A transfer water pump moves water from one place to another—for example, from a tank to a storage point or out of a flooded area. It is designed for moving water, not necessarily for increasing pressure at taps. The right pump depends on the water, the distance and height it must travel, and how the pump will be powered and installed.
What does a transfer water pump do?
“Transfer pump” describes a job rather than one specific pump design: moving liquid from a source to a destination. Water-transfer jobs include filling a storage tank, draining standing water, or supplying water to an irrigation point. Pumps differ in their flow capacity, lift, installation, and the water conditions they can handle, so the name alone does not establish that a particular model is suitable. ePumps explains transfer-pump types and selection factors; Grundfos discusses transfer pumps for tank filling.
When might you need one?
A portable utility pump can be useful for temporary water-moving jobs around a property. Pentair lists emergency water transfer and dewatering, lawn irrigation, moving water to animals, and draining pools, ponds, or hot tubs among utility-pump applications. Whether a specific pump can handle a particular job depends on its specifications and the manufacturer’s instructions. Pentair’s Utility Pump Information Guide describes these uses.
Transfer pump or booster pump: which problem are you solving?
A transfer pump moves water between locations. A booster pump is intended to address pressure in an existing water system. If the problem is low pressure at a tap, a basic utility pump may not be the right solution; pressure, height, and the plumbing installation all matter when selecting equipment. How to choose a pump for the job
- Check the water. Determine whether it is clear or contains debris, then confirm that the pump is approved for those conditions. Do not assume a pump handles dirty water just because it is called a transfer pump. See Pentair’s Water Utility Pumps FAQ and its Utility Pump Information Guide.
- Estimate the flow you need. Consider how much water must be moved and how quickly. Pentair advises considering the size of the area being drained when choosing a flow rate; a higher flow rate can remove water faster. Check the model’s rated performance rather than relying on the category name.
- Measure the route. Check the vertical lift and the distance water must travel through the hose or pipe. Confirm that the pump can handle the required lift, and use its manufacturer performance information for the actual setup. Hose length and system conditions can affect results.
- Choose the placement and power arrangement. Some pumps sit in the water; others draw water through a suction hose. Check which arrangement the task requires and whether the available power source is suitable. Follow the model-specific setup instructions.
- Match hoses and fittings. Confirm that hose sizes and fittings are compatible with the pump’s inlet and outlet and appropriate for the intended use. Check the manufacturer’s specifications before buying accessories.
- Account for the installation environment. For an outdoor or tank installation, consider weather exposure and noise. If the pump needs to start and stop automatically, verify that the pump supports a compatible control arrangement. Grundfos notes that a tank setup may use a float valve or a pump with a compatible external input and float switch; suitability depends on the installation.
Use and installation considerations
Temporary water transfer still requires attention while the pump is operating. Monitor the job and follow the specific pump’s instructions for placement, operation, and shutdown. A pump selected for one water condition or installation should not be assumed safe or effective in another. For a tank installation, verify that any float control or automatic input is compatible with the pump and the way the system is designed.
