Galvanized steel is iron or steel coated with zinc or a zinc-alloy layer that slows corrosion. The coating protects the steel by acting as a barrier and by sacrificing itself first when it is exposed, but it is not rust-proof and it does not come with a single fixed lifespan. In hot-dip galvanizing, the most common process for structural and fabricated steel, the steel reacts with molten zinc to form zinc-iron alloy layers that are bonded to the surface, usually topped by a pure zinc layer. Which coating is right depends on the product, the standard it is made to, and the environment it will face.

What the term “galvanized” covers

“Galvanized” describes a coating process, not one product. Any iron or steel item that carries a zinc or zinc-alloy metallic coating can be called galvanized, which is why a steel beam, a bolt, a roofing sheet and a fence panel can all be galvanized and still differ in how the coating was applied and how thick it is. The main distinctions readers run into are:

  • Hot-dip galvanized products, where a fabricated or unfabricated part is dipped into a bath of molten zinc.
  • Continuously galvanized sheet, where flat steel is coated as it runs through a specialized line.
  • Electrodeposited zinc-coated sheet, where zinc is applied by an electrical process rather than by immersion.

Because these routes produce different coatings, a specification written for one does not automatically apply to another. That is the single most common source of confusion when people compare galvanized products.

How hot-dip galvanizing forms the coating

The process works in a fixed sequence, and each stage affects the final coating. Steps are described as the American Galvanizers Association (AGA) outlines them in its design guide.

STEELWORKS BOLTMASTER 11228 Galvanized Sheet, 24 x 30"
  • This product is manufactured in china
  • Should not be welded
  • Galvanized metal sheet
  • Cold rolled
  1. Cleaning. The steel is cleaned to remove oil, scale and other surface contamination so the zinc can bond to bare iron.
  2. Heating in the zinc bath. The cleaned part is immersed in molten zinc. The AGA’s 2023 design guide gives the galvanizing temperature as approximately 830°F (443°C).
  3. Metallurgical reaction. Iron at the steel surface reacts with the zinc to form zinc-iron alloy layers. The ASTM A153/A153M hardware standard describes this same reaction.
  4. Withdrawal and cooling. The part is lifted out, excess zinc drains off, and the coating solidifies with an outer layer of iron-free zinc.
  5. Inspection. The finished coating is checked against the applicable product specification.

In the AGA guide, the alloy layers make up 50–70% of total coating thickness for most hot-rolled steels, with the remainder being the iron-free outer zinc layer. Steel chemistry matters here. Trace silicon and phosphorus can change how thick the alloy layers grow, and some reactive steels form a coating that is mostly alloy. That type of coating can look matte gray or rougher than a bright zinc finish. AGA states that a difference in appearance does not by itself mean lower corrosion protection, so surface look alone is not a reliable quality check.

Galvanized steel is not one standard

The governing standard depends on the product. The table below summarizes the references that the AGA guide and the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) catalog identify, along with their status at the time of writing (October 2026). Editions change, so confirm the current revision before specifying anything.

Product type Governing reference Scope and status as reported
Fabricated and unfabricated iron or steel products (rolled, pressed or forged shapes, castings, plates, bars, strips and fabricated assemblies) ASTM A123/A123M-24 Covers hot-dip galvanized coatings. The ASTM catalog lists it as active, last updated July 17, 2024.
Hardware such as bolts and similar items handled to remove excess zinc ASTM A153/A153M Addresses coating thickness or mass, finish, defects, adherence and inspection. The catalog reviewed describes A153/A153M-16a and lists A153/A153M-23 as active, so check the current edition.
Continuously galvanized steel sheet SAE J1562_201504 for selection; A123 does not apply A123 explicitly excludes sheet galvanized on specialized or continuous lines. SAE J1562 was reaffirmed April 28, 2015.
Reinforcing steel A123 for fabricated reinforcing bar assemblies; other standards for separately galvanized bars A123 distinguishes fabricated assemblies from separately galvanized bars. Confirm the edition and application standard for the project.

