditions, service upgrades, distribution and comfort, ventilation or venting, installation and maintenance, and operating cost using the shop’s actual rates and the equipment’s performance. The UK government’s Energy Technology List describes radiant heating applications including workshops and other large spaces, but its savings statement is conditional: for buildings subject to high ventilation rates, ETL-listed radiant heating could reduce heating costs by up to 20% compared with conventional air heating systems. That figure is not a general savings promise for every shop or market.

Gather the information needed to size the system
Ask a qualified HVAC designer or installer to calculate the heating load and explain the assumptions. The DOE’s equipment-sizing workshop material identifies space dimensions, enclosure airtightness and insulation, climate, and other factors as sizing inputs. It concerns residential heat pumps, so it should not be treated as a shop-specific sizing standard.
Collect these details before requesting proposals:
- Shop length, width, ceiling height, and the indoor temperature you want to maintain.
- Operating hours and schedule, including whether the shop is heated continuously or intermittently.
- Local winter design conditions and the equipment capacity needed under those conditions.
- Insulation levels, air leakage, door and window sizes, and how often large doors are opened.
- Exhaust ventilation and any adjacent conditioned spaces.
- Available gas service, electrical capacity, and whether upgrades may be needed.
- Potential heater locations, distribution constraints, and space for any outdoor equipment or venting.
A generic rule based only on floor area cannot account for all these conditions. A load calculation makes the proposal’s assumptions visible and gives you a more meaningful basis for comparing systems.

Include envelope work in the heating decision
Air sealing and insulation can change the heating load, so consider them alongside equipment selection rather than as unrelated improvements. The DOE’s weatherization framework also highlights combustion safety, safe venting, and ventilation. Those principles are useful context for a shop assessment, but a professional must determine which measures and designs apply to the specific building.
Plan for combustion safety, venting, and installation
Fuel-burning heaters require a safe way to handle combustion products and may require combustion air or additional ventilation. Before installation, verify the appliance’s venting method, required clearances from combustible materials, approved orientation and location, and manufacturer instructions. Applicable permits and adopted codes depend on the shop’s jurisdiction and the installation.

The DOE’s weatherization guidance includes testing combustion appliances and ensuring vent systems draft combustion gases safely outside; it also identifies ventilation and carbon-monoxide alarms as considerations where needed. These are building-safety concerns, not a substitute for appliance instructions or local code review.
OSHA’s temporary-heater rule addresses devices used in covered construction settings. It includes ventilation provisions when natural fresh-air supply is inadequate, requirements for sufficient ventilation in confined spaces, combustible clearances based on heater type, and conditions for keeping heaters level. Its specific requirements should not be assumed to govern every permanent shop heating system; confirm which rules apply to the work and location.

Request proposals that state the calculated load, design assumptions, selected capacity, distribution approach, and any planned service upgrades. For combustion equipment, ask how venting, combustion air, clearances, and ventilation will be handled. For any system, clarify installation constraints, expected maintenance, and how the equipment’s performance relates to local energy rates and the shop’s operating schedule.
