The Tandem is a combined hand-washing sink and urinal designed by Kaspars Jursons: water from the sink drains into the urinal below, so the same water can serve both uses. It is now listed by its manufacturer, STAND, as the urinal-sink combo. STAND claims the fixture can save up to 50% of water compared with a conventional separate sink and urinal, but that figure is a conditional manufacturer claim, not an independently verified result.
What is the Tandem sink/urinal combo?
The Tandem integrates a basin and urinal into one wall-mounted fixture. A user washes their hands in the basin above; that water then flows into the urinal below. The design’s central idea is to reuse water that would otherwise go directly from the sink to the drain.
The fixture was designed by Latvian designer Kaspars Jursons. New Atlas reported on the Tandem in 2013, when it was described as a small-scale-manufactured product and priced at US$590. Those details are historical, not a statement of today’s price or production arrangements. New Atlas’s 2013 report covers the original design and its launch-era context.
How does the water reuse work?
The basin sits directly above the urinal, allowing hand-washing water to flow into the fixture below. STAND says the combo can save up to 50% of water compared with a regular urinal and sink when fitted with an appropriate faucet. That is the manufacturer’s stated maximum, not a guaranteed saving for every installation; the available sources do not provide an independent test validating the percentage.

- Water-saving circulation: Wastewater from handwashing after using the toilet automatically flows into the urinal to rinse away stains, eliminatingthe need for additional flushing and enabling the reuse of wastewater, effectively conserving water resources.
- Flexible faucet: Equipped with an adjustable, retractable faucet for convenient cleaning operations; also offers two water flow modes—strong and gentle—to meet different cleaning needs.
- Powerful Flushing, Eliminates Odors: Features a waterfall-style vertical flushing design with strong flushing power and wide coverage, thoroughly removing residual stains and avoiding odors after use, maintaining cleanliness.
- Space-Saving Design: Wall-mounted installation saves floor space, with an integrated sink on top, eliminatingthe need for additional installations, easily saving bathroom space, especially suitable for small apartments.
- Durableand easy to clean: Made from high-temperature fired ceramic material with a smooth and delicate glaze surface, it is easy to clean daily. The material is sturdy and resistant to cracking, ensuring long-lasting durability and a like-new appearance.
Jursons described the functional goal to KCUR: “It’s not just a fancy piece of art,” he says. “The idea is about function and consumption. You are washing your hands in the sink on top of the urinal, and the same water that’s running is also used to flush. You don’t have to use water twice, like when you use the urinal and wash your hands in separate sink.” KCUR’s interview with the designer explains the concept.

A combined fixture changes more than the visual layout. Before specifying it, compare it with separate sink-and-urinal fixtures against the project conditions that determine whether water reuse and installation are practical:
