It is a wood species plus a cutting method, and the abbreviation shows up most often in cut lists, cabinet plans and retailer finish menus.
What the letters stand for
QSWO is shorthand for quartersawn white oak. The clearest written example comes from a Popular Woodworking cabinet plan, Stickley’s No. 70 Music Cabinet: Parts and Dimensions, published in April 2007. Its stock table defines “qswo” as quartersawn white oak and lists it as the material for cabinet components. A Valley Woodworkers newsletter from April 2007 uses the same abbreviation in a similar project stock table.
Two parts of the phrase carry the meaning:
- White oak is the species. It is a common hardwood in North American furniture and cabinetry.
- Quartersawn is the cut. It describes how the log was milled, not a finish, grade or color.
What “quartersawn” means
The Amish Home, a furniture retailer, describes the process this way: “Quartersawn describes a way of cutting oak logs into quarters to create distinctive grain patterns, including figure flakes, fine lines, pin stripes, leafy grains and watery figures.” That description is retailer marketing, but it names the visual results buyers are looking for.
In practice, the cut changes the face of each board. Boards from a quartersawn log show a striped or flecked figure, and the retailer ties this look to Mission-style furniture and antiques. The same wood cut another way (flatsawn, or plain-sawn) typically shows a broader, cathedral-like grain. If you are choosing between the two, look at the face of the board rather than the label alone.

Where you will see QSWO
QSWO appears in two kinds of documents, and each uses it differently.
Project plans and cut lists
In a plan, QSWO is a material code. The 2007 Stickley-style cabinet plan lists it in the stock table for the cabinet parts. When you see it in a cut list, read it as “order quartersawn white oak stock for these pieces.” The dimensions in that plan belong to that one project; they are not general sizing rules for the wood.
Rank #2
Finished furniture listings
Retailers use QSWO as a finish or wood option. A 2026 Simply Amish catalog, shown through Glen Rose Designs, lists Character Quartersawn White Oak as an option. That catalog states the option is available only on its San Miguel Collection and San Miguel Express items. Other retailers may offer different species, stains or collection rules, so the option is specific to the seller’s catalog and date.
The Amish Home lists several QSWO finishes, including Natural, Provincial and Onyx. Treat these as one retailer’s menu, not a standard set of finishes for quartersawn white oak.
Rank #3
- You are buying 4 White Oak Boards
- Each board measures 3/4" thick, 2" wide, and 12" long
- Kiln dry, smooth on both sides, and ready to have fun with
- These are perfect for making crafts like cutting boards
Check the abbreviation before you order
QSWO is not a universal abbreviation. In woodworking and furniture contexts, the meaning above is well supported. A search for the same letters can also surface unrelated technical documents; a Kansas Geological Survey hydrology report appeared in the search results for this acronym, but nothing in that excerpt establishes the same meaning. If the document is not about wood, do not assume quartersawn white oak.
When a supplier, drawing or plan uses QSWO without defining it, confirm the species and cut in writing before you cut or buy. A short checklist helps:
Rank #4
- Confirm the species is white oak, not red oak. Ask for the species name in full on the quote or order.
- Confirm the cut is quartersawn, not plain-sawn or rift-sawn, and ask to see sample boards if the grain pattern matters to the design.
- For a finished piece, confirm the stain or finish name, the collection, and whether that option is still offered on the date you order.
- For lumber, check that the stock dimensions in the cut list match what your supplier actually sells.
What the sources do not establish
The available sources explain what QSWO means and how the cut looks. They do not provide a price, durability or performance comparison between quartersawn white oak and other oaks or hardwoods, and they do not give a general figure for how much stock yield or waste to expect. If you need those numbers for a bid or a load-bearing design, get them from your lumber supplier or a current grading reference.