A coating designation such as G90 or Z275 is also specific to the product standard that calls it out. Those labels are not a universal grade of galvanized steel, and a designation should only be chosen from the standard that governs your product.

Is galvanized steel rust-proof, and how long does it last?

Galvanized steel is protected against corrosion, but it is not rust-proof. The zinc coating slows the attack on the steel underneath, and where the coating is scratched it still protects the exposed iron for a time because zinc corrodes in preference to steel. Both the thickness of the coating and the exposure determine how long that protection lasts, and the source material does not support a single service-life figure that applies to every product and environment. Any lifespan quoted without a named coating, product standard and exposure condition should be treated with caution.

The AGA design guide describes hot-dip galvanizing as “a proven corrosion protection system that transcends time” (American Galvanizers Association, Design Guide: Hot-Dip Galvanizing, 2023). That is promotional language from an industry body rather than an independently measured result, so treat it as the trade association’s view.

Choosing galvanized sheet

For sheet products, SAE International identifies five comparison points for zinc and zinc-alloy coated steel sheet (SAE J1562, 2015):

Rank #3
24 Gauge G90 Galvanized Sheet Metal – Rust-Resistant, Durable Steel Sheet for HVAC, Roofing, and DIY Projects (2, 12" x 8")
  • ✔ Heavy-Duty G90 Coating – Superior corrosion resistance with hot-dipped zinc protection for long-lasting performance.
  • ✔ Versatile Applications – Ideal for HVAC ductwork, roofing, siding, automotive repair, metal fabrication, and DIY projects.
  • ✔ Strong Yet Workable – 24-gauge thickness offers exceptional strength while being easy to cut, bend, weld, and drill.
  • ✔ Industrial-Grade Quality – Built to withstand harsh environments, from construction sites to home workshops.
  • ✔ Perfect for Indoor & Outdoor Use – Designed for weather resistance, making it great for fencing, patching, and structural reinforcement.
  • Corrosion protection that the coating must provide in the intended exposure.
  • Formability, meaning how the coated sheet bends and draws without damaging the coating.
  • Weldability, since the zinc layer affects how the sheet welds.
  • Surface characteristics, including the finish and appearance.
  • Paintability, if the sheet will be painted after installation.

Before ordering, confirm the sheet’s dimensions, thickness (gauge), coating designation and intended use with the supplier or the project specification. A general article cannot tell you which designation suits a given job.

Fabrication and design considerations

Hot-dip galvanizing is a bath process, so the design of the part controls whether it can be coated safely and completely. Hollow and enclosed assemblies need vent and drain openings so that air, cleaning solution and molten zinc can move through the part. The AGA guide warns that pickling solution or rinse water trapped inside a closed section can flash into superheated steam or gas on immersion, with pressure reaching 3,600 psi (25 MPa). That can damage the fabrication, injure people and destroy equipment.

Vent sizes and drainage details should come from the current standard and the galvanizer, not from general guidance.

Inspection and repair

Inspection follows the product specification. The AGA’s suggested specification calls for visual examination, plus thickness tests run under the applicable ASTM specification, and it references certificates of compliance from the galvanizer.

Coating damage happens during welding, flame cutting, handling, transport and erection. For those areas, the AGA guide points to ASTM A780, Repair of Damaged and Uncoated Areas of Hot-Dip Galvanized Coatings. Zinc-rich touch-up products are available, but a repair should follow the method and coating requirement set out in A780 and the project specification. A generic paint is not an acceptable substitute.

How to specify galvanized steel correctly

  1. Identify the product type: fabricated steel, hardware, continuous sheet, or reinforcing bar.
  2. Find the governing standard for that type and confirm its current edition.
  3. Specify the coating requirement (thickness, mass or designation) from that standard, not from a generic label.
  4. Check the design for venting and drainage if the part is hollow or enclosed.
  5. Agree on inspection and repair methods in the contract or project specification before fabrication begins.

Working through these steps in order gives a clearer result than comparing finishes by appearance or by the word “galvanized” alone.
