If your Whirlpool WHES33 is not softening water, first check power, salt, bypass position, and the clock and hardness settings before considering a repair. For the correct instructions, match the model on the unit’s rating decal and use the official Whirlpool owner-center manual listing; WHES30 and WHES33 instructions are not interchangeable by assumption.
Start with the checks that solve most no-soft-water problems
- Check the display and power. If the display is blank, check that the outlet has power and the unit is plugged in. Check the fuse or breaker, and whether the circuit is controlled by a switch. After a power interruption, reset the controls and run a recharge as directed in the manual. A continuing control-board problem needs service.
- Check the salt level. If the tank is empty, add water-softener salt and use RECHARGE NOW. The salt monitor may need to be set after you refill the tank.
- Confirm the bypass is in service. A softener left in bypass sends untreated water to the house.
- Check for a salt bridge. A hard crust can form above the water, leaving an air gap so the salt cannot make brine even though the tank looks full. Gently probe straight down with a broom handle or another blunt tool. Do not use a sharp or pointed tool, and do not strike the tank.
- Verify the settings. Check the clock, water-hardness setting, and model code. Use a test of untreated water for hardness and iron where possible rather than guessing from the hardness of water coming out of the tap.
WHES33 salt level not dropping or brine tank looks full
A salt bridge is one possible reason salt is not being used. If water is flowing to the drain while the softener is in its normal service cycle, the problem may instead involve the nozzle/venturi, an internal valve leak, the drain, or the brine float or tubing.
- Check that the drain hose is not plugged, kinked, or arranged in a way that restricts flow. The manual cautions against runs longer than 30 feet or elevation more than 8 feet above the floor, particularly when water pressure is low.
- Check that the valve drain and brine overflow drain are not joined through a tee.
- A dirty or damaged nozzle/venturi, dirty or broken brine float, unsuitable pressure, or a leak between the valve and resin tank may require diagnosis beyond a visual check.
Do not open or disassemble a pressurized valve to investigate. Have a qualified water-treatment or plumbing technician handle suspected internal leaks, pressure problems, and valve repairs.
How to check whether the WHES33 is drawing brine
Whirlpool’s manual describes a manual-advance diagnostic. Follow the procedure in the manual that matches your unit, and do not disassemble the valve. Before starting, ensure the display shows a steady time and salt and water are in contact, not separated by a bridge.

- Hold RECHARGE for three seconds to advance to the fill stage. Observe whether water enters as described in the manual.
- Advance to the brine stage using the manual’s instructions, then watch the liquid level in the brinewell. A noticeable drop may take 15 to 20 minutes.
- If the level does not drop, the manual points first to a clogged or poorly seated nozzle/venturi or gasket. Other possible causes include leaking valve seals, drain restriction or backpressure, and an obstruction in the brine valve or tubing.
Hard water returns only sometimes
Intermittent hardness can result from settings, household demand, or a change in the incoming water—not only a failed part. Check these possibilities:
- The clock may be wrong, or the hardness or model-code setting may not match the unit and water supply.
- Hot water used during regeneration may be untreated while the softener is completing its cycle.
- Untreated source-water hardness or iron may have changed; test the incoming water if you can.
- A leaking faucet or toilet, or unusually high water use, can consume the softener’s available capacity sooner.
What WHES33 display messages and error codes mean

| Rapidly flashing light with Err | The control’s self-diagnostics indicate a problem. The troubleshooting manual associates Err1, Err3, and Err4 with a wiring-harness or position-switch connection fault. |
The manual’s reset procedure involves unplugging the unit, correcting the problem, and reconnecting power; if the fault remains, the code returns after eight minutes. Because identifying an internal wiring or switch fault can require service, give the exact code and model and serial number to Whirlpool support or a qualified technician rather than replacing wiring yourself.

Clicking or a stalled motor
The manual attributes a stalled or clicking motor to motor malfunction or an internal valve fault that creates high torque. Its listed repairs include work on the rotor/seal or motor/switch. Treat persistent clicking as a service-level fault, not a reason to keep resetting the unit.

Contact Whirlpool Water Solutions or a qualified water-treatment/plumbing technician for a persistent Err code, motor clicking, water continuing to drain during service mode, suspected internal valve leaks, or uncertain pressure and flow conditions. Have the model and serial number ready. The rating decal is typically on the rim below the salt-lid hinges. The reviewed manual lists 1-866-986-3223, but verify current contact details and hours on Whirlpool’s official support page before calling.

Whirlpool lists the WHES33 with a 33,000-grain maximum capacity, 8.0 gpm rated service flow, 20–125 psi pressure limits, and 200 lb salt-storage capacity. These are manufacturer specifications, not confirmation that a particular installation is operating within those limits. If a part is ultimately needed, match its part number to the WHES33 rating information and the applicable manual before ordering; do not assume a part listed for a neighboring model fits.
Whirlpool’s warranty page lists the WHES33 in a five-year water-softener warranty section and conditions the extension on registration and cleanser use as recommended. Review the current Whirlpool Water Solutions warranty terms for applicable conditions; the listing does not establish coverage for a particular repair.
