When Should You Plant Sunflowers? A Frost-and-Soil Guide

Sow annual sunflower seeds outdoors after local frost danger has passed and the soil has warmed. Regional calendars, soil-temperature recommendations and variety maturity all affect the best date.

For most gardeners growing annual sunflowers, sow seeds outdoors after the local last spring frost, once the soil has warmed. The right date depends on your location, the weather and the variety—not a single planting month that works everywhere.

Use frost and soil conditions to choose your planting date

Common garden sunflowers (Helianthus annuus) are warm-season annuals and are not frost-tolerant. North Carolina State Extension advises sowing them after the last spring frost. Check your local frost timing, then make sure the soil has warmed before planting.

Extension recommendations give different soil-temperature thresholds: Oregon State University Extension says at least 50°F, Utah State University Extension says at least 45°F, and University of Georgia Cooperative Extension says 60°F is ideal. These are source-specific recommendations, not one universal cutoff. If you use a thermometer, take its reading as one helpful cue alongside frost risk and local guidance.

Why planting months vary by region

A calendar date from another region can be misleading because frost dates and spring warming differ. The regional examples below illustrate the variation; they are not a nationwide schedule.

Region and source Timing guidance
Oregon — Oregon State University Extension April to June in the Willamette Valley and on the coast; June in Central and Eastern Oregon. Direct-sow after the last frost when soil is at least 50°F.
Georgia — University of Georgia Cooperative Extension Examples range from March in south Georgia to early May in north Georgia. Plant several weeks after the last frost; 60°F soil is ideal.
United Kingdom — Royal Horticultural Society Move annual seedlings outdoors in late spring or early summer when soil is warming and frost risk has passed, after hardening them off. This is UK guidance, not a U.S. calendar.

Use your local extension service or gardening authority for your area, and follow the seed packet for the selected variety.

Direct-sow outdoors or start seeds indoors?

Direct sowing

For most home gardens, sowing directly outdoors after frost danger has passed is the straightforward approach. It avoids transplanting and the risk of disturbing sunflower roots.

Indoor starts

You can start seeds indoors, but avoid starting them too early: sunflowers grow quickly and may become rootbound. Oregon State University Extension says indoor starts can be transplanted from May or June, depending on location. Harden seedlings off before planting them outdoors, and wait until freezing danger has passed. The Royal Horticultural Society likewise recommends hardening off seedlings before moving them outside.

How to keep flowers coming through the season

Succession sowing—planting another batch at intervals—can extend flowering or harvests. The interval and final sowing date depend on the cultivar, its time to maturity and your expected first fall frost.

  • University of Georgia Cooperative Extension recommends planting every couple of weeks for continuous blooms.
  • Utah State University Extension recommends sowing single-stem cultivars every 1 to 3 weeks; branching types typically need fewer sowings, around every 2 to 3 weeks. For single-stem crops in northern Utah, its successful schedule begins 7 to 14 days before the last frost and ends 7 to 14 weeks before the predicted first hard frost. This is Utah production guidance, not a universal home-garden prescription.
  • Mississippi State Extension describes weekly sowings for successive blooms and stopping new transplants around 60 days before the first frost in its example. Treat that cutoff as local advice, not a guarantee for other regions or varieties.

Before a late sowing, compare the variety’s days to maturity with the time remaining before your area’s expected frost. Local schedules differ, so there is no evidence-based single final planting date for every garden.

Annual garden sunflowers are not all Helianthus

The timing guidance here concerns common annual sunflowers grown from seed. Other Helianthus species may be perennial, so do not assume that advice for annual sunflower planting dates applies to every plant called a sunflower.
