Choose an inverter for the exact cooktop model, not for induction cooktops in general. Match its required AC voltage and frequency, then make sure the inverter’s continuous output meets or exceeds the cooktop’s maximum electrical input. For some 2,000 W portable models, manufacturers specify a pure sine wave inverter rated at least 2,000 W for full output. Built-in cooktops and ranges can have very different voltage and circuit requirements.
Start with the cooktop’s electrical requirements
Find the appliance’s model number and check its nameplate and installation manual. Look for the maximum input power or connected load, supply voltage, frequency, and any stated circuit requirement. Use maximum electrical input—not an assumed everyday setting—as the basis for choosing an inverter.
Induction element ratings and boost settings vary by model. Wolf’s published element examples range from 1,200 W to 4,000 W, so a single burner rating or a generic estimate cannot establish the requirement for another appliance. Wolf’s element wattage information is specific to the listed cooktop families.
Match the inverter’s AC output
Voltage and frequency
The inverter must provide the voltage and frequency the cooktop is designed to use. Portable units may be made for a particular regional supply, while built-in North American models may specify 208 or 240 V. Do not assume a 120 V inverter can operate a cooktop requiring 208–240 V, or that a cooktop made for one region will work on another region’s supply.

For example, Hestan lists its US Cue-enabled portable burner as 110 V, 60 Hz, with up to 1,600 W draw, and warns that the US model will not work with 220–240 V, 50 Hz current. Its page lists different requirements for other regional models. Check the exact version rather than relying on the brand name alone. Hestan’s product information distinguishes these versions.
Continuous output and waveform
Compare the cooktop’s maximum input with the inverter’s continuous AC output rating. A surge or peak rating is not a substitute for enough continuous output. Some portable cooktop manufacturers also specify a pure sine wave inverter; follow the appliance’s own manual rather than treating that specification as universal.

- PORTABLE INDUCTION BURNER: Duxtop induction cooktop uses 110/120 V 15 amp electrical outlet–standard in all North American homes. ETL listed and built to North American electrical standards. It is lightweight and compact for easy handling and storage
- Choose from 20 preset power levels (100 to 1800 W) and 20 preset temperature level settings (100 °F to 460 °F). With an 83% energy efficiency, induction burner is more efficient than traditional gas or electric stoves
- DIGITAL LCD SENSOR: Touch control panel: child safety lock keeps the cooking and timer settings from being accidentally changed once they have been set; fast boil button; keep warm button (for 1-30 minutes at 140 °F); up to 10-hour timer button
- Induction stoves rely on cookware to heat, so it’s essential to choose magnetic bottom cookware with a minimum diameter of 5 inches. Auto-pan detection will shut off automatically after 60 seconds if no cookware, or the incorrect cookware is detected
- Although induction itself is a noiseless process, there may be high pitched sounds from the cookware due to multiple layers of metals sandwiched together. Please allow the induction cooker to cool down before cleaning
For instance, KickAss says its 2,000 W portable cooktop needs a 2,000 W or larger pure sine wave inverter for maximum performance. It also says that this exact cooktop can be used with a 1,000 W pure sine wave inverter if the setting is kept at or below Level 4 (800 W). That lower-output guidance is model-specific, not a general rule for other cooktops. KickAss support FAQs provide the product guidance.
Sterling’s IHS1 single hob is rated up to 2,000 W, with settings from 800 W to 2,000 W. Sterling specifies a minimum 2,000 W pure sine wave inverter for maximum power and 1,000 W for lower settings. Sterling’s IHS1 specifications apply to that model.

Portable cooktops and built-in appliances have different needs
A portable cooktop’s inverter guidance does not establish what is suitable for a built-in cooktop or range. Built-in appliances may require a higher-voltage supply and a dedicated circuit; their installation requirements must be assessed as an electrical system, not inferred from a portable unit’s wattage.
| Named appliance | Published electrical requirement | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Wolf induction range | Grounded, 240 VAC, 60 Hz, 50 A dedicated circuit. Wolf says 208 V reduces cooktop wattage and oven preheat performance and recommends 240 V. | Wolf / Sub-Zero, Wolf, and Cove FAQ |
| Fisher & Paykel four-zone cooktop | 208 or 240 V; 35 A service in the US or 40 A in Canada. Listed zone boost output reaches 3,000 W. | Fisher & Paykel product specifications |
| Frigidaire FFIC3026TB | 240 V, 7.2 kW connected load, 30 A minimum circuit. | Frigidaire Canada product support |
These are specifications for the named products, not universal requirements. Follow the exact installation instructions and applicable local electrical requirements for the appliance being installed.

Account for the battery and DC side
An inverter converts battery-side DC into the cooktop’s AC supply, and a high AC load can require substantial DC current. The appropriate battery capacity, cable, fuse, and system design depend on the inverter’s DC voltage and the installation. The cooktop’s wattage alone does not determine these items, and the examples above do not establish universal sizing values.
Quick Recap
- Use the inverter manufacturer’s documentation for DC input, protection, and installation requirements.
- Do not size cables, fuses, or a battery bank from the inverter’s watt rating alone.
- For hardwired or high-current equipment, have the installation assessed by a qualified electrical professional.
Practical selection checklist
- Identify the exact cooktop model and region; check its nameplate and installation manual.
- Record the maximum input or connected load, required AC voltage and frequency, and any circuit specification.
- Select an inverter whose output voltage and frequency match the cooktop and whose continuous output meets the maximum load.
- Use the waveform type required by that cooktop’s manufacturer; do not assume a specification from another model applies.
- Confirm the complete DC-side design and installation requirements with the inverter documentation and, where required, a qualified installer.
