Neither Hunter nor Rain Bird is a defensible brand-wide winner: the better gear-driven sprinkler is the exact model that fits your system’s pressure and flow, watering area, nozzle and arc needs, and installation dimensions. For a replacement, matching the existing model and zone may matter more than switching brands.
What to compare before choosing a rotor
Start with the sprinkler’s operating conditions and the area it must cover. A rotor without adequate pressure and flow may not pop up or reach its intended distance. Hunter’s residential rotor support resources include performance cards, product identification, installation, nozzle, and troubleshooting information.
- Pressure and flow: Check what the zone can supply at the head, then compare it with the exact model’s performance information.
- Throw and coverage: Choose a model and nozzle that can serve the intended area under those conditions. For a new system, plan head-to-head coverage and matched precipitation instead of choosing by brand reputation.
- Arc and nozzle options: Make sure the adjustment range and available nozzles suit the shape of the lawn or planting area.
- Physical fit: Verify inlet, pop-up, and installation dimensions, especially when replacing a head.
- Compatibility and support: Check that the model works with the zone and that instructions and replacement parts are available for that exact sprinkler.
What the published product information says
Rain Bird’s rotor product page lists an adjustable 40°–360° pattern and a 25–50 ft spray distance for its rotor range. These are manufacturer-published figures, not independent comparative test results; confirm the specifications and operating conditions for the particular model you are considering.
Rain Bird describes its rotor gear-drive heads as having a closed-case design intended to protect against intrusive grasses and support longer watering life. That is Rain Bird’s product-page statement, not independently validated evidence that its rotors outlast competing models.

Hunter explains that water turns a small turbine in the sprinkler base, which drives gears and rotates the nozzle turret. Its rotor FAQ also notes that contamination can enter the mechanism over time; it advises cleaning the filter if flow decreases and rotation stops.

If you are replacing one sprinkler
- Identify the installed sprinkler and its nozzle if possible; do not assume a different brand’s rotor will fit or perform the same way.
- Check the replacement’s inlet and installation dimensions, nozzle, arc, and operating requirements against the existing zone.
- Use the model’s own installation and adjustment instructions. Hunter publishes a PGP-ADJ replacement guide with nozzle correspondences for specific Rain Bird models, including 5000 and 5505. Follow the exact model row; the chart does not establish universal cross-brand compatibility.
- After installation, confirm that the head pops up, rotates through its intended arc, and reaches the area it is meant to water.
