What the manufacturers publish is enough to choose well for a particular cook: how fast the briquettes are ready, how long they are claimed to burn, what they are made from, and whether the product is sold where you live. Kingsford Original, Weber Briquettes and Royal Oak Classic Premium are the three mainstream briquettes to compare, with Royal Oak All Natural as an ingredient-focused alternative.
Why there is no universal winner
Every figure in this comparison comes from the maker’s own product page or guidance. None of the cited pages describes an independent or standardised test, and none of them uses a shared method. A “ready in 15 minutes” claim from one brand and a “three-hour burn” claim from another therefore cannot be ranked against each other as measured results. Read them as each company’s description of its own product.
Product availability and formulation can also differ by country. The Weber figures below come from its UK product page, and the Kingsford and Royal Oak pages do not state which market they apply to in the same way, so check the label on the bag you actually buy.
Choose by cook length, heat and ingredients
Start with the cook rather than the brand. Weber’s own fuel guidance favours briquettes for longer cooks, where a longer and more even heat source is useful, and describes lump charcoal as capable of more intense heat. That is Weber’s guidance, not a universal finding, but it gives a sensible starting point.

- A short weeknight or burger cook: the products that each claim readiness in about 15 minutes (Kingsford Original and Royal Oak Classic Premium) match a quick start.
- A long, slow cook or smoking session: the Weber Briquettes page claims a three-hour burn, the longest duration stated on any of these pages. Weber’s guidance also favours briquettes over lump for longer cooks.
- A preference for natural ingredients: Kingsford describes its Original Charcoal as made with 100% natural ingredients. Royal Oak All Natural describes hardwoods and vegetable starch.
- Local availability: check what your nearest retailer stocks before deciding, because the products are not sold identically everywhere.

Kingsford Original Charcoal Briquets
Kingsford presents Original Charcoal as a versatile grilling fuel that is ready in about 15 minutes and suitable for grilling and smoking. Its “lights faster” and “burns hotter” wording is a comparison with conventional charcoal sold nationally in the United States, as stated by Kingsford. It is not an independently verified comparison with other brands. The Kingsford Original Charcoal Briquets product page carries these statements.
Rank #2
- 100% premium hardwood
- Naturally sourced and fired in artisan style kilns
- Ideal for Gravity Series grills and other charcoal cooking products
- Perfect hardwood blend for all temperature ranges and food types
- Clean burn for optimal charcoal flavor and performance
Kingsford’s FAQ gives a rule of thumb for fuel quantity: plan about 4 lb of charcoal per grilling session on a standard kettle grill, as set out on the Kingsford FAQ page. This is Kingsford’s own estimate, not a universal measurement, and it will shift with grill size, airflow, weather and how much food you cook.
Weber Briquettes
The Weber UK page for its 8 kg bag describes the briquettes as made from carbonised wood, starch and water, and says they are made from responsibly sourced wood with certifications listed on the product page. Weber lists them as ready to use in 20 minutes and claims a three-hour burn. These are statements about the UK offering. The Weber UK briquettes page sets out the details.

Weber’s charcoal fuel types guidance is the broader reference for choosing between briquettes and lump charcoal.
Royal Oak Classic Premium and All Natural
Royal Oak describes its Classic Premium Hardwood Charcoal Briquets as suitable for grilling and smoking, ready in about 15 minutes. Its wording about long and hot burning and consistent results is the company’s own claim, and the page does not give a burn duration.
Rank #4

Weber’s instructional PDF recommends a chimney starter and lighter cubes as ignition aids. A chimney starter is an optional accessory, not a requirement, and lighter cubes are one of several ways to start a fire. Whatever you use, follow the same sequence:

- Long-Lasting Burn Time: Provides over 4 hours of open-air burn or over 20 hours in low-oxygen cooking environments, using 25–40% less wood for slow-cooking sessions. Ideal for family barbecue parties, tailgate cookout sessions, and more.
- High Heat with Low Ash Output: Capable of reaching temperatures above 1,100 degrees, this charcoal produces minimal ash, reducing waste and cleanup while supporting efficient grilling.
- Set up the grill outdoors and follow the owner’s manual for that specific grill.
- Light the briquettes with a chimney starter or lighter cubes, or another method the manual allows.
- Never use spirit, petrol or comparable fluids to light or re-light the fire. Weber’s warning reads: “WARNING! Do not use spirit, petrol or comparable fluids for lighting or re-lighting!”
- Wait until the briquettes have an ash coating before placing food on the grate.
- Cook, keeping in mind that readiness times are each manufacturer’s own claim.
Safety around charcoal
- Use charcoal grills outdoors only. Weber warns against use in confined spaces because of the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.
- Keep fuel away from heat-producing appliances and from other fuel containers.
- Use heat-resistant gloves when handling the grill.
- Keep charcoal lighting smoke away from anyone who may be sensitive to it.
What these sources do and do not establish
The comparison above rests on manufacturer product pages, a Kingsford FAQ, and Weber’s fuel guidance and instructional material. None of them reports an independent performance test, a third-party comparison, emissions data, or seasonal pricing, so this article makes no claim about which briquette burns longest or hottest in your grill. To test a shortlist yourself, cook the same food on two brands at the same grill setting and time the ash coating and the end of the burn.
Kingsford’s readiness and fuel-quantity figures are ballpark numbers, Weber’s three-hour claim applies to its UK product, and Royal Oak’s wording on heat and consistency is descriptive rather than measured.
Read these claims as the starting point for a choice, not as proof of one.
